Prologue:
This is an unforgettable story of first love.
A story of your first meeting with him at the Royal Wysterian Academy...
I walked slowly down the spacious corridor.
Mr. Branche, one of the teachers, was showing me around the academy.
(I never knew how big the academy was until I saw it like this from inside.)
(If I don't want to get lost in here, I'm going to have to do my best, starting tomorrow!)
I sighed softly to myself, and Mr. Branche glanced back at me with a smile.
Mr. Branche:Are you feeling tired? I did go and introduce you to everyone all at once.
Jily:No, it's not that.
Jily:I was just feeling a little nervous, and wondering how often I'm going to get lost.
It was my dream to be a teacher, so I'd studied constantly, and finally my hard work was paying off.
The following day I would start attending Royal Wysterian Academy as a scholarship student.
Mr. Branche:Well, you're right—the school is huge, I imagine it's overwhelming at first.
Mr. Branche:But you'll be fine. You'll get used to it in no time.
Mr. Branche's voice was kind and reassuring, and it eased my nervousness.
Jily:I guess you're right.
I turned to glance out at the schoolyard, visible from the nearby windows.
Mr. Branche went on, his tone still gentle.
Mr. Branche:I know there's lots of things you won't be used to at first.
Mr. Branche:But you only get to enjoy your time as a student once. I hope each day will be memorable for you.
(I only get to enjoy it once, huh? Well, that's true enough.)
(I want to learn everything I can here at Royal Wysterian Academy, and create lots of wonderful memories!)
My heart fluttered with excitement as I imagine how my life at the school was going to go.
Suddenly Mr. Branche looked away, his gaze moving to someone behind me.
Mr. Branche:Goodness, are you still here?
Curious, I turned to see who he was talking to.
At the time I had no idea that it was the boy I would fall in love with...

Sid, Chapter 1:
Mr. Branche:Goodness, are you still here?
I turned curiously to see who Mr. Branche was talking to, and found a tall young man standing nearby.
???:Had some minor business to deal with.
Mr. Branche:I see. And you still have no intention of showing up for class?
(Huh? What's that supposed to mean?)
(Does that mean he doesn't go to class at all?)
I gazed curiously at the young man as he nodded vaguely and then turned his attention to me.
???:So you're the new scholarship student I heard about, huh?
???:This place is pretty damn huge, so try not to get lost.
Jily:Oh! I'll do my best.
I hadn't expected him to talk to me at all, and my answer was flustered and awkward.
He smiled faintly at me and then turned and walked off in the other direction.
As I watched him leave, I said to Mr. Branche,
Jily:Who was that?
Mr. Branche:That was Sid Grandier. He's a senior, so he's a year above you.
(Sid, huh?)
(He startled me, but he went out of his way to give me some good advice. He seems pretty nice.)
As I continued to stare down the corridor, I remembered what Mr. Branche had said to him.
(Now that I think about it—)
Jily:Um, when you asked him about showing up to class, what was that all about?
Mr. Branche:Ahh, yes.
Mr. Branche's expression darkened a little at my words, and he sighed softly.
=======
Mr. Branche sighed softly, and spoke in a quieter voice.
Mr. Branche:Yes, there are certain reasons for that.
I waited for him to continue, but he didn't say anything more.
The smile on his face had an edge of sadness to it.
(The way Sid spoke was a little rough, but he didn't seem like a bad person.)
(I wonder what happened?)
I couldn't help but be curious about it, but Mr. Branche's expression stopped me from asking anything more.
Still, I found myself wondering about it for the rest of the day.
***
After that I said goodbye to Mr. Branche, and headed across the schoolyard to go home.
But as I was walking, I spotted the dormitory building.
(Oh, that reminds me—)
〝Mr. Branche:You won't be living in the dorms, but if you're interested feel free to take a tour anytime.〞
〝Mr. Branche:There's a resident teacher there in the evenings, and if you ask they'll be happy to show you around.〞
(It's late enough now that they might be able to give me a tour.)
(I'd like to take a look and see what it's like in there.)
Like the main school building, the exterior of the dorms looked elegant and stately.
It made me a little nervous, but I pushed that away as I headed towards the dorms.
=======
I stepped into the dorm entrance hall, and looked around as I called out.
Jily:Excuse me! I'd like to get a tour of the dorms!
But the inside of the building was silence, and no answer came echoing back.
(I guess no one's here?)
I frowned a little, looking around again.
Then I noticed faint light and the sound of voices coming from a room further in the back.
(Oh good, it looks like someone's here.)
(It might not be the resident teacher, but whoever it is, I'm sure they can help.)
I nodded to myself, and started walking towards the room, when—
Jily:Oh!
Suddenly someone grabbed my arm roughly from behind, and I turned in surprise.
Sid was standing there, his expression grim.
Sid:What on earth are you doing in—
Before he could finish speaking, I heard the squeak of a door opening, and the distant voices grew louder.
