Prologue:

It was early afternoon, and a gentle rain pattered against the windowpane.
Nico:Hmm? Did you make that dress yourself, Jily?
Jily:Yes, I did.
Nico picked up the dress I'd laid out on the bed, and gave me a bright smile.
Nico:It's beautiful.
Nico:You know, I think you'd look perfect in one of those pure white wedding dresses.
It was a custom at this time of year for women to spend time making dresses when it was raining outside.
But somehow because of this people kept talking about wedding dresses and ceremonies.
Jily:A wedding dress, hmm?
I found myself caught by Nico's words, and I turned my gaze thoughtfully to the window.
Jily:I wouldn't mind wearing one, you know.
Nico:Jily?
Nico's voice was soft in response to my thoughtful murmur, but then he fell silent again.

***

By the next morning the rain had stopped, and the sky was clear and blue.
As I was getting ready in my chamber, I heard a sudden knock at the door.
I quickly finished styling my hair and glanced towards the door.

(Oh, that must be him! Good thing I'm ready!)

Giles, Chapter 1:

I opened the door slowly to find Giles standing there.
I knew we had a busy day ahead, organizing relief efforts after the floods in the farmlands to the south.
Jily:Giles—
Giles smiled at me as I spoke his name, his serious expression relaxing.
Giles:Is something the matter?
Giles:It's time we got going, Princess. We have a lot to do today.
Jily:Okay.
I nodded, and Giles held the door open for me as I stepped into the corridor.
It was a long busy day of work, but by the time the sun was setting, most of the relief efforts were planned and underway.

***

That evening, in Giles's office—
Giles:The princess doesn't seem entirely herself lately. I don't suppose you know anything?
Nico:What's that?
Nico was visiting Giles's room, but he seemed surprised at the sudden question.
After a moment of thinking, he suddenly brightened.
Nico:Actually, I do. The other day Jily said she'd like to try wearing a wedding dress.
Giles:A wedding dress?
Nico:That's right. I guess it's something every girl dreams of, right?
At Nico's words, Giles slowly put the document he was holding down on the table.
Giles:Is that so?

***

At the same moment, I was lying in bed having a dream.
Jily:Nnnn—

=======

I lay sound asleep in my bed, having a dream.

--(Hmm—I think I've seen this place before.)

--It was a church I'd read about in the library once before, a place where your dreams of eternal love would be fulfilled.
--I was walking down a plush red carpet that had been laid out right down the middle of the church.

--(Someone's waiting for me at the altar.)

--I raised my head and saw a tall figure standing at the other end of the red carpet.

--(That's—)

Jily:Ahh!
I woke with a start, my eyes popping open, and I heard a familiar voice whisper in my ear.
Giles:Princess?

(Oh gosh.)

I raised my gaze to find Giles leaning over me, his expression serious.
Giles:Is something wrong?
Jily:I—

(Why is Giles here? I thought—)

I realized then that I was gripping Giles's hand so tightly my knuckles were turning white.
Jily:Oh! I'm sorry!
I let go of his hand with a start and sat up in bed.
Giles straightened up slowly and gazed down at me, his expression gentle.
Giles:I came to wake you this morning instead of Nico.
Jily:Thank you.

(I must've slept in—but we've got so much to do today! I hope I haven't wasted too much time.)

I pressed my lips together in frustration, and began to climb out of bed when Giles spoke again.
Giles:Did you have a bad dream?

=======

Giles:Did you have a bad dream?
Jily:I—
I stopped then, trying to remember what I'd been dreaming about a moment ago.

(I don't really remember it anymore, but—I think it was the exact opposite of bad.)

Jily:No, I'm fine.
I shook my head with a smile as I climbed out of bed.
I looked up at Giles and realized that he was gazing down at me, his eyes intense.

(Giles? Is something wrong?)

For a moment I felt as if he could see right into my soul, and I swallowed hard.
But then he shook his head and turned away without asking me anything more.

***

By midday we'd finished dealing with most of the paperwork related to the flooding, and we had time to take a quick break.
Jily:Say that again?
I peered up at Giles in disbelief where he stood in front of my desk.
Giles:I said, you can take tomorrow off, and the day after. Is there anything in particular you'd like to do?
Jily:A holiday?
I was startled by the sudden reprieve from work, but I couldn't hide my happiness at the idea of having some free time.

(It sure would be nice if Giles and I could go out somewhere together.)

I raised my gaze to meet his, imagining for a moment a peaceful day spent in town together.
He was silent, as if waiting patiently for me to speak.

(But just because I'm getting a holiday, that doesn't mean he is. I know how busy he is right now.
(I don't think it's fair of me to ask him that.)

I schooled my features into a careful smile for him.
Jily:Not really—I think I'll just relax here at the palace.
Giles narrowed his eyes a little at my words.
Giles:I see.
His tone of voice seemed odd somehow, but I couldn't be sure I wasn't imagining things.

(Giles? You seem—)

=======

Giles:I see.
Giles spoke softly, and then his gaze dropped to the documents in his hand.

(Giles? You seem—
(I don't know, but you seem different from usual.)

Giles:Is something the matter?
Jily:Oh—no, nothing.

(Or am I just imagining things?)

I shook my head quickly, and then stood up from the desk and made my way back to my chamber.

