Nico:It always surprises me how much you like sweet things, Giles.
Giles:Well, when I thought about what Christmas is to me, it seemed only natural to choose this.
……
Byron watches in amusement as Albert struggles with Benjamin...
Albert:If he were to even think of causing trouble for His Majesty, I would certainly discipline—
Byron:I think it might be better if you disciplined your own pet first, Al.
……
Alyn and Leo start their usual light-hearted bickering...
Alyn:Why is it next to mine?
Leo:C'mon, it's not a big deal if our ornaments are next to each other.
……
Sid and Louis help you decorate the highest parts of the tree...
Sid:I told ya. Be more careful.
Louis:Jily, are you okay? Here.

It was a bright winter morning, and a chilly wind whistled through the trees outside.

(It's gotten really cold recently.)

My breath was fogging as I made my way to the study, reminding me that winter had truly arrived.
Halfway there I passed by the ballroom, and I glanced in through the open doors.
What I spotted inside the ballroom stopped me in my tracks.

(Is that—)

I hesitated, and then stepped through the doors.
My eyes hadn't deceived me—several giant Christmas trees had been set up.

(Wow, it really feels like Christmas now! They haven't finished decorating them, though.)

I stepped closer to the largest tree, staring up at it with mounting excitement.
???:Jily? What are you doing in here?

(Oh!)

I turned in surprise at the gentle voice and found Robert standing behind me.
Robert:Look at those trees. I hadn't realized it was that time of year already.
Jily:I know. I noticed them as I was passing by, and I couldn't help coming in to look.
Jily:Seeing the Christmas trees up like this just makes me all excited somehow.
I grinned up at Robert, and he smiled back at me.
Robert:You've been celebrating Christmas in the palace for a few years now, but—
Robert:How did you used to celebrate it down in town?
Jily:Good question.
I smiled to myself as I sorted through all my old memories.
Jily:We'd all decorate the tree together, and we'd put together advent calendars for everyone...

(The Christmases I've celebrated here in the palace are very grand and exciting, but—
(I really enjoyed those times in town when we'd have fun preparing for Christmas all together.)

Robert:I see.
Robert:You know, if we did that here in the palace, it might help everyone relax for a bit, and stop working so hard.
I caught my breath at his words, ideas forming quickly.
Jily:Why don't we get everyone to help decorate the trees together?
Jily:We could all pick our favorite ornaments and decorate them to our liking.
Robert:That's a lovely idea.
Robert:And everyone could come and help when they were free.
Jily:I'll suggest it to Giles.
I nodded with excitement, and just then Robert's breast pocket began to twitch.
Robert:Oops!
Jily:Robert, what's that?
I watched in surprise until at last a tiny face peeked out of Robert's pocket.
It was his pet hedgehog, Amber, her eyes bright and curious.
Robert:Did you want to see the tree too?
Amber stared up at the tree, her nose twitching, and I giggled.

(You're so cute!)

Robert held Amber out to the tree, and she reached out towards one of the ornaments.
Her tiny paw grabbed hold of it—it was a Santa Claus hat.
Jily:Is this what you want?

(It looks as if it'd be just the right size for you, too!)

I removed the Santa hat from the tree, and placed it gently on Amber's head.
Robert smiled as he looked down at her.
Robert:It suits you, Amber.
Jily:It really does! You look adorable.

(That gives me another idea!
(Everyone has such adorable pets.
(Maybe I should get presents for them so they can enjoy Christmas with us.)

I turned to look at the Christmas tree again.

(I wonder what sort of ornaments people will use to decorate the tree?)

I was so excited by my ideas that I completely forgot about how cold it was...

◆Nico and Giles Special Story◆

Screenshot_20171219-164630

Christmas was approaching, and the town was filled with a warm, celebratory mood.
I stood staring up at the main Christmas tree in the ballroom, my thoughts bright with excitement.

(I can't wait to see how they decorate it!
(I wonder what sort of ornaments they'll each bring?)

At that moment the door opened, and Giles and Nico stepped into the room.
Nico:Jily.
Jily:Nico!
Nico:I brought Giles with me, too.
Giles:I'm sorry if we kept you waiting.
Jily:No, not at all! Thank you both for coming.
I smiled at the sight of Nico's squirrel, Chirol, sitting on his shoulder,
and the way Giles's cat Michelangelo wound around his legs as he walked.
For a moment, both animals seemed to be looking directly at me.
Jily:Chirol, Michelangelo, thank you for coming, too.
Nico:I know you said you wanted to start preparing for Christmas today, but—
Nico:Can I ask why you wanted us to bring Chirol and Michelangelo as well?
Jily:It's because I wanted to give them these.
I reached into my bag and pulled out the small Santa hats I'd prepared for them both.

