Prologue:
This is an unforgettable story of first love.
A story of your first meeting with him at the Royal Wysterian Academy...
I walked slowly down the spacious corridor.
Mr. Branche, one of the teachers, was showing me around the academy.
(I never knew how big the academy was until I saw it like this from inside.)
(If I don't want to get lost in here, I'm going to have to do my best, starting tomorrow!)
I sighed softly to myself, and Mr. Branche glanced back at me with a smile.
Mr. Branche:Are you feeling tired? I did go and introduce you to everyone all at once.
Jily:No, it's not that.
Jily:I was just feeling a little nervous, and wondering how often I'm going to get lost.
It was my dream to be a teacher, so I'd studied constantly, and finally my hard work was paying off.
The following day I would start attending Royal Wysterian Academy as a scholarship student.
Mr. Branche:Well, you're right—the school is huge, I imagine it's overwhelming at first.
Mr. Branche:But you'll be fine. You'll get used to it in no time.
Mr. Branche's voice was kind and reassuring, and it eased my nervousness.
Jily:I guess you're right.
I turned to glance out at the schoolyard, visible from the nearby windows.
Mr. Branche went on, his tone still gentle.
Mr. Branche:I know there's lots of things you won't be used to at first.
Mr. Branche:But you only get to enjoy your time as a student once. I hope each day will be memorable for you.
(I only get to enjoy it once, huh? Well, that's true enough.)
(I want to learn everything I can here at Royal Wysterian Academy, and create lots of wonderful memories!)
My heart fluttered with excitement as I imagine how my life at the school was going to go.
Suddenly Mr. Branche looked away, his gaze moving to someone behind me.
Mr. Branche:Goodness, are you still here?
Curious, I turned to see who he was talking to.
At the time I had no idea that it was the boy I would fall in love with...

Leo, Chapter 1:
Mr. Branche:Goodness, are you still here?
I turned curiously to see who Mr. Branche was talking to.
A young man was standing behind me, a bright smile on his face, a vibrant air about him.
???:I had some student council work to deal with.
(The student council are chosen from the most skilled students in each year, aren't they?
(And this guy's one of them? He must be really something!)
I studied the young man with awe.
His gaze turned to meet mine, and then he seemed to realize something.
???:Oh, are you the new scholarship student?
Jily:Yes! My name is Jily. It's a pleasure to meet you.
Leo:I'm Leo Crawford. I'm a junior.
Leo:I guess that means we're in the same class. Right, Mr. Branche?
Mr. Branche:Yes.
(Oh, wow. You seem really nice, I'm glad we'll be in the same class.)
Leo:Well, since we're classmates, feel free to call on me if you need any help.
(You're so friendly!)
Jily:Thank you, Leo.
Leo grinned at me, and offered me his hand, as if asking to shake mine.
I smiled and reached out, placing my hand in his.
But instead of shaking my hand, he wrapped his fingers around it.
(What the—)
=======
Leo wrapped his fingers around my hand, lifting it upwards.
(What the—)
He placed a gentle kiss on the back of my hand.
Jily:Oh!
My heart skipped a beat, and he winked at me as he let go of my hand.
Leo:I'm pretty happy to have such a cute classmate, Jily.
Leo:If you have any problems, you can talk to me about anything.
Jily:Um, okay.
Leo smiled again and then turned and walked away down the corridor.
(You're friendly and all, but that was a bit too much!)
Mr. Branche:Ahh, Leo never changes. Anyway, let me walk you to the gates.
Jily:Thank you.
Mr. Branche smiled at me, and I smiled back as I hurried after him.
As we walked away, I realized that my heart was still pounding.
***
The next day—
I was attending my first class at Royal Wysterian.
(I know you said yesterday that we'd be in the same class,
(so I wasn't surprised to find you here in my classroom, but—)
I glanced at Leo, who was wearing glasses and focusing on the history textbook open in front of him.
(I never expected we'd be sitting right next to each other!)
Male Teacher:Now, for the next question—
(Ahh heck, I'm supposed to be concentrating!)
The teacher's voice brought me back to myself, and I dropped my gaze to my textbook.
Male Teacher:This one's a bit difficult, but Leo, can you name the provisions of this particular civil law?
Leo stood up without hesitation to answer the question.