***

That evening, Nico visited Giles's room once again.
Nico:Is something wrong, Giles? You said you wanted to talk to me?
Giles gazed at Nico across the room, his expression unusually serious.
When he spoke, his voice was soft yet calm.
Giles:I have a favor to ask of you.

***

The next day was my day off, so I decided to sleep in.
As I was lounging in bed, slowly waking up, Nico suddenly appeared in my room.
Nico:Jily, time to get up!
Jily:Wait, what?
I sat up with a start at the sound of Nico's voice, blinking in confusion at him.

(But—why?)

I brushed my hair back out of my eyes as I stared up at him.
Jily:But today's my day off, right?
Nico stepped over to my windows and yanked the curtains open, filling the room with sunlight.
He turned back to me with a beaming smile, his expression as bright as the sunshine.
Nico:I know. But you're going out, so it's time to get ready.

=======

Nico:I know. But you're going out, so it's time to get ready.
Jily:I am? Since when?

(I was just going to stay in bed and maybe read a book, or do some embroidery—something quiet.)

I pulled a face at Nico as he puttered around the room, picking out my clothes and ignoring any further questions.

***

In spite of my confusion, I did as I was told and got dressed and ready to go out. I knew Nico always had his reasons.
But he took me down into town without telling me anything about what was going on,
and I couldn't help but pout as he left me alone with assurances that I wouldn't be there for long.

(It's all well and good to tell me to wait here, but—)

I glanced around me, feeling nervous and a little exposed, when right at that moment—
???:Sorry to keep you waiting.

(Don't tell me—)

I turned at the familiar voice to find Giles standing behind me.
Jily:Giles? Wait, what's going on?

(What on earth are you doing here?)

Giles gave me a sudden broad smile as I stared up at him in confusion.
Giles:I believe this is something you requested of me once before.
Giles:A 'meet up', wasn't it?

(Oh! Giles—)

His words immediately brought to mind a conversation we'd had some time ago.

〝Giles:A—date?〞
〝Jily:Yes. One day, I'd like us to meet up somewhere.〞
〝Jily:And then I'd like to go on a normal date with you.〞

I caught my breath with delight as I stared up at him.

(I can't believe he remembered that for me!)

Giles:Shall we go?
Giles smiled at me as he offered me his hand.

229248abu3e9v4w9.gif

Giles, Chapter 2:

Giles:Shall we go?
Giles offered me his hand, and I placed my hand in his.
For a moment I was so overwhelmed with happiness I couldn't think of a thing to say.

(I never really imagined we'd ever be able to go on a regular date like this.)

Giles:Jily.
Giles smiled at me, and reached out with his free hand to touch the hat I was wearing.
Giles:Be careful it doesn't blow away in the breeze.
Jily:Okay.
I nodded as I returned his smile, and he squeezed my hand gently.
Giles:That's my girl.

***

And so we wandered around town, our hands linked together, looking in shops just like a regular couple.

(There are so many people out today!)

The streets were more crowded than even I was used to, and I glanced up at Giles in concern.
Jily:Are you okay, Giles?
Giles:I am.
Giles nodded, and then he tugged gently on my hand, pulling me closer to him.

(That's not what I meant!)

He leaned closer and whispered in my ear, his voice almost lost in the hustle and bustle around us.
Giles:I'm more worried about you—don't go getting lost now.
Jily:As if I would!
I mock-pouted up at him, and he laughed softly as he stood up straight again.
He glanced around us and began to lead me through the crowds again, and I gazed up at his profile.

(Somehow I feel like I can just forget that I'm the princess for a while,
(and pretend that I'm just a normal girl, and he's just a normal guy.)

I squeezed his fingers again, enjoying the moment for what it was.

=======

At last Giles and I left the busy market behind us, and stepped into one of the less crowded side streets.
Giles glanced around us as we walked past the smaller stores,
but suddenly he stopped and looked upwards, his expression serious.
Jily:Giles?

(I wonder what's wrong?)

I stopped as well, just a step ahead, and gazed up at him.
Giles:Well now—it looks like it's going to rain.
Jily:Oh no! Really?
As I stared up at the sky, Giles raised his free hand, palm facing upwards.
At that moment, a spattering of raindrops fell, landing on his upturned palm and both our faces.

(Why did it have to rain today?)

Without warning the rain suddenly grew heavier, pelting down on us both,
and within seconds small streams were running down the streets around us.
Giles:Well, there's not much we can do now. Let's make a run for it.
Jily:Okay!
Giles began to run down the narrow street, and I ran after him as fast as I could.
By the time we made it back to the palace we were completely soaked through.
But the rain was easing already, and I could see glimpses of blue sky between the clouds.
I couldn't help but smile as I peered out the window at the sky.

(I know it rained all over us at the end there, but—)

I thought back to Giles and I, running together through the rain, both of us laughing.
Even that was a happy memory, one that I wanted to cherish and hold dear.

(That was just as fun as the rest of it, honestly.)

As I stood there grinning foolishly at myself, I heard a knock at the door.
???:Are you finished getting changed?