Sid glanced in the direction of the door, and made a disgruntled noise in his throat as he began to drag me away.
Jily:Wait a minute, what are you—
Sid:In here.
Before I could react, Sid dragged me into a nearby room and shut the door.
(What on earth is going on?)
Jily:What do you think you're doing?
I scowled up at him, but then I heard the sound of footsteps in the hall outside.
Sid pushed me back against the wall, his arms wrapping around me.
His expression was so serious that I realized something was wrong, and I fell silent.
His face moved towards mine, his eyes gleaming in the dimness of the room.
Sid:Can you keep quiet?
His face was almost too close, his breath tickling my cheek as he spoke.
=======
Sid wrapped his arms tighter around me, gently pressing my face against his chest.
I closed my eyes, listening for the sound of footsteps in the hall outside.
But somehow the sound of Sid's pounding heart was all that seemed to matter.
I could smell the warm, earthy scent of him, could feel the strength of his muscles holding me.
Excitement flared up inside me, and I didn't understand why.
Without thinking, I reached out to wrap my arms around him in return, when—
Sid:Are they gone?
Sid pulled back from me, glancing towards the door, and I froze.
I realized then that I'd been about to embrace him, and I yanked back in confusion.
Jily:What on earth was that all about?!
My voice cracked as I spoke, and Sid frowned, looking back towards me.
Sid:This is the boys' dorm. Girls ain't meant to be in here. You'd have been in big trouble if the teacher found you.
(Well okay, you might be right about that, but—)
Jily:You didn't need to hold me so tightly!
Sid:I was just trying to keep you calm. And outta sight.
Sid looked down at me and then smirked suddenly.
Sid:Don't worry, you've got no sex appeal, I ain't interested in ya.
(How rude!)
My gaze shot up to meet his, full of sudden anger.
Sid smirked down at me again, leaning closer.
=======
Sid smirked down at me again, leaning closer.
His breath warmed my cheek as we stared at each other.
(Oh!)
My heart began to pound again, and I remembered what it had felt like to be in his arms.
He spoke softly, his tone opening teasing.
Sid:Yeah, you're not my type.
Sid:But if you want, I'll give ya a kiss.
(How could you say something like that, even as a joke?)
Jily:I'm fine, thank you very much!
I snapped the words out as I turned and hurried out of the room.
***
After school the next day—
I'd finished my first day of classes, and I was sweeping up the schoolyard with my classmate Leo.
I was using a rake to gather all the leaves into a pile.
But I kept thinking about what had happened with Sid the day before, and I found myself sighing softly.
(Ahh, why do I keep thinking about it?)
〝Jily:What do you think you're doing?〞
〝Jily:What on earth was that all about?!〞
〝Sid:I was just trying to keep you calm. And outta sight.〞
〝Sid:Don't worry, you've got no sex appeal, I ain't interested in ya.〞
(He was awful to me! Why can't I just forget about it?!)
I sighed again, and then I heard Leo laughing gently from just nearby.
Leo:Listen to you sigh. Is something already bothering you on your first day at school?
Jily:No, it's nothing. I'm fine.
(I'm sure I'll never have to talk to Sid again. I'd rather just forget the whole thing.)
Determined to put it behind me, I smiled at Leo and decided to change the subject.
But then a young man with purple hair approached us and interrupted.
???:Leo, do you have a moment?
Leo:Huh? What's wrong, Giles?
Giles frowned a little, his voice somewhat flustered as he said,
Giles:We have a small problem.
Sid, Chapter 2:
Giles:We have a small problem.
As Giles was speaking, his gaze moved towards me.
Giles:You're... the new scholarship student, right? Jily, wasn't it?
Giles:My name is Giles Christophe. I'm the senior class president.
Giles bowed politely to me as he made his introduction.
I hastily curtseyed in response, smiling up at him.
(Class president... I remember Leo saying he's the junior class president.
(I guess this must be something important, then.)
I didn't want to get in the way of their duties, so I turned to Leo and said,
Jily:I can finish up the rest of the raking, so don't worry. You go ahead.
Leo:Jily—sorry about this, but thanks. That really helps.
Jily:Not a problem.
Leo gave me an apologetic smile, and I smiled reassuringly back at him.
I watched as they both hurried away, and then went back to my raking.
***
The next morning—
Mr. Branche stepped into the classroom just as the bell chimed.
He was frowning, his expression unusually serious.
(I wonder what happened?)
The other students began to whisper among themselves as they saw him.
After a moment he opened his mouth and said,
Mr. Branche:The dormitory student register is currently missing.
=======
Mr. Branche:The dormitory student register is currently missing.
The whispering around me grew louder and more harried in response to Mr. Branche's announcement.
Jily:Student register?
I didn't understand what was going on, and I looked around in confusion until Leo leaned closer to explain.
Leo:It's a record of all the students living in the dormitories.
Leo:It has lots of information recorded in it, like which student is in which room,
Leo:as well as our names, what year and class we're in, and even our home addresses.
