Prologue:

This is a story of a love that sets both your hearts aflame.
A story of your days together at the Royal Wysterian Academy...

***

(I'd heard the rumors and all, but wow—the campus is so amazing!)

I couldn't help but gawk at my surroundings as I walked down the corridor.
Mr. Branche was walking just ahead of me, but he glanced back and stopped with a bright smile.
Mr. Branche:Did you see something you're interested in?
Jily:Oh! It's not that exactly.
Jily:I'm just a bit surprised by how big the school is.
I blushed a little as I realized how obvious my gawking had been.
But Mr. Branche gave me a kind, reassuring smile.
Mr. Branche:Well, you'll be here every day starting tomorrow. You'll get used to it in no time.
Jily:I hope so!

(I've always wanted to attend this school.
(I still can't believe it's actually happening. It doesn't feel real!)

It was my dream to be a teacher, so I'd studied constantly, and finally my hard work was paying off.
The following day I would start attending the Royal Wysterian Academy as a scholarship student.
But first Mr. Branche was showing me around so that I had a better idea of what the school was like.
Mr. Branche:The school used to only be attended by the children of nobles.
Mr. Branche:So I can understand why you'd be surprised at how extravagant the interior is.
I knew that the school had only recently changed their rules and made it possible for anyone to attend.
I could still remember how excited I'd been when I found that out.
Mr. Branche glanced out the window at the schoolyard outside.
Mr. Branche:I'm sure it may feel overwhelming at first, studying in such a new and different environment.
Mr. Branche:But I hope it will broaden your outlook, and give you lots of enjoyable experiences.
His words filled me with hope and anticipation.

(Tomorrow my new school life starts, right here!)

Jily:I hope so too!
Mr. Branche:Now, let's head to the next location I'd like to show you.
I nodded and moved to follow Mr. Branche down the corridor.
But at that moment the door right next to where I was standing opened suddenly.
Someone stepped out of the room, almost running right into me.

(Oh!)

It was my first fateful meeting with him...

Giles, Chapter 1:

A door right next to me opened, and someone coming through it almost ran into me.

(Oh!)

I pulled back hurriedly, and a dignified voice echoed through the corridor.
???:I'm very sorry. Are you all right?
Jily:Yes!
I looked up at the young man who'd spoken.
He had purple hair and a calm, composed air about him.
???:I don't believe I've seen you here before.
The young man looked over at Mr. Branche, and then back at me.
He nodded in understanding, and gave me a small smile.
???:But since you are with Mr. Branche,
???:I can only assume that you are the new scholarship student, Jily.

(Wait, what?)

Jily:How did you know my name?
???:I am the student body president of the school.
Giles:I'm also the senior class president. My name is Giles Christophe.
Giles smiled brightly at me, bowing politely as he did so.
Jily:Oh! It's nice to meet you.
I hurriedly curtseyed in response.
As I stood up straight again, Mr. Branche explained to me,
Mr. Branche:Class presidents are the students who represent each year.
Mr. Branche:In addition, one of the senior students is chosen as the student body president each year.

(Wow, I had no idea!)

I listened in quiet awe to Mr. Branche's explanation.
Then I realized Giles was looking at me with curiosity on his face.
Giles:But weren't you scheduled to start attending from tomorrow?
Mr. Branche:Yes, but I'm just in the midst of showing her around the school first.
Giles:Ahh, I see.
I nodded eagerly at Mr. Branche's explanation, and went on to say,
Jily:Yes! I wanted to see as many places as possible, so I can get used to the school more quickly when I start.
Giles looked at me again, his expression turning serious as he did so.
Giles:That's certainly very important, but let me just warn you of something.

=======

Giles looked at me again, his expression turning serious as he did so.
Giles:That's certainly very important, but let me just warn you of something.

(Oh?)

Giles:Unless you're foolish I don't think you'll go near it anyway,
Giles:but please avoid entering the room at the very back of the school annex.
Jily:The school annex?

(Now that you mention it, I remember seeing several buildings outside in addition to the main building.)