=======

There was a knock at my door, and a moment later Nico stepped in my room.
Nico:I heard you got caught in the rain. Are you okay?
Jily:I'm fine. Thanks, Nico.
I smiled at him, and watched as he carried a tray of tea things into my chamber and set it down on the table.
Nico:Actually, Giles told me I should bring you some hot tea.
Jily:He did?
I raised my head with a smile at the sound of Giles's name, and my eyes met Nico's.
His eyes danced with amusement at my reaction, and I pressed my lips together.

(Gah—stop teasing me, Nico.)

Nico:He said to make sure you didn't catch a chill.
Nico beamed brightly at me, and then turned to glance out the window.
Nico:That said, I'm not a fan of the rainy season. You never know when it's gonna suddenly start raining.
Jily:Well, I know what you mean.
I followed his gaze to the window, and saw that the sun was finally peeking out from behind the clouds.
Jily:But even so, I like the rain.
Nico:You do?
Nico glanced back at me in surprise, and I grinned at him.
Jily:The rain helps the plants grow, and—well, more than anything, I love the customs we have this time of year.
My favorite custom was that during rainy times like this,
the local girls would gather together indoors and sew their own dresses.
Jily:I love it when everyone gets together and sews dresses. Even just thinking about it makes me feel happy.
Nico smiled a little as he listened to me talk,
and then gave a soft sigh and began to pour me a cup of tea.
Nico:I can totally picture you enjoying that.

=======

After Nico had left my room, I sat down on my bed thoughtfully.
I smiled again as I remembered how much fun my date with Giles had been.

(I'd like to do something for him, to thank him for the date.)

I stretched out on my bed, pondering over what he might like.

(I wonder what the girls down in town do for their partners?)

I closed my eyes slowly until at last I hit on an idea.
Jily:Ooh, I know!

***

I decided that I wanted to cook something for Giles,
but although I'd made my way down to the kitchen to pour through cookbooks, I couldn't decide what to make.

(He's not easy to please.)
(I want to make something that'll make him happy.)

I finally decided some sort of pie would be best, since I knew how much he liked sweet things.
I picked up a knife and was reaching for the bowl of apples, when—
Leo:What's this? Are you a wife-in-training?
Jily:Leo!
I turned with a start, the knife still held in my upraised hand.
Leo:Hey, c'mon, it's not worth stabbing me over!
Leo laughed lightly as he reached out and took the knife away from me.
Leo:You shouldn't be playing with pointy things, anyway.
Jily:What's that supposed to mean?
I frowned a little as I stared at him, and he narrowed his eyes slightly.
Leo:If you hurt yourself, Giles is just gonna get mad. At me too, since I'm here.
Jily:I'm not gonna hurt myself!
But I quickly clenched my fingers into a fist as I spoke.

(I'm not about to tell him that I cut myself already.)

Leo's eyes followed my gesture, and before I could stop him, he reached for my hand.
Leo:Don't tell me—am I too late?

=======

Leo made me go back to my room, and I stood there in silence, scowling down at my finger.

(It's just a little cut. Why did he have to make such a fuss?)

I sighed as I thought about what he'd said, back there in the kitchen.

〝Leo:I'll have Nico bring some antiseptic, so you just go back to your room.〞

I heard a knock at the door then, and I raised my head quickly.
Jily:Nico, is that you?
But when the door opened, it wasn't Nico who greeted me.
Giles:I heard Leo asking Nico for antiseptic.
Jily:Giles!
Giles was the last person I was expecting at my door, and my voice came out as a startled squeak.
Jily:It's nothing, really. I promise.
Giles:Really.
Giles narrowed his eyes as he stepped into my room, closing the door behind him.
Giles:Show me, please.
I pressed my lips together in frustration, but at last I offered him my hand.
Giles gazed down at the small cut on the tip of my finger, and sighed softly.
Giles:It may be nothing major, but I'd prefer it if you wouldn't hurt yourself at all.
Jily:I know, I know.
I sighed as I sat down at the table and let him apply antiseptic to my finger.

(It feels weird having him baby me like this.)

I turned my face away, trying to hide my smile, and at last Giles spoke again.
Giles:I'm done.
Jily:Thank you.
I started to raise my head again, but then I realized my hair was tangled in my necklace, and I winced as it pulled.
Giles:Now look at you.
Giles put the antiseptic down on the table, and reached towards my necklace.
Giles:Hold still.

229248abu3e9v4w9.gif

Giles, Chapter 3:

Giles reached towards my necklace, his fingers touching the hair that had tangled in the chain.
Giles:Hold still.
Jily:Okay, okay.
His face hovered close to mine, his expression intent and focused, and I could feel his warm breath on my neck.

(He's so close—if he turned his head just a little towards me...)

I turned my head away, trying to hide my expression in case my thoughts were showing on my face.
I could feel Giles's gaze on me, and I wondered if he'd already guessed.
I glanced at him in time to see him smiling slightly.
Giles:I've untangled it.
His hands moved away from my necklace, and I breathed a sigh of relief as my head moved easily.
Jily:Thank y—
Before I could finish speaking, Giles's hand moved around behind my neck, pulling me towards him.
He lowered his head, pressing his lips against my hair where it had been tangled a moment before.
Jily:Giles—
I caught my breath, and Giles gave a soft laugh, his breath warm against my skin.
Giles:I'm just teasing you.
His hand moved away again, and he stood up before I could say anything more.
Giles:Try not to injure yourself again, Princess.