As I listened to Leo's explanation, I realized the gravity of what was going on.
Leo:The student council created the register for roll-call checks and to help keep track of the dorm students.
Jily:It sounds like something really important.
Leo:Yes, it is. There'd be real trouble if the information in it got leaked outside the school,
Leo:so the student council has always taken good care of it.
Leo stopped there, his expression bitter, and I caught my breath.
Jily:So when Giles came to talk to you yesterday—
I remembered what had happened in the schoolyard, and Leo nodded.
Leo:It seems to have gone missing from the class president's room after school yesterday.
As Leo finished speaking, the bell chimed again.
Mr. Branche:If any of you knows anything, please report it to a class president immediately.
And with that, Mr. Branche turned and walked out of the classroom again.
Jily:If I hear anything I'll let you know right away.
Leo:Thank you, Jily.
***
Later that day I passed by the school gates on my way home.
As I did so, I saw Sid and Giles talking quietly in a spot quite a distance away from the other students.
(I don't know why, but they look like they're really paying close attention to who's near them.)
I couldn't help but stare at their strange behavior as I passed.
Then suddenly my gaze met Sid's.
(Oh!)
=======
(Oh!)
Sid called out to me, his voice carrying clear across the schoolyard.
Sid:Hey there, scholarship student.
A smirk crossed his face as he walked towards me.
(Ahh, and here I thought I'd never have to talk to you again.)
I couldn't help but feel nervous as I remembered what had happened the day we first met.
Giles followed after Sid, speaking quietly as he did so.
Giles:If you hear anything else about the register, please let me know.
Sid:I will.
Giles inclined his head politely in my direction, and then walked away.
(The register?)
I looked up at Sid in surprise as I realized what they'd been talking about.
(I don't really want to talk to you again.)
(But Leo seemed really worried. If you know something—)
Jily:Excuse me, Sid, if you have a moment—
I made up my mind and started to speak, but Sid frowned almost at once.
Sid:You don't need to be so stiff and formal with me.
Jily:Are you sure?
(You're a year above me—it only seems right to be polite. But if you don't want me to...)
Sid shrugged in response to my question, so I nodded hesitantly.
Jily:Okay then.
Jily:I was just wondering something.
Sid raised an eyebrow curiously, and I took that as a good sign to continue.
Jily:Giles just said something to you about the register?
Sid:Oh, that.
Sid nodded in understanding, and went on to say,
Sid:I'm sure you heard about the school register by now.
Sid:Officially they said it's gone missing, but actually it was stolen.
(Seriously?!)
Sid:So I was gathering info about that, and I gave it to Giles.
My eyes widened in surprise at the unexpected explanation.
(I never imagined that someone might have stolen the register.)
(But you're not on the student council, are you?)
(Why are you helping them look for it?)
Jily:Why would you do that?
Sid's expression tightened in annoyance as he answered.
Sid:I give them information they need, and in exchange for that I don't have to go to class.
(Wait a minute—)
Mr. Branche:And you still have no intention of showing up for class?
(At the time Mr. Branche told me there were:certain reasons.)
(You really don't want to go to class, do you? What on earth happened?)
I gazed up at Sid, and he frowned a little in response.
Sid:What's with the long face? If you're feeling sorry for me, you're mistaking things.
Jily:It's not that. I just—
Jily:I was wondering why you don't want to go to class.
I said softly, and the corner of Sid's lips lifted in a smirk.
Sid:Really.
He reached out and slid a finger under my chin, lifting my face towards him.
=======
Sid:Really.
Sid smirked with amusement, lifting my chin towards him.
Suddenly our faces were much closer than they had been, and I blushed.
Sid:Are you interested in me or somethin'?
Jily:Definitely not!
I frowned in response to his teasing tone, trying to make my blush go away.
(I know you're just teasing me and having fun.)
(And it probably means nothing to you, but—)
I looked him directly in the eye, and said what I was thinking.
Jily:It's just that learning in a classroom isn't just about studying.
Sid's eyes widened in surprise at my words.
A moment later, his hand fell away from my chin.
Jily:Sid?
I blinked up at him curiously, and when he spoke again his voice was softer.
Sid:Go on.
Jily:Okay. When I'm in the classroom I have casual conversations with my friends,
Jily and there are so many other things that happen during a lesson, and I think they're all wonderful memories.
Jily:So it just feels to me that not going to class is a real waste.
I studied Sid's expression as I spoke, wondering what he thought.
When I was finished he began to laugh.
Sid:You're an interesting girl.
Sid:Strangely, when you say it like that, it does kinda feel like a waste.
His voice was soft, and then he smiled gently.
Sid:Well, if I feel like it, maybe.
I caught my breath in surprise as I stared at him.
The gentle smile was so different from his usual brash expression, and it set my heart pounding.
(I had no idea you could smile like that.)
Sid:Go on, get yourself home before it gets dark.
And with those final words, Sid walked away without looking back.