(I hope they like them.)

I crossed the room and put the hats on each of their heads.
Nico:Wow, that's so cute!
Giles:Well, now. I wasn't expecting to receive a present before Christmas.
Giles:Thank you very much.
Jily:Not at all. They both look stunning, don't you think?
Michelangelo:Meow!
Chirol:Squeak!

(It almost sounds as if you're both thanking me.)

I looked up at Nico and Giles, who were both smiling at me, and I wondered if they were thinking the same thing.
Nico:Thank you, Jily.
Nico:So... did you say the main thing we'd be doing today is decorating the tree?
Jily:Yes! Did you bring an ornament that you like?
Nico:Of course! Why don't we get started?
Nico reached into his pocket, and pulled out a large candy cane ornament.
Jily:Oh! You see those everywhere around Christmas time.
Nico:Exactly! I usually like marshmallows more than candy, but these are different.
Nico:When I see them, I know Christmas is coming, and I get all excited. Don't you?
Jily:Yes, I think I know what you mean.

(That's so like you, Nico.)

I smiled happily as Nico turned to hang the ornament on the tree.

(I wonder what Giles brought?)

Jily:What about you, Giles?
Giles:My ornament is also a type of sweet treat.
Giles held out his hand, and I saw that he was carrying an ornament shaped like a gingerbread man.
Jily:Oh, that's so cute!
Its little frowning face was surprisingly adorable.
Just looking at them was enough to set me off giggling again.
Nico:It always surprises me how much you like sweet things, Giles.
Giles:Well, when I thought about what Christmas is to me, it seemed only natural to choose this.
Giles reached out to hang the gingerbread man on the tree.
Giles:Besides, gingerbread men are supposed to be lucky.
Jily:What? Really?
Giles:Yes. It's said that they used to be made in the hopes of improving people's health.

(I had no idea.)

Nico:You're so knowledgeable, Giles.
Jily:I hope using this ornament means everyone in the palace will be healthy all through next year!
Giles:Yes, so do I.
Giles smiled at me, but then his gaze moved to Nico as his expression changed.
Nico:Is something wrong?
Giles:Nico, Chirol seems to have gone missing.
Nico:What?

(Uh-oh!)

Chirol had been sitting on Nico's shoulder the last time I'd looked, but he was no longer there.
Jily:I wonder where he went?
I turned to look around the ballroom, worried that he'd gotten lost.
But at that exact moment Michelangelo leapt forward and pushed his face between the branches of the tree.
Jily:Michelangelo, what is it?
Giles leaned over to look, and then turned to smile at me.
Giles:It would seem we don't need to go looking for Chirol after all.

(Don't tell me—)

Michelangelo pulled his head out of the tree and turned to face us.
He was carrying Chirol gently by the scruff of the neck.
Chirol:Chu!

(You were hiding in the tree?!)

Nico:What were you doing in there, Chirol?
Michelangelo set Chirol on the floor, and he scampered up Nico's leg, and then all the way up to his shoulder.
Giles:I guess squirrels feel more relaxed when they're hiding in the branches of a tree.
Nico:If you like it that much, I'll bring you to look again.
Chirol:Squeak!
Chirol sounded so happy that all three of us started laughing.
Giles:At any rate, we should both be getting back to work.
Jily:Of course. Thank you so much for coming.
Giles:It was fun to get a taste of Christmas before the actual day.
Nico:Me too! Thanks for inviting me, Jily!

(Thank goodness! It seems like you both had fun!)

Nico:Next up is Al and King Byron, right?
Jily:Yes. I think they're in their guest rooms. Could you let them know to come by?
Nico:Leave it to me.
Giles:Our Christmas tree this year will be more wonderful than ever before.
Giles looked up at the tree, his eyes bright.
Giles:I'm looking forward to seeing it finished.
Jily:So am I!
The candy cane and gingerbread man ornaments seemed to fill the room with a warm, sweet vibe.
I smiled happily to myself as I waved goodbye to Nico and Giles...

◆Albert and Byron Special Story◆

Screenshot_20171219-164649

It was a short while after Giles and Nico had left the ballroom.
I was just finishing up hanging some other ornaments when Byron and Albert walked in.
Byron:What a wonderful Christmas tree.
Albert:Yes, it is.
Jily:Thank you so much for coming by like I asked.
Jily:You too, Spinner and Benjamin.
Byron's snowy white owl, Spinner, was sitting calmly on Byron's arm as he looked up at the tree.
Albert's rabbit Benjamin was sitting at his feet, staring up at the tree with his whiskers twitching.
Albert:You're asking everyone to bring ornaments for the tree, correct?
Jily:Yes, that's right. But before that, I have presents for you.
I reached into my bag and removed a Santa hat which I placed carefully on Spinner's head.