I thought back to how the campus had looked as I'd walked up to the main building.
Giles smiled again, the seriousness completely gone from his expression.
Giles:If you have any problems with your time here at the school, I'm always happy to assist.
His voice was kind and gentle, and then he turned and walked away.

(He seemed like a really nice guy, but—)

He'd been so dignified, just like a student representative should be, and I felt a little overwhelmed by it.
Jily:But what on earth is in the room at the back of the school annex?
The words slipped out before I'd even thought about it.
Mr. Branche:It's the student council room.
Mr. Branche:No one is allowed in there except for the students chosen to be class presidents.
Mr. Branche:It's because they keep a register in there, with details of all the students staying in the dorms.

(Wow! That certainly sounds like a place I shouldn't just go wandering into!)

I nodded in understanding, and Mr. Branche gave me another kind smile.
Mr. Branche:But it's the sort of place you'd never go unless you had a reason, so I don't think you have to worry.

(Then I should be fine. But I'll keep it in mind, just in case.)

Jily:Okay.
Mr. Branche:Now, let's continue with the tour.
Jily:Yes please!
I followed after Mr. Branche as he turned and walked down the corridor again.
I soon put thoughts of Giles behind me as I tried to remember where everything was.

***

After school the next day—

=======

After school the next day—
I'd completed my very first classes at the Royal Wysterian Academy.
The new friends I'd made all lived in the dorms, so I said goodbye to them and headed home.
As I walked, I thought back to my conversation with Mr. Branche during lunch.

〝Mr. Branche:It looks like you've made several friends already,〞
〝Mr. Branche:and you're certainly very eager about your classwork.〞
〝Mr. Branche:You already seem like a completely regular student of our school.〞

(I was so glad when Mr. Branche said that to me!
(I hope I have a wonderful school life here.)

Happiness and hope for the future filled me up inside, and then I noticed something up ahead.

(Hmm, what are you doing here?)

I stopped in surprise, staring at a park bench under a large tree up ahead.
There was an adorable cat sitting on the bench, grooming itself.

(Are you lost?)

I walked slowly towards the cat, trying not to startle it.

(Oh!)

The cat pounced, grabbed the bow that was tied to my bag, and ran off with it.
Jily:Hey! Wait!
For a moment I stood there dumbfounded, but then I set off at a run after the cat.

=======

***

I ran after the cat until it entered a building set some distance apart from the main school building.
As I walked down the corridor, I heard the sound of it meowing from somewhere down the end.

(What are you doing in here?)

As I approached the cat, it began to scratch at the door at the end of the corridor.
I hesitantly opened the door for it.
It promptly dropped my bow at my feet and slipped into the room.

(Is that what this was all about? You wanted me to open the door?)

I giggled a little to myself as I looked around me.

(Hang on a minute, is this—)

〝Giles:Let me just warn you of something.〞
〝Giles:Please avoid entering the room at the very back of the school annex.〞

(Don't tell me this is that room?)

I caught my breath as I stared at the open door in front of me.

(I mean, this is the annex...)

A cold shiver ran down my spine, and I took a step away from the door.

(Oh!)

Then I heard the sound of distant footsteps walking towards me.

(Oh no! I need to hide!)

I hastily picked up the bow the cat had left at my feet.
Then I darted into the room, pushing the door shut behind me.

(I need to hide somewhere!)

I looked around the room, and then dashed across to the window and hid behind one of the curtains.

(I'll be okay here... right?)

My heart was pounding, and I tried desperately to calm it as I listened to the sound of the door opening.
???:Is someone in here?

=======

???:Is someone in here?

(That voice!)

I peeked out around the curtain and saw Giles in the doorway, looking around the room.

(Aww, no. And you just warned me about this yesterday, too.)

I clenched my hands into fists, silently begging him not to come any closer.

(Oh no!)