(Maybe... maybe you're not such a bad person after all.)
(But I wonder what the real reason is for why you don't want to go to class?)
I watched his tall form as he strode off into the distance.
For some reason, I felt an odd ache in my heart as he disappeared from sight.
***
Several days later—
=======
Several days later—
The fact that the register had been stolen was being whispered about all through the school.
The story had even reached my class, and I spoke softly with Leo.
Leo:We didn't want to freak everyone out, so we didn't tell them that it was stolen. I don't know how it got out.
Leo looked confused and unsure as he spoke.
A moment later I overheard one of my classmates whispering to someone else.
Male Student 1:Sid Grandier's the one who stole it, right?
(Wait, what?!)
Male Student 2:I mean, there's that rumor about him getting someone expelled before, right? I bet it's him!
Leo sighed softly, and I realized he must have overheard the same thing.
Leo:We really need to find the thief before any more ridiculous rumors start spreading.
Jily:I agree.
(I can't believe they'd suspect Sid, when he's only trying to find out what really happened.)
I looked around the room at my whispering, worried classmates,
and I couldn't shake the gloom that seemed to be hovering over me.
***
During lunchtime, I wandered around the school looking for Sid.
(I know Sid didn't do it.)
Sid:This place is pretty damn huge, so try not to get lost.
Sid:Strangely, when you say it like that, it does kinda feel like a waste.
I didn't have any proof, of course, but when I thought about all my interactions with him,
I just knew in my heart that he wasn't the thief.
(But people are suspecting him, so I need to tell him to be careful.)
I began to hurry, knowing I didn't have much time before the bell.
Soon I made my way into a garden that I hadn't visited before.
(Oh!)
Sid, Chapter 3:
I made my way into a garden that I hadn't visited before.
(Oh!)
To my surprise, I saw Sid lying on a bench, his eyes closed, his expression relaxed.
(What on earth are you doing here?)
I crept closer, and sure enough, he looked sound asleep.
(I don't know why, but I can't seem to take my eyes off you.)
I thought about his usual brash expression, and the gentle smile I'd seen a few days earlier.
His quiet, somehow mature expression while sleeping was different again, and it set my heart pounding.
(Why do you make me feel this way?)
I frowned in confusion at my own reactions as I studied his face.
Sid:What are you staring at?
(Ahhh!)
Sid spoke so suddenly that I almost jumped a mile.
He smirked with amusement as he sat up.
Sid:Staring at people while they're sleeping ain't very nice.
(Were you awake the whole time?!)
Jily:If you're awake then say so at the start!
He was watching me carefully, and I felt mortified that he'd caught me staring.
My cheeks flushed bright red, and I frowned a little.
Sid:Did you want something with me?
(That's right, you startled me so much I forgot! I need to talk to you.)
Jily:There's a rumor going around that you're the one who stole the register.
Sid:Yep. Did you come to find out if it's true or not?
There was amusement in his voice, but I shook my head firmly.
Jily:No, I didn't. I just came to tell you to be careful.
Sid:What?
Jily:You're looking for the thief so you can let Giles know what really happened, right?
Jily:I was worried that you asking around might make people suspect you even more, so I just wanted to warn you.
Sid studied me for a moment, and then he burst out laughing.
Sid:You're a strange one.
Sid:What would you do if I really was the thief?
(What a question.)
In spite of his smile, he was studying me carefully, and I met his gaze directly.
=======
Sid:What would you do if I really was the thief?
(What a question.)
In spite of his smile, he was studying me carefully, and I met his gaze directly.
Jily:I believe you didn't do it.
Jily:It's strange but... I just know that you're not the one who did this.
I spoke firmly, and Sid's eyes widened with surprise for just a moment.
Then to my surprise his expression relaxed.
Sid:You really are an interesting girl.
He laughed again, but his expression was that gentle smile he'd shown me once before.
Sid:Then I accept your warning, with thanks.
(Thank goodness.)
As I breathed a sigh of relief, I heard the bell chime to signal the end of lunch.
(Ahh, we need to get back!)
Jily:Sid, it's...
I started to turn back towards the school, but then I realized that Sid wasn't moving.
(You really don't go to classes at all, do you?)
(Last time we spoke you said:If I feel like it, but—)
Jily:You're really not going?
Sid looked up at my question.
=======
Jily:You're really not going?
Sid looked up at my question, and then sighed softly.
Sid:I'm not trying to make fun of your opinion or anything.
Sid:It's just that if I go, everyone will focus on me.
(What?)
It wasn't the answer I'd imagined, and my eyes widened in surprise.
Jily:What do you mean?
I asked without thinking, and Sid responded in a detached tone of voice.
Sid:Once, there was a student who was doing bad things down in town.
Sid:At one point I gave info about him to the school board.
Sid:In the end he dropped out of school, but the rumor ended up being that I got him expelled.
(Wait a minute—)
〝Male Student 2:I mean, there's that rumor about him getting someone expelled before, right? I bet it's him!〞
I remembered the things my classmates had been whispering about.