=======
Leo stood up without hesitation to answer the question.
Leo:Yes, sir.
Leo spoke smoothly, giving the correct answer.
(Leo, you're amazing. Even the teacher said it was a difficult question!)
I couldn't help but be surprised by how knowledgeable he was, which seemed completely at odds with his flashy look.
Male Teacher:That's correct. Well done.
Leo:Thank you.
Leo grinned cheerfully as he sat down again.
I heard voices of admiration chorusing from around us.
Male Student:Leo, you're always so amazing.
Female Student:Leo, you're so perfect at everything. You're so cool!
(So you're really popular with everyone in the class, too. I guess I'm not surprised!)
I glanced over at Leo again, but he was looking back down at his textbook.
***
Several days later—
I stepped out of the library, sighing softly to myself.
(I didn't expect the one book I really wanted to borrow to already be out on loan!
(I mean, there's nothing I can do about it, but—what a shame.)
I sighed again and turned towards the gates to head home.
(Hang on—)
I spotted Leo not far away, heading towards a deserted part of the gardens.
(Leo?)
=======
I spotted Leo not far away, heading towards a deserted part of the gardens.
(Leo?)
Almost every time I'd seen Leo, he'd been surrounded by other people.
I couldn't help but be curious to see him purposely avoiding being seen.
I headed after him into the gardens almost without thinking.
The gardens were quiet as I entered, and I soon spotted Leo sitting on a bench reading a book.
(Why did you come in here to read?)
At that moment, I caught sight of the cover of the book Leo was holding.
Jily:Oh!
(That book—)
Leo looked up then, and I realized that I'd gasped aloud.
Leo:Jily?
Jily:I'm sorry, Leo. I didn't mean to interrupt you while you're reading—
Leo:It's fine. Come over here.
Leo smiled cheerfully at me, so I crossed over and sat down next to him.
Leo:You looked surprised just then—is something the matter?
Jily:No, not really. It's just that I was just in the library trying to borrow the book you're reading.
Leo nodded at my words, his smile understanding.
Leo:I see. In that case then, here you go. You can read it.
Jily:What? But Leo, you were—
I tried to refuse the book he was offering me, but he spoke again, his voice kind.
Leo:I've already read it once, so I don't mind.
(Leo, you're always so sweet.)
He was smiling directly at me as he offered me the book again, and my heart began to race.
Jily:Okay then. Thank you.
I took the book from him gratefully, but a small doubt still lingered in my mind.
Jily:But—why did you come in here to read it?
Leo hesitated for a moment, and then said—
=======
Jily:But—why did you come in here to read it?
Leo hesitated for a moment, and then said,
Leo:I like to read in quiet places.
Leo:I like to treasure the times I spend enjoying my favorite things.
Leo:I could read at the library or the dorm, but I can concentrate better when there's no one around.
(So that's why you like it here.)
(You really love reading, don't you?)
He was clearly so passionate about his reading, and it awed and impressed me.
Yet it surprised me too, because it didn't seem to suit the impression I'd had of him when we first met.
Leo:You didn't expect that of me, did you?
(Oops, did my feelings show in my expression?)
Jily:Well, I just—
His words startled me, and he laughed softly before I could go on.
Leo:You really are honest, aren't you, Jily?
Leo:Don't worry, I hear it a lot. I don't mind.
Jily:Really?
Leo:Yeah. Even I know it's not really a hobby that suits my personality.
Leo gave me a chagrined smile as he spoke.
(Well, it's true that it surprised me, but—)
Jily:That's not true. I think it suits your personality.
Jily:When you talked about how much you liked reading, it made total sense to me.
Leo:Really?
Jily:You have so much knowledge to share when you're called on in the classroom.
Jily:And I always see you in and around the library, too.
Jily:You read so many books, and you know so many things, and I think it's wonderful.
Jily:It's my dream to be a teacher, and it makes me want to follow your example.
Leo's eyes were wide with surprise as he studied me.
(Did I say something weird?)
I blinked at him for a moment, and then opened my mouth to ask.
???:Wonderful, wonderful!
Jily:What the—
Suddenly a voice spoke from somewhere overhead.
Leo, Chapter 2:
???:Wonderful, wonderful!