***

That evening—
I was exhausted from my busy day, and I lay curled up in my bed, sound asleep.
As I slept, I dreamed the same dream I'd had before.

(Who is that?)

???:I swear my eternal love to you.

=======

I was dreaming again, the same dream I'd had before.
I caught my breath as I gazed up at the person standing before me.

(This is—)

It was Giles who stood there, gazing down at me.
Giles:I swear my eternal love to you.
Jily:Oh, Giles—
As I spoke his name he reached out and took my left hand in his.
Giles:What about you, Jily?
Jily:Giles, I—
I opened my mouth to speak, but right at that moment—

(Oh!)

A sudden bright light assaulted my eyes, and I squeezed them tightly shut.
When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in bed, staring up at the ceiling above me.
I sat up slowly, rubbing the sleep from my eyes.
Then I looked down at my left hand, the same hand Giles had been holding in my dream.
My ring finger was wrapped in the bandage Giles had applied the day before when I'd cut myself.
At last I sighed and climbed out of bed, slowly getting ready for the day ahead.
Nico:Good morning, Jily!
Jily:Good morning, Nico.
I glanced over while brushing my hair to find Nico standing in the doorway, smiling broadly.
Nico:I'd like you to come with me just for a bit, if that's okay?
Jily:What for?
I frowned suspiciously at him as he beckoned for me to follow him.

(Now what's going on?)

=======

***

Nico wouldn't tell me anything more,
but when I followed him, he led me to the bathroom.
Jily:Nico?

(Why would I have a bath now? I always have them in the evening.)

I'd asked him multiple times on the way there, but he'd refused to explain.
But I did as I was told, thinking over what he'd said as I sank down into the bathwater.

〝Nico:It's still a secret, okay?〞
〝Nico:But get ready all the same—it's important!〞

I kept going over it in my head as I soaked myself in the bath,
but I couldn't come up with anything.

(What on earth am I getting ready for, exactly?)

At last I stood up slowly, and climbed out of the bath.

(I guess I can ask him again when I get back to my room.)

***

I returned to my chamber to find a dress I'd never seen before laid out on the bed waiting for me.
I shrugged helplessly and changed into the dress. At this point,
there was nothing else to do but go along with it.
Nico returned to my room not long after, and he stared at me seriously for a long moment.
Nico:Yes, that's it—it's perfect!
Jily:Nico, what's going on?

(I can't imagine what all this preparation is for.)

I was still waiting for him to at least give me a hint or something when the door suddenly opened again.
Giles:Ahh, yes.
Jily:Giles?
Giles stepped into the room, and he smiled suddenly as he gazed at me.
Giles:It suits you perfectly, Jily.

=======

Giles:It suits you perfectly, Jily.
Jily:Thank you.
I couldn't help but smile back at his kind words.

(But this isn't the time to be getting all gushy. What's going on?)

Jily:Giles—
Before I could say anything more, Giles's gaze moved past me to stare at something on the table.
Giles:What's that?
Jily:What's what?
I turned around, following his gaze.
There on the table was a small square pillow—I recognized it as a ring pillow.
Jily:Um—that's for putting rings on. But Giles—
Giles:I see.
Giles smiled brightly and stepped across the room, picking up the pillow.
Giles:Very well, can I get you to carry this with you?
Jily:But—
Giles handed me the pillow, and I took it without thinking as I stared up at him.
Jily:Seriously, Giles—what's going on?
Giles reached out, his fingers gently brushing against my wrist.
He gently took hold of my hand, twining his fingers in mine,
and then lifted his other hand towards my mouth.
He placed a single finger against my lips, and made a soft 'shhh' noise.
Giles:It's still a secret.
Then without another word he turned and led me out of the room.

=======

I followed after Giles as he led me out of the palace, taking a longer route to avoid anyone seeing us.
I knew by now how much he enjoyed teasing me like this, so there was no point asking him what was going on.
I simply followed along quietly, knowing that he'd tell me when he was good and ready.

(But where the heck is he taking me this time?)

At last we stepped beyond the palace gates, and I realized there was a carriage waiting for us.
Jily:Giles?

(Don't tell me this is going to be some work thing after all, and we have to travel all day?)

As I stared dubiously at the carriage, I felt Giles squeeze my fingers gently.
Giles:Are you worried, Jily?
I looked up to find him smiling down at me, and I couldn't help but smile back.
I shook my head a little as I replied.
Jily:No—as long as you're with me, I'm fine.

(It probably sounds silly, but I'm never really worried when I have Giles by my side.)

Giles:Is that so?
Giles's smile widened as he opened the carriage door for me.
Then suddenly he turned towards me again, as if he'd just remembered something.
Giles:All right then, please close your eyes.
Jily:Seriously?
I blinked up at him in disbelief, and he smirked at me, his expression mischievous.
Giles:There's nothing to worry about, I promise.
He reached out and covered my eyes with his hands.
Giles:But I'd like you to keep your eyes closed until I tell you otherwise.

Giles, Chapter 4-Sweet Ending:

I sat in the carriage with my eyes closed, feeling it sway under me as we moved slowly.

(Where on earth is Giles taking me?)