Sid smirked suddenly and then continued.
Sid:So when I'm in a classroom, the whole vibe is off.
Sid:I can't expect to have a normal lesson when it's like that. No one in the room can.
It felt strange to finally find out the truth about something I'd been wondering about for so long.
Yet my heart ached when I considered how Sid must feel.
(So the real reason you're not going to class—
(It's for the sake of your classmates.)
At that moment, another bell chimed, signaling the start of class.
=======
The bell chimed, signaling the start of class, and Sid spoke brusquely.
Sid:You're a scholarship student. Be a good girl and get to class.
(I know you're right, and I really should get back. But—)
I sat down next to Sid on the bench.
Sid:Huh? What're you doing?
Sid blinked at me in confusion, and I tried to put my nebulous feelings into words.
Jily:You can still make good memories, even if you're not in class.
Jily:So I'm helping you make memories.
Sid laughed in amusement as I looked up at him.
Sid:You're a silly girl.
His voice was deep, yet bright with laughter,
and he reached out and ruffled my hair gently.
Sid:Make sure you go to your next class, then.
His actions were rough and yet somehow kind, and a sweet ache filled my heart.
(Ahh, my face is all hot. I don't get it.)
I tried my best to push away my feelings of confusion by changing the topic.
I asked Sid to tell me what he'd learned so far about the missing register,
as well as what sort of methods he used to gather information.
Sid:This time it looks like it's gonna take me a while to get the information I need.
Jily:In that case, let me help you.
Jily:I want the register to be found as soon as possible, and I want to prove that you're not the one who stole it.
I looked up at Sid to find him smiling down at me.
=======
I looked up at Sid to find him smiling down at me.
Sid:If that's what ya want.
Jily:It is.
His smile was surprisingly gentle, and I nodded as I smiled back at him.
(I know it's wrong to be cutting class like this.
(But I can't help feeling so happy to be able to talk to you like this, Sid.)
It felt as if my heart was racing the entire time I was talking to Sid, and I didn't know why.
But I stayed there on that bench, chatting happily with him until the bell rang for my next class.
***
After school that day—
Sid had agreed to let me help him find the register.
I hurried towards the school annex, where we'd agreed to meet.
(I know we're just going to be gathering information, but—)
It didn't change how happy I felt, knowing I'd be able to spend time with Sid.
(Ahh, why do I feel like this?)
I tried to ignore my feelings as I hurried down the corridor.
Then I heard a familiar voice from up ahead.
(Hang on—)
I saw Giles, Leo, and Sid standing there, their expressions serious.
They were talking quietly with several of the teachers.
(I wonder what's going on?)
Apprehension rose up inside me as I approached them, and Leo looked up with a start.
Leo:Jily?
There was a grim expression on his face as he spoke my name.
Jily:What's going on?
I glanced around at the group, my gaze stopping on Sid.
The tallest of the male teachers turned towards Sid and spoke quietly.
Male Teacher:We have information that the register is in your room. Please come with us.

Sid, Chapter 4-Sweet Ending:
Male Teacher:We have information that the register is in your room. Please come with us.
(What on earth—?!)
The words left me frozen in shock, unable to move.
Sid's expression was flat and unreadable, and he said nothing.
He followed the teachers as they headed towards the dorm.
(That's not fair!)
Jily:But why Sid?!
I turned helplessly to look at Giles and Leo, who'd stayed behind with me.
Leo frowned as he glanced at me.
Leo:It's just as the teacher said.
Leo:Apparently someone told the teachers that the missing register is in Sid's room.
Leo:So now they're all going to Sid's room to look for it.
Jily:But Sid's not the one who stole it!
My voice cracked with frustration, and Giles said soothingly,
Giles:All we can do now is wait and trust him.
Leo:I agree. There's no way Sid's the one who did it.
(You're both right.)
(I really hope this gets resolved as soon as possible!)
I nodded to the two of them, unable to do anything else but wish and hope.
***
Several days later, after school—
Things had gone on long enough, and I couldn't keep my cool any longer.
I'd asked Giles and Leo to take me to the student council room.
I wanted them to show me where the register was usually kept.
(I know nothing is going to change just by me coming here, but—)
The missing register had been found in Sid's room, just as the mysterious informant had claimed.
Since then, Sid had been suspended.
Giles:I don't think Sid is the one who stole the register.
Giles:But since they found the register in his room—
Giles:Well, he will continue to be treated like the culprit unless we can find a way to disprove it.
(Disprove it?)
I looked up at the two of them with a start.
Jily:So all we need to do is find a way to disprove it?
=======
Jily:So all we need to do is find a way to disprove it?
Leo's eyes widened a little in surprise at my question.
Leo:Well, yes. Do you have an idea?
Jily:I don't have a specific idea, but—
Jily:I feel like we should try to find more information about the time when the register went missing.
Jily:Maybe if we do that we can find proof that Sid is innocent.