Jily:What the—
Suddenly a voice spoke from somewhere overhead.
A large parrot with bright red feathers flew down and landed on Leo's shoulder.
Leo:You're interrupting us.
Leo:You're not supposed to come out when Jily is around, Sebastian.
Leo reached up and stroked Sebastian's neck feathers gently.
Sebastian:Sorry, sorry!
(He really seems to like you, Leo.)
Jily:Don't tell me he's yours?
Leo:Yep, I keep him in the dorm with me.
Sebastian:I'm Sebastian!
I couldn't help but giggle at the parrot's bright, cheerful introduction.
Jily:You're very smart, aren't you Sebastian?
Leo:Nah, he's just a chatterbox.
Leo's words were dismissive, yet he continued to stroke Sebastian's head fondly.
(Although, what you said a minute ago—)
Jily:What did you mean that he's not supposed to come out when I'm around?
Leo hesitated, then gave me a wry smile.
Leo:Well, actually—
=======
Leo:Well, actually—he's not supposed to leave the dorm.
Leo:But it's so cramped for him, it doesn't seem fair, does it?
Leo:So I let him out like this, and I try not to let anyone find out.
Jily:I see.
Leo laughed then, poking Sebastian gently in the side of his head.
Leo:Of course, that means he just got found out by you.
(I bet you'd probably get in real trouble for breaking the rules like that.)
(But you're doing it anyway, because you care about Sebastian.)
Jily:You're really kind, Leo.
I smiled at him as I said what I was thinking, and his expression turned almost shy somehow.
Leo:I dunno about that. There'd be hell to pay if he didn't come back.
Sebastian:It's okay, it's okay.
Jily:Sebastian says it's okay.
Leo:Geez, you two.
Sebastian looked so proud of himself, and I couldn't help but laugh.
A moment later Leo began to laugh gently as well.
Leo:At any rate, could you keep it a secret from anyone else for the time being?
Jily:Of course!
I nodded firmly, smiling reassuringly at him, and he went on without hesitation.
Leo:Then it's a secret, just between you and me.
(A secret—just between us?)
Something about the words and the way he said them made my heart skip a beat.
(Ahh—why am I reacting like that?)
Before I could study my feelings properly, Leo reached out and offered me his hand.
=======

(Ahh—why am I reacting like that?)
Before I could study my feelings properly, Leo reached out and offered me his hand.
=======
Leo:Looks like he's already remembering the things you say to him.
Jily:What? Really?
Leo:You told him just yesterday how smart he was, didn't you?
(Oh, now that you mention it—)
〝Jily:You're very smart, aren't you Sebastian?〞
Jily:Wow, he's amazing!
I reached out and gently stroked the top of Sebastian's head.
He narrowed his eyes and leaned against my fingers, looking very smug.
Leo laughed again, and spoke in an amused tone.
Leo:But he's right, I might be a little jealous.
(Wait, what?)
Leo:I mean, I'd rather you wanted to talk to me.
My tummy did a sudden somersault at the unexpected words.
(What do you mean by that?)
I could feel a blush creeping up my cheeks, and I bit my lower lip gently.
Then Leo gave me another bright smile.
Leo:After all, now that we've made friends, I'd like to get to know you better.
(Oh, right. Yeah. That makes total sense.)
(So... why am I getting all flustered?)
Jily:Of course, me too!
I smiled at him, trying to hide the feelings of confusion inside me.
***
Soon I found myself spending more and more time with Leo,
talking to Sebastian and teaching him new words, and sharing books with each other.
=======
One day—
Leo sat alone in his room, sighing softly to himself.
Leo:Lately, I seem to be spending an awful lot of time with Jily.
Leo:Even when I'm reading.
Sebastian:You're a flirt, Leo, a flirt.
Sebastian spoke teasingly from inside his cage.
Leo glanced over at him, smiling ruefully.
Leo:No, I don't think that's all it is.
Leo:I'm not sure how to explain it, but when we're together I feel... relaxed.
Sebastian:Relaxed. Relaxed?
Sebastian's voice was curious as he repeated the word.
Leo sighed again, staring down at the book he'd borrowed from Jily.
***
During class the next day—
Male Teacher:And now let me announce the results of the test I gave you a few days ago.