Giles was holding my hand tightly, and I squeezed his fingers gently.
Giles:We're almost there.
I could hear the smile in his voice, and my heart skipped a beat.
At that moment, the carriage finally stopped, and the sudden silence seemed overloud.
Giles's hand moved away from mine, and I felt the carriage sway slightly under me.
Giles:All right, now open your eyes.
I opened my eyes slowly to find Giles standing just beyond the carriage door, offering me his hand.
Jily:Giles, where are we?
I took hold of Giles's hand, and let him help me down from the carriage.
As I stepped down, I could see at last where we were.
I caught my breath at the scenery that unfolded before my eyes.

(I don't believe it—is this really—)

I looked up at Giles in disbelief, and he gave me a wide smile.
Giles:I believe you said this is something you'd dreamed of.
We were standing in front of the church I'd dreamed about: the church where your dreams of eternal love would be fulfilled.
We stepped into the church together, and the solemn silence of the place enveloped us.

(Is it just the two of us?)

My heart was pounding in my chest and I gazed around me, unable to entirely believe that we were really there.
Giles:I know this isn't the real thing, but—
Giles's deep voice seemed to echo in the stillness.
Giles:Why don't we have our own ceremony, right here?

=======

Giles:I know this isn't the real thing, but why don't we have our own ceremony, right here?
Giles's deep voice echoed loudly in the stillness of the church.
Jily:Oh, Giles—

(I never imagined we'd ever be able to do this. It's like a dream come true.)

I couldn't even find the words to express how I felt, and my eyes blurred with tears for a moment.

(I don't think I've ever felt so happy!)

Giles:Jily, please give me your hand.
Jily:Of course.
I smiled brightly up at Giles, and stepped towards him.
The two of us slowly walked down the aisle together until we reached the altar.
Giles stopped suddenly, and turned to face me.
Giles:This is where we say our vows, right?
Jily:Yes, it is.
My voice was trembling a little with nervousness and excitement.
Giles gave a soft laugh as he gazed down at me,
and then he leaned towards me, his face moving close to mine.

(Giles? It's not time for the kiss yet!)

His mouth moved towards my ear, and he whispered softly in a voice only I could hear.
Giles:These vows are for you, and you alone.
His breath was like a soft sigh against my ear,
as he murmured words I could barely hear.
I caught my breath, for a moment overwhelmed.

(Did he just say—)

I raised my head and stared up at him, meeting his gaze directly.
Then I spoke softly, my voice almost as quiet as his had been.
Jily:As do I.
Giles:I know.
Giles was still smiling gently as he lowered his face towards mine for a soft kiss.

=======

We exchanged whispered vows, and then Giles pressed his lips softly against mine.
It was a brief kiss, featherlight and barely there, and my eyes fluttered shut for just a moment.
I sighed softly as our lips parted again, and raised my gaze to meet his.
His face still hovered close to mine, his eyes searching my expression.
Giles:Jily—did I make your dream come true?
Jily:You did.
My smile was wide and bright as I stared up at him, nodding firmly.

(I never even expected that date down in town, much less our own private wedding.)

I was still trembling with the excitement, and I took a deep breath, trying to calm myself down.

(It's like I was able to forget being the princess, and be a normal girl with normal dreams for a while.
(I never expected I'd ever be able to feel that way again.)

I just couldn't stop smiling as I reached out to take hold of Giles's hands.
He leaned closer to me again, and placed a soft kiss against my forehead.
Giles:Well, then—
His soft, sighing breath ruffled my hair, and my pulse sped up again.
Giles:Shall we go home?
Jily:Already?
Without warning, he lifted me up into his arms, and carried me back down the aisle of the church.
Jily:Giles?

(What's wrong? Why are we leaving so soon?)

But he made no attempt to explain,
so I wrapped my arms around his neck and let him carry me away.

=======

By the time we returned to the palace,
the sun had almost set, and the sky was slowly turning dark overhead.
We stepped into my chamber, and Giles closed the door quietly behind us.
The room fell silent, and I turned slowly to face him.

(He hasn't said anything since we left the church. I wonder what he's thinking.)

I looked up at him to find him gazing down at me, his expression serious.
Jily:Giles?
Giles:Jily, do you know what comes next after a wedding?

(After a wedding—)

I widened my eyes in surprise as I realized what he was talking about.

(Don't tell me—is that why he rushed us all the way back here?)

I raised my eyebrows as I stared up at him, and he narrowed his eyes, just a little.
He stepped towards me, catching me gently by the shoulders,
and a moment later he leaned forwards, his lips moving to capture mine.
His kiss was strong and passionate, and I moaned softly as our mouths moved together,
closing my eyes and reaching up to wrap my arms around him.
As he kissed me again and again, I began to feel light-headed.

(Oh Giles—I need—)

At last our lips parted, and I realized we were both panting softly, our warm breath mingling together.
Giles:You mean you don't know?
Jily:C'mon, Giles—
He smirked at me, and pushed me gently down onto the bed before I could say another word.
I lay back and gazed up at him as he climbed onto the bed, leaning over me.
Giles:It's our wedding night, is it not?

=======

Giles:It's our wedding night, is it not?
His expression was entirely too smug, and for a moment I just lay there, pouting up at him.

(He's enjoying this far too much.
(But then, I can't deny that I'm enjoying it, too.)