(Oh, it's the perfect fit!)

Byron:So this is why you wanted me to bring Spinner with me.
Byron:Thanks. It suits him.
Byron smiled faintly as he looked down at Spinner in his Santa hat.
Jily:I have one for you too, Benjamin.
I crouched down next to Benjamin, and he hopped closer and looked up at me patiently.
Jily:Good boy.
Albert:That's completely different to how he acts with me.
Jily:Really?
I placed the Santa hat gently on Benjamin's head, and lifted him into my arms as I stood up.
Jily:He looks adorable in it.
Albert:Yes, he does. Thank you very much.
Albert smiled at me, and reached out to take Benjamin from me.
But as soon as Benjamin was in his arms, he began to struggle and fuss.

(Does that mean he doesn't like it?)

Albert:You were perfectly fine when the princess was holding you.
Albert looked so disgruntled that I couldn't help giggling.

(You seem so serious, Albert, but Benjamin looks more like he's playing.)

Meanwhile, Spinner continued to perch quietly on Byron's arm.
He watched coolly as Albert and Benjamin continued to struggle.
Jily:Spinner and Benjamin are complete opposites, aren't they?
Albert:That's because Spinner is His Majesty's pet.
Benjamin at last seemed to settle, and Albert adjusted his hold on the rabbit.
Albert:If he were to even think of causing trouble for His Majesty, I would certainly discipline—
Benjamin suddenly reached up and began to bat at Albert's face with his paws.
Albert:Why you! How dare you do that when I'm talking!
Byron:I think it might be better if you disciplined your own pet first, Al.
Byron:Although I think he's like that around you because you let your guard down with him.
Albert frowned a little at Byron's words, but he said nothing.
Jily:They fight because they care, right? I hear that said a lot.

(It's not that they actually dislike each other.)

Albert:Well, there's nothing more I can do.
Albert put Benjamin down on the floor, and then reached up to adjust his glasses.
Albert:At any rate, please let me show you my ornament.
Albert reached into his pocket and pulled out a large silver ornament shaped like a world globe.
Jily:Wow! It's so detailed!
Albert:Yes. I purchased it several years ago when visiting one of the outlying districts in Stein.
Albert:The area is famous for its silverwork.
Albert hung the globe carefully on the tree as he spoke.
It spun a little, reflecting the light from the window all around the room.

(You've had it for years,
(yet it's as bright and new as if you bought it yesterday.
(That's so like you.)

Byron:I guess it's my turn now.
Byron reached into his pocket and soon revealed a beautiful star-shaped ornament.
Jily:You like watching the stars, don't you, King Byron?
Byron:Yes, I do. There's a place in Stein that is perfect for star-gazing.
Byron:I'll take you there next time you visit, as thanks for the gift you gave Spinner.
Jily:Oh, thank you! I'll definitely look forward to that.
Byron:Please do.
Byron gave me a brief smile as he hung the ornament on the tree.

(The tree looks even more wonderful than it did before.)

I stared up at the tree, fascinated by each of the beautiful ornaments hanging off it.
Albert:I never imagined I'd end up decorating a Christmas tree at Wysteria Palace.
Byron:Neither did I. It's a strange feeling.
Jily:I'm sorry for dragging you into this.
Byron:No, I don't mind. It's been fun.
Albert:However, we do have a meeting to attend, so we should be heading off.
Albert:Is there anyone else who hasn't decorated the tree yet? We can let them know to come and see you.
Jily:Oh—well, if you don't mind, would you let Alyn and Leo know?

(If I remember correctly,
(they should both be on their break right about now.)

Albert:Very well. If you will excuse us...
I watched in silence as Byron and Albert stepped out of the ballroom.
Then I turned back to gaze at the beautiful ornaments they'd hung on the tree.

(Each ornament seems to reflect the personality of the person who chose it.
(I can't wait to see what everyone else is going to bring!)

I could already picture in my mind the finished tree, shining and beautiful.
I smiled excitedly to myself as I waited for my next visitors...

◆Alyn and Leo Special Story◆

Screenshot_20171219-165131

(I hope Alyn and Leo will get here soon!)

I stood in front of the tree, staring up at it as I waited for them.
???:Woof!

(Oh! Is that them?)