Giles:I see. Not a bad idea.
Leo:We'll help too, of course.
Jily:Thank you!
***
(Okay, first I'll ask as many people as I can.)
I hurried out of the annex building to go and start collecting information, but as I did—
Sid:What are you doing here?
(What the—)
Jily:Sid?!
I'd never expected to run into Sid, and my heart began to race with both surprise and happiness.
(Gah, why am I reacting like this?)
I pushed aside my feelings and looked up at Sid as he approached me.
Jily:What about you? What are you doing here?
Sid:I can't get anything done stuck in the dorm. I'm doing what I can to gather info.
Sid:So, what are you doing?
Jily:Well, I was about to go and ask around about the register—
Sid frowned immediately, interrupting me in a low voice.
Sid:You don't need to go that far. If you're not careful you'll lose your scholarship.
(Even if that were to happen, if I had to lie to myself about my feelings—)
I met Sid's gaze directly, my emotions burning strongly inside me.
Jily:Even if it ends up that way, I want to be able to do something to help you.
Jily:After all, Sid, I—
I came back to myself with a start before I could say anything more.
(Gah, what was I about to say?!)
I swallowed the words, my cheeks suddenly burning.
Sid:When you make that face—
I chewed my lip as Sid leaned closer to study my expression.
=======
Sid:When you make that face—
Sid leaned closer to study my expression, and I hastily turned away.
Jily:Anyway, I have to look around some more!
***
Somehow I managed to escape the situation without admitting anything.
I hurried back into the annex building and headed down the corridor.
(I almost told Sid that I like him.)
(All this time, my feelings for him have been getting stronger, and I can't ignore them anymore.)
As I realized that, I found myself thinking back to a conversation I'd had with Sid before.
(Oh! I remember now.)
〝Jily:So what's the most important thing to do when gathering information?〞
〝Sid:There's no particular rules.〞
〝Sid:But I make sure to be suspicious of every piece of info I've gathered, at least at the start.〞
〝Sid:If you report something that's wrong, things get way too complicated.〞
It was something that Sid had told me the day I'd cut class to talk with him.
(Start off being suspicious of the info you've gathered...)
With those words in mind, I headed straight for the student council room.
Once there, I made a certain request of Giles.
Giles:Very well. I'll look into it.
***
Leo:You're amazing, Jily. Who would've thought that this was a fake?
The request I'd made of Giles was simple.
I'd asked him to make a thorough check of the register that had been found in Sid's room.
As a result, they'd discovered discrepancies in the records and had realized it was a fake copy.
Giles:So someone's trying to lay the blame on Sid.
Giles:But where on earth is the original?
(I know that proving this is a fake isn't enough to completely clear Sid's name.)
(But the actual register has to be out there somewhere, and we'll find it.)
I left the two of them in the student council room and headed out again.
***
=======
I left Giles and Leo in the student council room to sort things out.
I began looking for the register in classrooms that weren't being used anymore.
(It's getting dark outside, and it's a bit creepy being in here. But I don't want to give up yet.)
I walked around the room, searching through the desks one by one.
As I looked around again, I noticed that something was attached to the bottom of one of the desks.
Jily:This is the register!
I pulled it out in shock, amazed to be holding the actual register in my hands.
I couldn't help but gasp aloud in surprise, and a moment later I heard the door open.
I turned in alarm, worried who else might be in here.
Sid:Geez. It ain't safe for you to be hanging around here at this hour.
Jily:Sid!
I stared at him in disbelief, and he gave an overloud sigh.
Sid:Well, I was right to come looking for ya.
Jily:What are you talking about?
Sid:I heard from Leo and Giles that the register they found was a fake.
Sid:And I figured you'd probably be wandering around, looking for the real one.
(And you came looking for me?)
Jily:Then I'm sorry for worrying you.
Sid:You should be. But you found it, didn't you?
Sid looked down at the register in my hand, smiling suddenly.
Jily:I did.
I smiled brightly back at him, and he reached out and placed his hand on my head.
Sid:You really are something.
He ruffled my hair, the gesture both rough and gentle all at once.
His hand felt warm against my head, and I caught my breath.
My heart was filled to overflowing with my growing feelings for him.
(I don't know if you'll do anything but laugh if I tell you.)
(But even so, when this is all over, I want you to know how I feel.)
I felt as if my heart might burst otherwise, and so I made up my mind.
***
The next day—
Jily:I'm so glad we sorted out that misunderstanding.
I was sitting on the bench with Sid, and I smiled up at him as I spoke.
Sid:Yeah.
We'd taken the real register to the teachers immediately and explained where we'd found it.
The freshman class president had come forward and admitted she'd been borrowing it out of curiosity, and had then been too scared to own up.
Jily:She was so apologetic. I guess it must've been tough for her, too.
Even though she'd tried to take advantage of the rumors and lay the blame on Sid,
she'd really seemed to regret what she'd done, and in the end I felt sorry for her.