A buzz of quiet conversation filled the classroom at his words.
(Ahh, now I'm a little nervous.)
Male Teacher:The student who got the highest grade this time was... Leo Crawford.
I watched quietly as Leo stepped up to the front to receive his exam paper from the teacher.
(Leo, you're amazing.)
But as I was thinking that—
Leo, Chapter 3:
(Leo, you're amazing.)
I watched Leo with quiet awe as he received the top grade in the class.
Female Student 1:Leo, you're so amazing!
Female Student 2:I knew you'd be number one, Leo!
Leo:Thanks.
As Leo walked back to his seat, the girls in the class spoke to him as he passed them.
He smiled at each and every one of them, thanking them all graciously.
As I watched, I felt an odd sense of sadness and loneliness welling up inside.
(Leo... you're kind to everyone in just the same way, aren't you?)
(Wait—why am I feeling like this?)
(I never used to feel this way.)
My heart seemed to be aching, and I clenched my hands into fists in my lap, where no one could see.
***
That day at lunchtime—
I sat down on a bench in the corner of the schoolyard, my thoughts hazy and unfocused.
(I wish I understood why I felt like that.)
I could still remember the pain in my heart, and I sighed softly.
Sebastian:What's wrong, what's wrong?
Jily:Sebastian!
=======
Sebastian:What's wrong, what's wrong?
Jily:Sebastian!
Sebastian came flying down from above, and landed on the back of the bench I was sitting on.
Sebastian:Smile, smile.
Sebastian:Feel better.
(Oh, Sebastian. Is it so obvious that I'm upset?)
Jily:Thank you for cheering me up.
I smiled gently at Sebastian, and he flapped his wings at me.
Sebastian:Talk to me! Anything!
(Wait, I remember those words.)
Leo:If you have any problems, you can talk to me about anything.
(Leo said exactly the same thing to me the first day we met.)
(Sebastian, you're just as kind as Leo, aren't you?)
The realization made all the feelings I'd been hiding deep inside me well up and spill out into words.
Jily:I don't know why, but it hurts.
Jily:Leo's my friend. So I don't know why I feel this way.
A moment later, I heard the sound of footsteps approaching.
I raised my head with a start.
Leo:There you are.
=======
Leo:There you are.
Jily:Leo!
Leo breathed a sigh of relief at the sight of Sebastian, and then turned to smile at me.
Leo:Can I sit with you?
Jily:Sure.
Leo:Sebastian wasn't where he usually is.
Leo:I started worrying about where he'd gone off to.
Leo sat down on the bench next to me as he explained.
My heart skipped a beat as I realized how close to me he suddenly was.
Leo:Were you teaching him some new words?
Jily:Um, yes.
(Actually, I was telling him how I really feel.)
(But I can't tell you that.)
I opened my mouth to change the subject, but before I could, Sebastian said,
Sebastian:It hurts.
Sebastian:Leo's my friend, it hurts.
Jily:Sebastian!!
My voice squeaked as I turned hastily to look at him.
Sebastian seemed flustered as well, flapping his wings rapidly.
Leo:It hurts?
(You're so popular with everyone, and somehow it hurts to see that.)
(But I can't say that. It doesn't even make sense to me.)
Jily:It's nothing.
Sebastian:It's nothing, it's nothing!
Jily:Um—I haven't finished getting ready for my next class, so I'm gonna head back in now.
I hurriedly turned and stood up from the bench, trying to avoid Leo's gaze.
Leo:Jily, wait.
Before I could walk away, Leo reached out and gently caught me by the arm.
Jily:Oh—
I turned back towards Leo in surprise.
=======
I turned back towards Leo in surprise.
(Oh!)
Leo was even closer than I'd realized, studying me with a serious expression.
My heart began to race, and for a moment I didn't know what to say.
Leo:When you say 'it hurts,' are you feeling unwell?
Jily:Um, I—
(What should I say?)
Leo brushed my hair gently back from my forehead.
Leo:Hold still.
He leaned forward and pressed his forehead against mine.
Jily:Leo—!
I could feel myself blushing all over, my skin hot and red.
Leo:Hmm, you do feel a bit warm. You might have a fever.
(It's not a fever, it's because of you!)
Jily:I don't have a fever.
I spoke the words softly, almost too quiet to hear.