I turned just as a dog came bounding towards me.
Jily:Arthur!
I crouched down to pat Alyn's dog, Arthur, a smile on my face.
A moment later Leo's parrot, Sebastian, came soaring into the room.
Sebastian:Sebastian, here!
Jily:Hello, Sebastian!

(You're both as lively as ever.)

As I smiled up at Sebastian, Alyn and Leo came striding into the room.
Alyn:Arthur, Sebastian, you're both far too worked up.
Leo:They're just in a good mood, right?
Sebastian:Good mood! Good mood!
Sebastian sounded so delighted as he circled the room that I couldn't help giggling.
Jily:Alyn, Leo—thank you for coming.
Leo:Not at all. Thank you for inviting us to do something fun.
Alyn:So, is this the tree you want us to decorate?
Jily:Yes! But first of all—do you mind if I give Arthur and Sebastian a present each?
Alyn:I don't mind.
I crouched down, and Arthur came over and sat in front of me.
Sebastian swooped over as well and landed beside him, wings folded, head cocked to one side.
Jily:Here you go. It's a little early, but I thought it might bring out the Christmas mood a little.
I placed a Santa hat on each of their heads, and smiled at them.

(They're both a perfect fit.)

Alyn:Lucky boy, huh? It suits you.
Arthur:Woof!
Sebastian:Sebastian, so cool!
Leo:Yep, you look very cool.
Leo:Thank you, Jily.
Jily:You're most welcome.

(You all seem happy about it! I'm so glad.)

Alyn:Okay, let me start decorating then.
Alyn pulled an ornament out of his pocket that was shaped like a sword.
Jily:A sword? It's beautiful.
Alyn:Well, I am a knight after all.
Alyn:And you said we could pick our favorite ornaments.
Jily:Yes, of course!

(I know your sword is precious to you, Alyn.)

Leo:I wonder where I should hang mine?
Leo stood next to Alyn, staring up at the tree, holding an ornament shaped like a book.
Alyn:Why'd you pick a book?
Leo:The same reason you picked a sword, I imagine.
Leo:The knowledge I've gained from reading books is like a sword to me.
Leo:It helps me to protect others, and it allows me to go on the offensive, too.
Alyn:Really.
Leo:Oh, there's a good spot.
Leo reached up and hung his book ornament right next to Alyn's sword ornament.
Alyn:Why is it next to mine?
Leo:C'mon, it's not a big deal if our ornaments are next to each other.
Alyn was frowning, but Leo grinned reassuringly at him.
I couldn't help but smile as I listened to them go back and forth.
Jily:I can never tell whether you two like each other or hate each other.
Arthur:Woof!
Sebastian:Like, like!
Sebastian warbled the words happily from his perch on Arthur's back.
Alyn:Sebastian, you little—
Alyn rounded on Sebastian, a scowl on his face.
Sebastian launched into the air, his feathers ruffled as he flew hastily to Leo's shoulder.
Leo:Stop teasing him so much.
Leo:But you know... this year's tree is looking really amazing.
Leo looked up at the tree, a bright smile on his face.
Leo:There's so many different ornaments, and they're all so unique.
Jily:Yes, I know! And once Sid and Louis bring theirs, it'll be all done.
Leo:I saw them in the corridor just now, having some sort of disagreement.
Alyn:I'm not sure it was a disagreement, exactly—I think Louis was just looking annoyed.
Leo:We can ask them to come in if you like.
Jily:That'd be great, thanks.
I waved to Alyn and Leo as they left, and then looked up at the tree again.
The sword ornament and the book ornament had spun away from each other, but their backs were perfectly lined up.

(The things they each give meaning to are different, but they both represent what's important to them.)

I grinned to myself as I studied the ornaments, each so representative of the man who'd chosen it.

(And it would be lovely if they could just talk to each other like normal one day.)

I knew Christmas was a time when everyone relaxed and opened their hearts a little.
I sent up a silent wish to the star at the top of the tree that one day, Alyn and Leo would be able to smile at each other...

◆Sid and Louis Special Story◆

Screenshot_20171224-000219

It was a short while after Leo and Alyn had left the ballroom.
Sid and Louis stepped in through the door, each with their own pet.
Jily:Jess, Lucia—hold still for a moment.
I leaned over a placed a tiny Santa hat on each of their heads.
The dalmation Jess seemed to grin up at me, her tail wagging.
The little blue bird, Lucia, warbled in a sweet, clear voice.
Sid:So this is why ya wanted us to bring them along, huh?
Louis:Thanks, Jily. Lucia looks very happy.
Jily:You're welcome.