Instead of replying, I lay there waiting to see what he'd do next, and he smirked down at me again.
He reached out and gently lifted a lock of my hair, tucking it behind my ear.
Then he leaned in and pressed a sudden kiss against my earlobe, his tongue sliding across the sensitive skin.
It felt somehow ticklish and yet delightful all at once,
and I squirmed underneath him, gasping and laughing in the same breath.
He sat back a little, his fingers gently stroking my cheek.
Giles:If you don't like it, I can stop.
Jily:Giles—
Our eyes met, and I could see the teasing light sparkling deep in his gaze.
I could feel warmth building up inside me as I anticipated all that was yet to come.
Giles's other hand slid slowly down, his fingers gently caressing my bare knee.
The simple touch sent a shiver up my leg, and I trembled a little underneath him.

(You big tease—you know I love it.)

My pulse sped up as his fingers stroked me gently, but without moving any further.
Jily:I like it—you know that.
Desire ran hot through me, and I knew he could see it clear in my expression.
Giles:I like it when you're honest.
His fingers on my knee slid slowly upwards, his caress gentle yet firm and sure.
My body began to tense up, quivering in expectation,
and he leaned forward and pressed his lips against mine.
His tongue slipped inside my mouth, seeming to devour me,
and my body moved against him, wanting to be touched and tasted and loved.
Giles:This is what you wanted, isn't it?
Jily:Oh, Giles—yes—

(My wish was to be with you forever and always—and you know that.)

I closed my eyes slowly as I surrendered myself to him completely.

Giles, Chapter 4-Premium Ending:

I kept my eyes closed while Giles took me away to a completely unfamiliar location.
Eventually he helped me down from the carriage again, and led me somewhere by the hand,
until at last he told me to stop and count to a hundred before I opened my eyes.
When I'd reached one hundred, I opened my eyes and stood in silence for a moment.
My eyes were wide as I gazed around me in confusion.

(But why—)

I was standing in the middle of the ballroom.

(Why did he bring me here?)

I looked carefully around the room, but there was no one else there beside me.

(And where did he go?)

At that moment, I heard the sound of footsteps behind me.
My pulse sped up at the sure, steady sound, for I knew it could only be one person.
I took a deep breath, and slowly turned around.
When I raised my head, I saw—
Jily:Giles—
My voice seemed to echo loudly in the large, empty ballroom.
Giles:Jily.
Giles was dressed completely differently to normal, and I stood in silence, unable to take my eyes off him.

(He looks so different—he looks even more beautiful than ever.)

My heart seemed to be pounding louder than ever in my chest.
Giles stopped in front of me, and gave me a small smile.
Giles:Today is a special day.

(What does that mean?)

Giles leaned towards me, and gracefully offered me his hand.
Giles:Today, I will be your partner.

=======

Giles:Today, I will be your partner.
I gazed up at the sweet smile on his face, and then down at his proffered hand.
My heart skipped a beat, and then continued to pound loudly.

(I never imagined that Giles would ever be able to be my dance partner.)

Giles was officially my tutor, not my lover, and so long as that was true,
I could never dream of even taking his hand in the ballroom, much less dancing with him here.
Giles:There's no one here but you and I.
Giles:May I have this dance, Princess?
Giles met my gaze directly, waiting patiently for my response.
A sudden, bright smile flitted across my face as I nodded.
Jily:Of course!

(This is like a dream—I'm so happy right now.)

I placed my hand in Giles's, and squeezed his fingers gently.

***

There was no music in the ballroom, but it didn't matter.
We danced together just as if the music had been playing, and I could hear it inside my head as if it were real.

(This is more wonderful than any dance I've ever had with music playing.)

Giles:I never realized how good it would feel to dance with you like this.
Giles's words were an echo of what I was feeling, and as he smiled down at me, I met it with a smile of my own.
He slowly removed my glove and then raised my hand to his lips, kissing my fingers softly.
Jily:Giles?
Giles:I swear—
Giles's breath was hot against my fingers, and I quivered a little in response.
Giles:—my eternal love to you.

=======

Giles:I swear my eternal love to you.
I widened my eyes in surprise at his words,
as I suddenly remembered the dream I'd had only a few nights ago.

〝Giles:I swear my eternal love to you.〞
〝Giles:What about you, Jily?〞

(Those are the exact same words he said in my dream!)

I stared up at him, wondering suddenly if this was all just a dream.
At that moment, Giles pulled out the ring pillow we'd brought from my chamber.
Jily:Oh, Giles—
Giles:I know this isn't the real thing, but—
He placed the pillow gently in my hand, and wrapped my fingers around it.
Giles:One day I will place a wedding ring on this pillow and offer it to you.
I gazed up at his gentle smile, and the unexpected tenderness in his expression,
and to my surprise I found my eyes blurred with tears.
Jily:Thank you.
Giles leaned closer, and placed a slow, gentle kiss on my lips.
His lips were sweet as they brushed lightly against mine,
and I sighed softly as our lips parted again.
His kiss was like a promise somehow, and my heart was suddenly overflowing with happiness.

***

By the time we returned to my chamber, the sun was setting, and the sky was growing dark.
My room was dim and mysterious somehow, lit only by a single flickering lamp.
Giles kissed me again and again, and I moaned into his mouth.
Our lips parted for a moment, and I could feel my breath, hot and fevered against his lips.