Leo pulled back from me again, studying my face.
Leo:Are you sure? I can't help but be a bit worried.
Leo:I mean, you're very important to me.
(What? I am?)
My tummy did that wild somersaulting thing again.
But before I could say anything, the bell chimed, signaling the end of lunch.
Leo:Ahh, our next class is about to start. We should head back.
Jily:Okay.
(Important, huh?)
I hurried after Leo towards the classroom, wishing I could've asked him what he'd meant.
***
After school that day—
=======
After school that day—
(I was so busy thinking, I didn't realize how late it was.)
The sun was setting as I crossed the schoolyard.
(But I still don't know what Leo meant by:very important.)
(And I couldn't really look him in the face after that.)
I couldn't get his words out of my head as I hurried towards the gates.
Leo:Jily?
Suddenly I heard his voice speak my name, and my heart skipped a beat.
Jily:Is something the matter?
I turned in surprise to find Leo standing behind me.
He looked worried as he said,
Leo:Actually, I can't find Sebastian. Have you seen him?
(Sebastian is missing?)
Jily:No, I haven't.
Leo:I looked all around the dorm, and all the places he usually goes, but he's nowhere to be found.
(And it's a secret that you let him free like that, so you can't ask your friends.)
(It must be hard for you, trying to search for him all by yourself.)
Jily:Let me help you look for him.
Leo:Sorry—I know you were on your way home. But thanks, I'd appreciate that.
***
We decided to split up and search for Sebastian in all the most likely places.
There was a forest near the school grounds, so I went there to look around.
(Sebastian, where on earth are you?)
I looked around as I walked, but suddenly something made me stop.
(Hang on—I feel like I just came through here a few minutes ago.)
I took a closer look around, and realized that everything looked familiar, and everything looked the same.
A chill ran down my spine as I realized I wasn't sure which direction I'd come from, either.
(Oh no. Did I go and get myself lost?)

Leo, Chapter 4-Sweet Ending:
(Oh no. Did I go and get myself lost?)
(Now what am I gonna do?)
I tried to tell myself to be calm, but I couldn't stop the panic rising up inside.
Then for some reason a memory of Leo flashed through my mind.
〝Leo:Actually, I can't find Sebastian. Have you seen him?〞
(I'm sure Leo is really worried about Sebastian right now.)
(I don't have time to panic, right? I just need to calm down and think things through.)
I forced myself to think positive, and began to walk forward again.
(Hang on—I know that sound!)
I heard the familiar sound of wings flapping overhead, and I looked up with a start.
I spotted Sebastian flying through the treetops far above me.
Jily:Oh! Sebast—
But before I could finish calling his name, he'd flown out of sight.
Jily:Aww, he didn't hear me.
My quiet, disappointed voice echoed in the otherwise still forest.
***
Before long, the light started to fade and the forest began to grow dark around me.
=======
Before long, the light started to fade and the forest began to grow dark around me.
I was walking in the direction I'd seen Sebastian heading, but I still couldn't find him.
(And I still have no idea how to get out of the forest again, either.)
I was just starting to feel completely discouraged, when—
Leo:Jily!
(Leo?!)
I could distantly hear the sound of Leo's voice calling my name from somewhere.
Jily:Leo!!
I stood there in the middle of the forest yelling with all my strength until at last I heard footsteps, and Leo appeared.
Leo:Thank goodness! There you are!
Jily:I'm so sorry, Leo. I was trying to find Sebastian, and somehow I got lost, and—
Just the sight of Leo was enough to wipe away all the worry and panic that I'd been feeling.
(I had no idea I'd feel so relieved just to see you.)
Leo:I'm sorry I took so long.
Leo:You didn't get hurt or anything, did you?
Leo hurried towards me, studying my expression with concern.
There was a gentleness in his gaze, and I quickly shook my head.
Jily:No, I'm fine.
(I'm so glad you came for me!)
Before I even realized what I was doing, I reached out towards Leo.
=======
Before I even realized what I was doing, I reached out towards Leo and wrapped my arms around his neck, clinging to him.
Jily:Leo—
I heard him catch his breath in surprise as I leaned against him.
But a moment later he smiled gently.
Leo:You're okay now, really.