(I'm so glad you all seem to like the presents!)

Jily:So... did you bring along your favorite ornaments?
Sid:Yeah. It was a real hassle, but I brought something.
Sid produced an ornament shaped to look like a plump black bird.
Jily:A bird?
Sid:Yeah, isn't this Christmassy enough for ya? It's a turkey.
I stared up at Sid, for a moment not sure how to react.
Jily:You mean, like, eating turkey at Christmas?
Sid:What else would a turkey be for?

(Well, I have to admit that's so like you.)

I was still trying to decide whether to laugh or not when Louis said,
Louis:Sid, you've got no taste.
Sid:Wouldn't know what to do with it if I did.
Louis:I see.
Louis spoke dispassionately as he pulled out something white and fluffy.
Sid:And what the heck is that?

(Is that some sort of soft cotton?)

Louis:It's meant to be snow. Since we're indoors, I thought this might help it feel more like the Christmas season.
Jily:You're right! If we hang that on the tree, it'll look just like real snow.
I helped Louis as he draped the pieces of cotton on the tree.
Louis:So what did you pick to put on the tree, Jily?
Jily:This.

(I'm pretty sure I put it in here, anyway.)

I reached into my bag and soon found the holly-shaped ornament I'd prepared.
There was a stool at the foot of the tree, and I stepped up onto it.
I reached up for an open spot on the tree to hang my holly.

(Just a little further...)

But it was higher than I'd thought, and I couldn't quite reach it.

(That's odd.)

Sid:It's too far.
Jily:No, it's fine, I can reach it.
I stood up on tiptoe, and the stool clattered and shifted beneath me.
Jily:Waaaah!
I realized I was falling, and I squeezed my eyes shut.
A moment later I felt warm arms around me, supporting me and stopping me from falling.
Sid:I told ya. Be more careful.
Jily:I'm sorry. You're right.

(I'm so glad you caught me, though!)

I could feel myself blushing, but I gave Sid a quick smile.
As I looked past him, I realized Louis was staring at him coolly.
Louis:How long do you intend to keep hugging the princess, Sid?
Sid:She's the one who fell on me. I ain't got much choice, here.
Louis:Jily, are you okay? Here.
Louis ignored Sid completely, reaching out to offer me his hand.
Jily:Thanks.
I took hold of Louis's hand, and he helped stand me upright again.
Louis:Let me have it. I'll put it up for you.
His face was closer than I'd expected, and I blushed a little.
Jily:Oh—thanks. Be careful.
I stepped back as I handed Louis the holly ornament, and I watched quietly as he hung it on the spot I'd been reaching for.
Louis:Is it all done now?
Jily:Yes!
I gazed up at the tree, my heart filled with wonder and delight.
Sid:That's the most disharmonious tree I've ever seen.
Jily:It is. But I like it like that.
The gingerbread man, the candy cane, the globe, the star, the sword, the book, and now the turkey, the snow and the holly.
I had to agree with Sid that none of them really matched each other.

(But this tree is filled with the things that each of us cherishes.
(And that makes it easy for me to love this tree just as it is.)

Sid:That said, I haven't decorated a tree myself like this since I was a kid.
Louis:Neither have I. It was fun. Thank you, Jily.
Jily:Not at all. Thank you for helping out.

(I'm so glad you enjoyed it!)

Sid:Well, my work here is done. I should get going.
Sid stretched languidly and then turned towards the door.
Nico:Have you finished decorating the tree?
Jily:Nico! Did you come to see it?
Nico:Not just me. Look!
I watched in delight as the others trailed into the ballroom after Nico.
Giles:That is quite a lively-looking tree.
Robert:I like it. It shows everyone's unique personalities.
Albert:Is this a sword ornament? It's very well made.
Byron:That white cotton is meant to represent snow, yes?

(I'm so glad you all came! Even Byron and Albert!)

A moment later two more figures stepped into the room.
Leo:Huh? Did everyone have the same idea?
Alyn:Is it finished?
Jily:Leo! Alyn! Yes, everyone's decorations are on the tree now.
Jily:Thank you so much for helping me out today, all of you.
Louis:Thank you too, Jily.
Sid:It ain't half bad every once in a while.
Giles:Well, after all the effort you went to, arranging it for us...
Giles:Perhaps it might be nice to have a special Christmas party this year, all of us together.
The mood in the room was lively and cheerful, and it filled my heart with joy.

(I can't wait to find out what Christmas will be like this year!)

I stood with the others beneath the tree, staring up at it in wonder.
It wasn't quite Christmas yet, but it was still a perfectly wonderful day...
