It was a few days after the princess ceremony had been held, welcoming Jily to her new role.
Leo：Jily, you know Robert, don't you?
Jily：Yes. He used to tutor me in town. He even taught me to paint.
Leo：Really? So does that mean you know some of Robert's secrets?
Jily：What? What secrets?
Leo：The maids here talk about Robert a lot, you see.
Leo：They say he's always smiling brightly, but he never talks about himself.
Leo：So they think he must be hiding some sort of secret.
Jily：When we lived down in town, I heard that he really likes pudding.
Jily：But I guess that's not a secret, is it?
Leo：That's... no, that's not really the sort of secret I'm talking about.
Leo：If you ask other people in the palace, maybe there's someone who knows.

（When we lived in town, I always looked up to him as my tutor.）

Giles：...cess? Princess? Are you listening?
Jily：Oh! I'm so sorry!
Giles：Is there something distracting you?
Jily：Well, I heard this rumor that the maids are talking about.
Jily：They say that Robert is keeping secrets.

〝Giles：Secrets? Now that you mention it...〞
〝Giles：I did have a certain conversation with him once.〞
〝Giles：Just how many paintings do you have in here?〞
〝Robert：That's a good question. The truth is, I'm not really sure.〞

Robert：It's not necessarily that I have too many of them...
Robert：but rather that I'm not very good at keeping them in order.

Sid：So you want to know all about Robert, huh?
Jily：It's not that exactly. I'm just a little curious.
Sid：Curiosity killed the cat, yaknow.
Sid：But okay, I guess there's something I can tell ya without chargin' ya for it.
Sid：It was a while ago, but...

〝Sid：Now here's something ya don't see every day.〞
〝Sid：Never expected you to come to a place like this.〞
〝Robert：I just needed a change of scenery. Why don't we drink together?〞
〝Sid：Sure.〞

〝Sid：You've had a heck of a lot to drink, but you don't look drunk at all.〞
〝Robert：That's because I'm no stranger to alcohol.〞

Sid：But that's about all I know.
Sid：Why don'tcha ask a certain someone who guards the palace every day?
Sid：Maybe he's seen something no one else has?

Alyn：You want to know about Robert?
Jily：Yes. I heard that he might be keeping secrets, and I'm a little curious.
Alyn：Hmph. But now that you mention it, I did see something a little while back.

〝Alyn：You look sleepy.〞
〝Robert：Oh, Sir Alyn!〞
〝Robert：I didn't mean for you to catch me at such an embarrassing moment.〞
〝Alyn：So you paint pictures outside first thing in the morning?〞
〝Robert：Yes. But I'm not really a morning person.〞
〝Robert：I'm so sleepy right now that my brushes aren't doing a thing.〞

Alyn：Well, that's not really a secret, but—
Alyn：Louis might know more.
Jily：Really?
Alyn：Sure. He commissions paintings from Robert all the time.

（Alyn said he might know something, but—is it really okay to just ask him?）

Jily：Excuse me...
Louis：Is this about Robert?
Jily：How did you know?!
Louis：I just heard about it from Alyn.
Louis：He said the princess seemed to be interested in Robert's secrets.
Jily：Well, yes. Do you know anything?
Louis：Just one thing.

〝Louis：Is this picture of... another country?〞
〝Robert：Yes. My, what was that sketch doing over here?〞
〝Robert：...Ahh, this really takes me back.〞

Louis：It was a country I didn't recognize at all.

Nico：Jily, you've been asking everyone about Robert lately, haven't you?
Nico：Have you found out anything interesting?
Jily：A little, I guess. Do you know anything, Nico?
Nico：Hmm. I've only just come to the palace recently myself,
Nico：so I don't really know anything.
Jily：I see.
Nico：Oh! The water in the teapot's gone cold.
Nico：I'll get some more hot water, okay?
Nico stepped out of the princess's room with the teapot in his hands, murmuring to himself.
Nico：My memories of Robert, huh?
A particular memory flitted through his mind.

〝Robert：Is this letter for me?〞
〝Nico：Yes! Albert told me that if I'm going to practice writing,〞
〝Nico：I should write letters to people.〞
〝Robert：I see. And this says... thank you?〞
〝Nico：That's right! I've gotten better, haven't I?〞
〝Robert：You have.〞
〝Nico：Robert, who taught you to write?〞
〝Robert：...My father, I suppose.〞

Nico：Ahhh, that takes me back. But I can't tell Jily about it!

（I've heard all sorts of stories...）
（but nobody really knows anything of substance.）

Jily：Robert, you really are a mystery.
Albert：The princess, wandering alone late at night—
Albert：have you no sense of how dangerous that could be?
Jily：Oh! Albert!
Albert：When conferences are being held here,
Albert：there are many unfamiliar people from other countries staying in the palace.
Albert：If your work is finished, you might be better off returning to your room.

（Your words sound harsh, but...）

Jily：I will. Thank you very much.
Albert stood silently, watching as Jily hurried off down the corridor.
He frowned to himself, remembering her mumbled words.
Albert：Robert—could she really have meant that Robert?
An old memory flashed through Albert's mind.

〝Albert：What is the name of the country in this sketch?〞
〝Robert：That's... a country that no longer exists.〞
〝Albert：So you're saying it was destroyed.〞
〝Albert：Will Stein be okay, I wonder?〞
〝Robert：I'm sure it will be, so long as you and Nico remain at Byron's side.〞

Albert：So does that mean he's now here, in this country?
Albert：I should inform His Majesty, just in case.

Byron：I see. So Robert is...
Albert：Yes. I don't know if he really is here in this country, but...
Byron fell silent, pressing his lips together thoughtfully.

〝An old memory flashed through his mind, one he'd almost forgotten.〞
〝Lord Wagner：Byron, this man is your new tutor.〞
〝Lord Wagner：I don't know where he learned it,〞
〝Lord Wagner：but he knows an awful lot about ruling a nation.〞
〝Robert：It's an honor to meet you, Prince Byron.〞
〝Byron surveyed the newcomer silently.〞
〝Lord Wagner：Study hard.〞
〝After Lord Wagner left the room, Robert turned to smile at Byron.〞
〝Robert：Prince Byron. Before we start studying, I would like to ask you one question.〞
〝Robert：What do you think is needed to make sure a country doesn't decline?〞
〝Byron：...Resources?〞
〝Robert：No. What is needed is for you to know how the common people live.〞

Byron：So he's still alive, hmm?
Byron muttered the words under his breath, a small smile crossing his face.

【12/04 10:00 am】

Robert：It's very late—have you been working all this time?
Jily：Oh, Robert!
Robert：You really are giving it your all, aren't you? Well done.
Jily：Thank you.

（I didn't really learn anything about you, Robert.）
（But I do remember that one thing Louis was curious about.）

Jily：Um—Robert, do you often visit other countries?
Robert：What?
Jily：Duke Howard was telling me a story.
Jily：He said he saw a sketch in your studio, of a country he'd never seen before.
Robert：It's not exactly that I visit other countries very often.
Robert：That was something I drew a long, long time ago.
Jily：I see.
Robert：This isn't really the place to stop and talk, though.
Robert：You should probably get back to your room and get some sleep.

（I thought asking you about other countries might be useful for the future as well, but...）

Jily：I will. Goodnight.