He wrapped his arms around me, stroking my back reassuringly.
(I was so scared. I was really starting to lose hope.)
I stood there and let Leo stroke my back for a while, until I was finally starting to feel calm again.
At last I realized something, and I looked up at Leo.
(Now that I've stopped to think about it—)
Jily:How did you know where I was?
Leo looked down at me with a cheerful smile.
Leo:Sebastian told me.
Jily:Sebastian? Really?
Leo:A little while after you went into the forest,
Leo:I found Sebastian in one of the places I'd been searching earlier.
Leo:I wanted to let you know that he was okay, but—
Leo:I didn't have any idea where you might be.
Leo:So Sebastian and I came looking for you together.
(So when I saw Sebastian flying overhead—)
I remembered the sound of Sebastian's wings, and how quickly he'd flown away.
(He must've seen me, and hurried off to let Leo know.)
Jily:Thank you, Leo.
Leo:No, thank you for helping me.
(I'm so glad you found Sebastian!)
I breathed a soft sigh of relief and smiled up at Leo.
Leo:So that's all settled, then.
Leo:And now... I'm probably going to regret this, but you seem to have calmed down, and—
Leo:We can't stay like this forever.
Jily:What?
=======
Leo:And now... I'm probably going to regret this, but you seem to have calmed down, and—
Leo:We can't stay like this forever.
Jily:What?
My eyes widened at Leo's words, and he gave me a wry smile.
Leo:I know we're friends and all, but this may be too much for me.
I realized then that at some point he'd stopped stroking my back, and was just holding me.
His arms tightened a little around me, and I caught my breath.
(I didn't realize—I just threw my arms around you.)
I blushed helplessly as I realized just how close our bodies were.
Yet I couldn't quite bring myself to let go.
(I don't want to let go of you, Leo.)
The idea filled me with a sense of sadness and longing, and I clung to him even tighter.
Leo studied me with amusement in his eyes, but his voice was gentle as he said,
Leo:Jily, if you keep clinging to me like that,
Leo:I'm going to end up kissing you.
The softly murmured words seemed to echo deep in my heart, and I—
=======
Leo:Jily, if you keep clinging to me like that,
Leo:I'm going to end up kissing you.
The softly murmured words seemed to echo deep in my heart, and I found myself saying,
Jily:I don't mind.
Leo:What?
Leo stared down at me with wide, disbelieving eyes.
But all the moments I'd shared with him were running through my mind.
〝Leo:If you have any problems, you can talk to me about anything.〞
〝Leo:In that case then, here you go. You can read it.〞
〝Leo:Then it's a secret, just between you and me.〞
(I always have fun when I'm with you, Leo. But it's not just that.
(You're so kind and sweet, in so many ways.
(And sometimes when I think about you, it hurts, and I get all gloomy.)
I looked up at Leo, meeting his startled gaze directly.
(But now I finally understand why.
(It's because of how I feel about you.)
Jily:I mean, I like you, Leo.
I stared into his eyes as I spoke the words.
His expression turned startled, and then he gave a oddly shy laugh.
Leo:I didn't think you'd be the one to say it first.
Jily:What?
Leo's expression turned serious again as he said,
Leo:I told you that you're very important to me, didn't I?
〝Leo:I can't help but be a bit worried.〞
〝Leo:I mean, you're very important to me.〞
(Are you telling me that when you said that—)
Hopeful anticipation welled up inside me, and then Leo reached up and cupped my cheek with his hand.
Leo:When I'm with you, it's strange, but—I feel able to relax.
Leo:Jily, I really like you.
Leo:Probably just as much as you like me.
My stomach fluttered wildly with excitement as his lips captured mine in a gentle kiss.
(I never imagined you might feel the same way I do.)
(And I never imagined I'd feel so happy that we both feel the same.)
I smiled up at Leo as I envisioned all the wonderful times yet to come that we'd share together at the academy...

Leo, Chapter 4-Premium Ending:
=======
After we'd been walking for a while—
Leo:Did you just hear the sound of wings flapping?
I stopped and strained to listen, and he was right—I could faintly hear wings flapping in the distance.
Jily:Yes! That way, I think.
We turned and began to hurry in the direction of the sound.
Leo:Found you at last.
Sebastian:Found me? Found me?