(So everything's been sorted out at last.)
I breathed a sigh of relief, and then I realized Sid was looking at me with a wicked smile.
Sid:Never mind that. There was something you wanted to tell me?
My heart skipped a beat at his direct question.
(Ahh, I'm super nervous.)
(But this time I'm not gonna run away. I want to tell you.)
Jily:Yeah. I decided I'd tell you when everything was resolved.
Jily:Sid, I—
=======
Jily:Sid, I really like you.
Jily:Back then, I lost my nerve and couldn't say it, but somewhere along the way—
A moment later I found myself in Sid's embrace, cutting off my flustered words.
His arms were warm and reassuring, and my heart began to pound even faster.
Jily:Sid?
Sid:At last you told me the truth.
There was a gentleness to his voice as he tightened his embrace.
Sid:If you hadn't been here, I might not even have cared when they treated me like a criminal.
Sid:But you believed in me, and you were doing everything you could for me, and when I saw you like that—
Sid:It changed how I felt.
(I had no idea you thought of me like that.)
Happiness spread through me, my feelings for Sid filling me up inside.
(I just naturally want to do things to help you when I see you in trouble.)
(Is this what it feels like to fall in love?)
Meeting Sid had allowed me to feel things I'd never felt before in my life.
Sid:I care about you, Jily.
Sid:I hope you're ready for me, 'cause it's too late to change your mind.
Sid:I ain't letting you go.
Jily:I'm ready.
I grinned up at Sid as I spoke, nodding firmly.
The gentle sun shone down on us both as I leaned against him and closed my eyes.

Sid, Chapter 4-Premium Ending:
Male Teacher:We have information that the register is in your room. Please come with us.
(What on earth—?!)
My eyes widened in shock at the accusation, but Sid said bluntly,
Sid:I don't mind going, but there's no point investigating me.
The teachers all gave Sid a cold stare in response to his words.
(It's almost like everyone already thinks Sid is the thief.)
Before I knew what I was doing, I'd pushed in between Sid and the teachers.
Jily:Please, wait!
Sid:What are you doing?
Jily:It doesn't matter whether the register is in Sid's room or not—
Jily:I will prove that Sid isn't the one who stole it.
(If I can do that, everyone will stop doubting you, Sid.)
Jily:So please, can you give me a bit more time?
I bit my lip fretfully as I stared hopefully up at the teachers.
Sid's eyes were wide with surprise, but he said nothing.
At last the teacher who'd spoken to Sid sighed and said,
Male Teacher:Very well. But that doesn't change the fact that you're under suspicion, Sid.
Male Teacher:If the two of you can't show us proof in time, you will be suspended.
Male Teacher:And we will still search your room now, just to be sure.
Sid:Fine.
The teachers took Sid with them and headed for the dorm, and I stood there in silence, watching them leave.
=======
I gave a long sigh as I watched Sid and the teachers walk away.
(That's the first time I've ever spoken to a teacher like that!)
My heart was still pounding with adrenaline and nervousness.
Giles turned to look at me, his expression anxious.
Giles:Do you know who might have put the blame on Sid?
Jily:No, it's not that. I just—
I thought back to the day I'd skipped class to spend time with Sid.
I clearly remembered what he'd told me then.
〝Sid:This time, someone's been letting info leak on purpose.〞
〝Sid:This'll go much faster if we figure out who.〞
Jily:If we can find out where the information is coming from, I just know we can prove that Sid's innocent.
I spoke firmly, and Leo smiled at me.
Leo:That makes sense.
Leo:Ahh, I'm kind of jealous of Sid, having such a reliable girlfriend.
(Wait, what?)
Jily:I'm not his girlfriend!
My cheeks turned bright red, and I couldn't meet his gaze.
(But I want to be with Sid. I want to do what I can to help him.
(And those feelings are just growing stronger and stronger.)
***
Several days later—
The register hadn't been found in Sid's room after all, but the teachers remained suspicious.
I only had one more day left to prove to the teachers that Sid was innocent.
Leo:Well, it's tomorrow.
Leo:Have you found the real thief yet?
I looked up at Leo's worried question.
=======
Leo:Have you found the real thief yet?
I looked up at Leo and shook my head.
Jily:Not yet. But yesterday a senior told me something interesting.
Jily:She said when she was down in town, she heard a student from a different school talking about our school register.
Leo:Really?
Jily:Yeah. And I'm thinking maybe that student might know something.
Jily:So I'm going to go into town today and look around.
As soon as I said that, Leo's expression grew concerned.
Leo:It might be dangerous. Do you want me to go with you?
Jily:It should be fine. I'm just checking things out.
Jily:If I find anything out I'll let you know right away.
Leo:Okay.
I smiled up at Leo, doing my best to reassure him.
***
That afternoon after school—
I was using the information I'd gotten from the senior student,
and searching the town for the student who'd been talking about the register.
(She told me what he looked like and everything, but—)
(I can't find anyone who matches that description!)
