Prologue：

The evening was a little chillier than usual, and a soft breeze wound through the courtyard, the flowers shivering in its wake.
I'd finally finished my last lesson of the day with Leo, and I closed the book in front of me with a soft sigh.
Leo "Well done. You really pick this stuff up quickly, Jily—it makes teaching you a breeze!"

（Considering how serious you are about your studies, it's really reassuring to hear you say that.）

Jily "Thanks, I'm glad you think so!"
Leo "You were incredible at that ceremony last week, too.
Leo "And I know that was because you were so diligent with studying and preparing for the big day."
Leo was talking about a ceremony that had been held in a neighboring country, to commemorate the birth of their new prince.
I'd been chosen to give a congratulatory speech on behalf of several surrounding nations, so I'd really felt the pressure.

（But a lot of people helped me prepare for that.）

I grinned, remembering all the meetings, lessons, and hectic speech rewrites, and Leo gave me a rueful grin in return.
Leo "I remember it being pretty rough on you, though.
Leo "What was it Giles said? 'If you don't succeed at your lessons, I'll have to punish you'?"

（Now that you mention it, I'm pretty sure he said that more than once!
（But I was so frazzled at the time I kind of needed it.）

Jily "Well, I was kind of all over the place. I know he only said that to help me focus on what was right in front of me.
Jily "And honestly, that's a big part of why it was such a success in the end. Sometimes I need someone like Giles being strict with me."
Leo "Only because you're so earnest and honest."
Leo's grin relaxed into a more gentle, friendly smile, and I smiled back at him.
He reached into the case of things he'd brought with him, and to my surprise, pulled out a small box tied with a bright pink ribbon.
Leo "And that's why you get a present."
Jily "What? Really?"
Leo "Really. I think you'll like it. Go on, open it."
I took the box curiously and tugged the ribbon undone before opening the lid and peering inside.
Jily "Oh, wow! I love macarons!"
Delicate macarons in a rainbow of colors were lined up neatly inside the box, gleaming almost like pastel gemstones.
Leo "It's a reward for all your hard work, from Giles and myself.
Leo "I heard they're all the rage in town right now. The macarons, I mean. They sell out constantly."
Jily "I know! I've been hoping to try them, too!"
I grinned down at the box of macarons, my heart warmed by the kindness of the two men and their thoughtful gift.
Jily "Leo, thanks. This is really sweet of you both."
I looked up from the box again, and Leo's expression brightened, as if he'd just remembered something.
Leo "You know, I recently heard about something else that's all the rage right now."
Jily "Really? Is it another type of sweet?"
Leo "Nope, it's not food at all.
Leo "I bet you can't guess."