=======

Giles and I sat together on my bed, sharing a warm, fevered kiss.
Each time our lips parted for a moment, I could feel our warm breath mingling.
Jily:Wait, Giles. There's something I want to say.
I reached up and pressed my hands against his chest, pushing him away for a moment,
and he tightened his grip on my waist.
He pulled back a little, and then leaned in and nibbled gently on my ear instead.
Jily:Ahh! Giles!
Giles:I don't suppose it can wait till later?
His voice whispered in my ear, and my body quivered slightly.
His tone was sweet, gentler than usual, and I closed my eyes with a smile.

(Ahh, don't say it like that, you make me forget all my good intentions.)

Jily:Please, I want to say it now.
I let out a long breath, then opened my eyes and smiled up at him again.
Giles gazed down at me silently, his eyes serious and intense.
Then he slowly loosened his grip on me, and leaned back a little.
I turned to face him properly, and as he turned to face me as well, I took a deep breath.
Jily:Giles—
I slowly let out my breath, and tried to find the words to explain my feelings.
Jily:I know I haven't been princess for long, and I'm still not very good at it yet.
Jily:But I will do my best to become someone amazing.

(I want to be someone who's worthy of standing by your side.)

Giles's serious expression relaxed into a sudden smile at my words.
He gazed down at me in silence for a moment, and then spoke in a soft voice.
Giles:As your tutor, that makes me glad to hear. However—

=======

Giles:As your tutor, that makes me glad to hear. However—
The lamp in the room flickered softly, and our shadows grew long on the wall for just a moment.
Giles reached out slowly towards me, his hand gently stroking my cheek.
Giles:If you become any more amazing than you already are, I'm not sure I can handle it.
Jily:Giles—

(He doesn't really think I'm amazing, does he?)

But my heart skipped a beat at the surety in his voice.
Giles slid his hand around behind my head, and drew me slowly towards him.
Our lips met again, and his kisses were even more passionate than they had been a moment ago.
I closed my eyes as I gave myself over to the taste of his sweet lips against mine.
I could hear the soft moans rising in my throat as I moved to wrap my arms around him.
Giles:It might be the end of me.
Our lips parted long enough for him to speak, and then we were kissing again.
His tongue slid into my mouth, twining with mine, and I felt lightheaded at his fevered warmth.
I clung to him as I moaned helplessly, meeting his passion with my own.
His fingers moved down, sliding along my bare collarbone, his caress soft and almost ticklish.
His fingers slid to one side, slipping my dress free of my shoulder and sliding it down, and our mouths parted again.
Jily:Ahh—Giles—

(When you get me this heated up—)

Giles lowered his face to my breasts, sliding his tongue across my bared skin.
My body began to quiver at the sensation, and I clung to his shoulders.

(I can barely think straight.)

I bit my lip, trying to hold on to some last shred of reason, and Giles laughed softly, the sound almost like a sigh.
Giles:You really are—
He paused and then pushed me down onto the bed beneath him.
Giles:If anyone is going to change you, it will be me.
Giles:And it will be for me, not for anyone else.
Jily:I know—
My words were almost breathless as Giles's hands slid slowly across my skin, baring it completely.
Each part that he touched seemed almost on fire somehow,
and as I gazed up at him I wondered how wild my expression was.
Giles:Jily—
The raw sensuality in his voice as he spoke my name was enough to make me quiver all over again.

(If I change for Giles, because of Giles—)

Jily:Ohhh—Giles—
I reached out and cupped his face with my hands.

(Nothing in the world would make me happier.)

Giles, Chapter 4-Secret Ending:

Giles had taken Jily to their final destination without telling her where they were going.
And now he approached her, his footsteps echoing through the ballroom.
Jily:Giles—
Giles:Jily.
He was wearing his most formal clothes, an outfit he normally never wore, and he smiled as he stopped in front of her.

(When I stand before you like this, I feel as if it's just going to confuse us both.
(We'll both end up believing that I'm your prince.)

His smile broadened as he offered her his hand.
Giles:Today is a special day.

(Just for tonight—)

Her eyes were wide as she gazed up at him, and he felt his pulse speed up.
Giles:Today, I will be your partner.
Giles:May I have this dance, Princess?
Giles knew he was asking her something that would normally never be allowed.
Jily:Of course!
Yet she didn't hesitate as she placed her hand in his, and he breathed a soft sigh of relief.

***

There was no music in the ballroom, but it didn't matter.
Giles danced with Jily just as if beautiful music had been flowing through the room around them.

(I always thought dancing was just a courtesy, but—)

Giles:I never realized how good it would feel to dance with you like this.
He spoke honestly, and Jily smiled up at him, her expression suffused with happiness.

(I wonder if you were thinking the same thing.)

His heart seemed to fill with warmth, deep inside him.
He squeezed her hand, gently removing her glove,
and then raised her hand to his lips, kissing her fingers.

=======

Giles placed a gentle kiss on Jily's fingers, and dropped his gaze away from her, just for a moment.

(I feel as though now is the only time I can say it aloud.)

Giles:I swear—
His voice was a soft sigh against her fingers, and he could feel her hand quivering in his grasp.

(Even if I can never hope to be able to hold you openly in my arms—)

Giles:—my eternal love to you.
Jily stared up at him with wide eyes, her expression happy disbelief,
and he brought out the ring pillow he brought with them from her chamber.
Giles:One day I will place a wedding ring on this pillow and offer it to you.