I wandered around the town, listening discreetly to people's conversations and asking vague questions of shopkeepers.
I was heading towards another shop when suddenly—
Man:Come here!
Jily:Ahh!
Without warning an angry-looking man grabbed me by the arm and began to drag me forcefully away.
He was trying to pull me into a deserted alley, and I tried desperately to pull free.
Man:You're sticking yer nose in where it's not wanted!
(Stop! Leave me alone!)
I struggled even harder to pull away, but he was too strong. But just as we reached the alley entrance—
???:This ain't no place to be doing that to a woman.
=======
???:This ain't no place to be doing that to a woman.
At the same moment the man's arm was yanked upwards, and suddenly I was free.
(I know that voice!)
I looked up in surprise, my heart pounding with fear.
Sid was standing between me and the man, keeping me hidden behind him.
Jily:But why—
Sid:I was in town looking for info.
He was still holding the other man's arm, and his eyes narrowed as he stared at him.
Sid:But more importantly—you're that guy who used to go to Royal Wysterian.
I peeked around Sid's broad back and realized that the man fit the description of the student I'd been looking for.
Sid:You dropped out 'cause you stole last time. Don't tell me the registry going missing is your handiwork too?
Sid's voice was cold and cruel in a way I'd never heard before.
The man began to laugh, his shoulders shaking with amusement.
Man:And what's wrong with that? This is the least you deserve.
Man:You're horrible. I had to drop out because of you!
(Because of Sid?)
〝Male Student:I mean, there's that rumor about him getting someone expelled before, right? I bet it's him!〞
(So this is what that rumor was all about.)
(But that's just—)
The man was scowling in frustration at Sid, and I spoke without thinking.
Jily:That wasn't Sid's fault!
Man:What?
Jily:Sid's always thinking about those around him. He doesn't even go to class,
Jily:yet he's spent all his time trying to find out the truth for the sake of the academy and everyone in it.
Jily:That's how kind he is. He's not a horrible person at all!
The words burst out of me in an angry rush, and the man caught his breath.
To my surprise, he fell silent, his expression confused.
After a moment, Sid glanced back at me.
Sid:You really are an odd one.
He smiled at me as he spoke, reaching out to ruffle my hair gently.
***
Sid and I took the man with us and headed back to speak to the teachers at the academy.
The young man seemed to regret his actions at last.
He spoke honestly about what he'd done, and returned the register intact.
Jily:I'm so glad we cleared up all their suspicions about you!
I smiled up at Sid with relief as we walked towards the school gate.
Suddenly he stopped walking, and I stopped as well, turning to look at him.
Sid:Sorry for getting you involved.
Jily:That's okay. I got involved because I wanted to.
Sid:Really.
Sid:Even so, don't go doing anything that dangerous again.
(Oh, Sid.)
His gaze was serious as it met mine, and I blushed a little as I nodded.
Jily:I won't. Sorry for worrying you.
Sid:Seriously. I don't wanna watch the girl I'm in love with being hurt like that.
Jily:Wait, what?!
As my eyes widened in surprise, Sid wrapped me in a gentle embrace.
=======
Sid:Seriously. I don't wanna watch the girl I'm in love with being hurt like that.
Jily:Wait, what?!
As my eyes widened in shock, Sid wrapped me in a gentle embrace.
His husky voice murmured softly in my ear.
Sid:I'm a weirdo too, but I think I'm useless without ya.
Sid:Jily, will you be my girl?
I caught my breath, a million thoughts whirling through my mind.
(Oh gosh, now I understand.)
(All this time I've been trying to figure out what it is I'm feeling when I'm with you.)
Surprise and joy filled me up inside, and all my words seemed caught in my throat.
It was all I could do to look up at him and nod, but I knew I was smiling.
A sudden, bright smile crossed his face as well.
Sid:Can I take that expression on your face as answer enough?
Amusement lurked in his voice as he leaned towards me.
A moment later his smirking lips found mine as he kissed me.
My eyes fell shut of their own accord as our lips moved together.
In spite of his usual brashness, his kiss was gentle, and it filled me with warmth.
(All this time—I've been in love with you.)
It was a feeling I'd never felt before in my life, yet now it consumed me whole.
I reached up and wrapped my arms around him as I kissed him back with all my heart.
At last our lips parted, and Sid pressed his forehead against mine.
(Oh!)
I opened my eyes to find his face so close it was almost blurred.
My heart was already racing, yet it skipped a beat and began to pound even faster.
Sid:If that wasn't enough, we can do it again.
There was amusement in his voice and mischief sparkling in his eyes.
I met his gaze, a slow smile creeping across my own lips.
Jily:Let's do it again.
(You told me not to do anything dangerous ever again.)
(But if something were to happen to you again, I'd do it again, and gladly.)
(And I feel that way because I love you.)
Our lips came together for another kiss, deeper this time.
My heart seemed to sing with joy as I closed my eyes...