Sebastian was sitting on a tree branch, busily eating the fruits hanging from it, but he turned at our approach.
Jily:You were so focused on eating those you forgot to come home, didn't you?
Sebastian:Forgot! These are yummy!
Sebastian sounded so innocent and happy, and Leo gave a long sigh.
Leo:Really, you know how to cause a heck of a fuss.
But in spite of his words, Leo looked more than a little relieved.
(You were really worried, weren't you?)
(I'm so glad we found Sebastian safe and sound.)
Sebastian:Going home, going home, bye-bye!
Sebastian sat back for a moment, looking very satisfied with himself.
Then he flapped his wings and took off into the air.
Jily:Sebastian! Wait!
Without even thinking I began to hurry after him.
(Oh!)
Leo reached out and caught hold of my hand, stopping me.
=======
Leo reached out and caught hold of my hand, stopping me.
Leo:He looks like he's headed back to the dorm. He'll be fine.
Leo:He really is thoughtless, isn't he? Oh well, I'm glad nothing happened to him.
Leo smiled brightly at me, and then linked his fingers with mine.
Leo:Why don't we head back at a more leisurely pace?
Jily:Okay.
His hand was warm against mine, and my heart began to race.
(You always seem to get my heart going.)
(I wish I knew why.)
As we walked slowly back through the forest, I tried to distract myself from my pounding heart.
Jily:I'm glad we found Sebastian.
Leo:Me too. It's all because you offered to help.
Jily:No it's not! I mean, I was trying to help, but I just ended up worrying you instead. I'm sorry.
I gave Leo a rueful smile, but he only laughed cheerfully.
Leo:Not at all. I mean it—thanks for helping me look.
His sweet smile filled my heart with warmth.
(I'm glad to think I was able to help you.)
(Seeing you smile always makes me feel happy.)
Jily:Well, I'm your friend. It's only natural that I want to help you.
As I said the words aloud—
=======
Jily:Well, I'm your friend. It's only natural that I want to help you.
As soon as I said the words aloud, an odd, lonely ache settled in my heart.
(Why on earth do I feel this way?
(Why am I so upset over something I said?)
It was a small ache, buried deep down inside.
But the more I thought about Leo, the bigger it seemed to become.
(We're friends. At least, that's what I thought. But—)
I felt lost for words, unable to piece my thoughts together, and then Leo gave me a troubled smile.
Leo:Ahh, I didn't expect those words to come as such a shock.
Jily:What?
I looked up at Leo in surprise, and he frowned a little, his voice turning serious.
Leo:The truth is, I felt that way too, at the start. I was happy to have made such a sweet friend.
Leo:But Jily—I'm not sure we can be friends anymore.
Jily:What's that suppose to mean?
Leo stopped walking and turned to face me, his gaze serious.
Leo:Will you be my girlfriend?
=======
Leo:Will you be my girlfriend?
(Wait, what?!)
My heart began to race at the unexpected words.
Leo:All the things you do, like helping me search for Sebastian like this,
Leo:and being able to tell me to my face that I'm kind—
Leo:Somehow, somewhere along the way, everything about you has become so important to me.
(Wait, you said something like that before.)
〝Leo:I mean, you're very important to me.〞
(Even then, you were feeling this way about me, weren't you?)
Leo:I love you, Jily.
His honest words seemed to echo like music in my heart.
(Leo, I—)
Memories of all the times we'd spent together flooded through my mind.
〝Leo:Can you promise me?〞
〝Leo:But he's right, I might be a little jealous.〞
〝Leo:I mean, I'd rather you wanted to talk to me.〞
(The way I've been feeling about you all this time, it's—)
Jily:Me too.
Jily:I mean—Leo, I love you too.
I looked up as I spoke, and a beaming smile spread across Leo's face as he hugged me tightly.
Leo:I hoped, but I didn't really believe you might feel the same way.
Leo:Ahh, I'm so happy, Jily.
All the things I felt for him seemed to fill me up inside, and I stood up on tiptoe, kissing him softly.
(All this time, I thought we were friends.
(But I think all this time what I was feeling was actually love.)
His lips were soft and sweet, and his kisses sent a thrill running through me.
Happiness filled me up inside as we embraced each other in the light of the setting sun...