(There are so many things I can never bring myself to say to you.
(Like that I want you to wait for me, and never let your heart sway, even for a moment.)

He leaned towards her, and placed a slow, gentle kiss against her lips.
Her lips felt soft against his, and he smiled as he moved away again.
She sighed softly, her eyes slowly opening, and Giles gave a small laugh.

(And I'm certainly never going to tell you that a single kiss is enough to make me ache with desire.)

***

By the time they returned to Jily's chamber, the sun had set and darkness filled the room but for a single flickering lamp.
Giles sat Jily down on the bed, and then he sat down next to her and began to kiss her.

(When I'm with you, I feel as if I'm no longer myself.
(It's like I have no control at all.)

He normally felt as if he was in control of his emotions, but something about Jily seemed to tear that all apart.
As he deepened their kisses, he suddenly felt her push gently against his chest.
Jily:Wait, Giles. There's something I want to say.
He widened his eyes a little as he stared down at her.

(Right now? Really?)

He pulled back a little, but a moment later he leaned forward again to nibble gently on her earlobe.
Giles:I don't suppose it can wait till later?

=======

Giles:I don't suppose it can wait till later?
He nibbled gently on her earlobe as he whispered softly in her ear.
He felt her whole body quiver in response,
and then she closed her eyes, a smile on her face.

(Ahh, I love her reactions.)

He couldn't help but smile as he pulled back again to gaze down at her face.
Jily:Please, I want to say it now.
There was something in her voice that caught him, and he tried to curb the desire building up inside of him.
She opened her eyes and smiled up at him again, and he let go of her at last, sitting down to face her on the bed.

(I can never deny you when you order me around, Princess.)

He smiled to himself, and then focused on Jily as she began to speak.
Jily:I know I haven't been princess for long, and I'm still not very good at it yet.
Jily:But I will do my best to become someone amazing.
He suddenly found himself smiling again.

(Are you saying that because you think that's what I want to hear?)

He knew she was being serious, yet her sweet, na
Giles:As your tutor, that makes me glad to hear. However—
He reached out slowly and touched her cheek, caressing its warmth with his fingers.
He felt overwhelmed with love for her, and his heart began to pound faster in his chest.

(Would it bother you if I told you they aren't the words I want to hear?)

Giles:If you become any more amazing than you already are, I'm not sure I can handle it.
Without another word, he slipped his hand behind her head and pulled her towards him.
Their lips met again in a passionate kiss, and he heard the sweet sound of her moaning softly.

=======

He kissed her over and over, his mouth hot and fevered against hers, listening to her sighs each time their lips parted.

(It's like all your reactions are perfectly designed to turn me on even more.)

He held her tightly against him, and she wrapped her arms around him.

(And I want to keep those reactions all to myself—I can't imagine ever letting you go.)

As their lips parted for just a moment, he whispered against her mouth.
Giles:It might be the end of me.
He slipped his tongue into her mouth, and her lips opened wider, letting him in.
Something about the gesture made his pulse seem to ring in his ears.
She moaned softly as she pressed against him, and he could feel the passion in her, rising to meet his.
He deepened the kiss as he held her tighter against him.

(I didn't realize how badly I want to keep you all to myself.
(I know you're the princess, and in some ways, you belong to everyone.)

He slid his fingers along her shoulder, slowly sliding her dress off.
She gasped his name softly as their lips parted again, and the sweet sound thrummed straight through him.

(And yet—)

No matter how much he understood things logically, his body refused to listen as he stared at her bare skin.

(I can't help but wish that you could be mine and mine alone—
(Not as the princess, but as my wife, even if it wasn't a real wedding.)

Giles:You really are—
He felt her hands gripping desperately at his shoulders, and he pushed her gently down against the bed.
Her hair seemed to fan out around her as she gazed up at him, and he brushed it gently back from her forehead.
Giles:If anyone is going to change you, it will be me.

=======

He stared directly into her wide, inviting eyes as he spoke.
He felt as though he could see a tiny, desperate reflection of himself in them.
Giles:If anyone is going to change you, it will be me.
Giles:And it will be for me, not for anyone else.

(I want you to be just a woman when you're with me.)

He ran his fingers across her bare skin, watching as her body writhed beneath him.

(Your soft skin, your feverish warmth, your beautiful scent—I want them to be mine and mine alone.)

He could feel the warmth spreading through her skin, and he leaned over and began to trace his tongue along her neck.
Giles:Jily—
The sweet sensuality in his voice was enough to surprise even him,
and Jily quivered at the sound, her voice breathless as she whispered back at him.
Jily:Ohhh—Giles—
She reached up and cupped his face between her hands, and he placed his fingers over hers.

(When this night is over, you won't really be my wife anymore.
(Tonight, just tonight, I want to call your name over and over until my voice is hoarse.)

Giles:Jily...Jily...
Each time he whispered her name, her body quivered and shivered in response.

(Tell me that you're mine, and mine alone.
(And—)

He lowered his mouth to hers, placing a long, deep kiss against her lips.
Giles:Oh, Jily—

(And tonight I'll spend the entire night teaching you
(that I'm yours, and that I'll be yours forever more.)