But the bow slipped from my fingers, and the curtain swayed around me.
Giles:Who's over there?
Giles's footsteps approached the curtain, and stopped on the other side.
I caught my breath again, my whole body trembling.
Giles pulled the curtain back firmly, and our eyes met.
We stared at each other in silence for a moment.
Giles:You—
Giles continued to stare at me in surprise for a moment.
Then he bent down and picked up the bow, frowning as he did so.
Giles:I'm sure I told you yesterday not to come in here.
Jily:I'm so sorry!
Giles:Will you tell me why you're here, then?
I took the bow he was holding out to me, my fingers still shaking.
But I quickly explained what had happened, and why I'd ended up in the room.
Giles sighed softly, nodding to show his understanding.
Giles:Very well. It's clear that you didn't come in here just out of curiosity.
Giles:Really, Michelangelo, you cause me no end of headaches sometimes.
As he spoke, he turned and addressed the cat curled up in the corner of the room.
Michelangelo's tail swished slightly, but otherwise he ignored us both completely.

(Well, it's true that I didn't come in here to satisfy my curiosity, but—)

Jily:I'm sorry for coming in here without thinking. I should've just waited outside.
I bowed my head apologetically, feeling like an idiot.
A moment later I heard the sound of soft laughter.

(What the—)

I looked up in surprise to find Giles staring down at me.
His face was closer than I'd expected, and my heart skipped a beat.
Giles:I forgive you for coming inside.

(Oh, thank goodness.)

I breathed a sigh of relief, but then Giles spoke again.
Giles:But only on one condition.

926601do9y3g7tff.gif

Giles, Chapter 2:

Giles:But only on one condition.
Jily:What condition?
My eyes widened in surprise at the unexpected words.
Giles turned away from me and walked over to the bookshelf.

(Now I'm a bit worried about what you're going to suggest...)

I watched silently as Giles pulled a large sheaf of documents down from the shelf.
He turned and placed them on the nearby desk.
Giles:Come here, please.
I hesitantly walked over to where he was standing.
The documents seemed to have an awful lot of detailed information written on them.
Jily:What are these?
Giles:This is information left to us by previous class presidents.
Giles:I would like you to help me collate all this data.
He went on to explain that it contained examples of both successful and unsuccessful functions at the school,
but that it was still as disorganized as when the previous class presidents had written it.
Apparently the current class presidents were working to collate it and make sense of it.
Giles:Honestly at this rate, I'd get the cat to help me if he could.

(Well, there certainly are a lot of pages! It looks like it could take forever.)

I picked up the top page, studying the tiny handwriting detailing information about a past event.
Giles:You're a scholarship student, are you not?
Giles:Even the teachers have recognized your talent. Will you help us out?

(I don't know how much help I'll really be, but—)

I still felt guilty about the fact that I'd come into the room when I wasn't supposed to.

(And the more people helping, the faster it'll go, right?)

Jily:All right. I'll help you.
I looked up at Giles with a smile as I spoke.

***

The next morning—

=======

The next morning—
I stepped into my classroom and made my way to my seat.
Leo was already sitting in his usual seat next to mine, and he smiled at me as I sat down.
Leo:Good morning, Jily.
Jily:Good morning, Leo.
Leo:So you're gonna be helping out with collating all that data, huh? Thanks for that.
Jily:What? How did you know?
My eyes widened in surprise as I stared at Leo.
He gave a soft laugh and then went on.
Leo:I'm a class president too, you know. Giles and I were talking about it last night.

(Giles told you already? You must get along pretty well!)

I wasn't used to the idea of students from different years spending much time together.
I studied Leo curiously, wondering if it was a class president thing.

(I guess you two must be good friends?)

Leo smirked suddenly, his expression mischievous.
Leo:You should be careful, though. Giles may look nice but he's pretty strict.
Jily:Thanks, I'll keep that in mind. I'll do my best though.

(Strict, huh? I guess I can imagine him being like that. He's got that vibe.)

I smiled ruefully to myself as I remembered my conversation with Giles the previous afternoon.
A moment later the teacher walked into the classroom, and our class began.

***

After school that day—
Leo and I hurried to the student council room as soon as classes were over.
Several other class presidents and officers were already there, and we sat down to collate the information together.

(I wonder if it's okay like this? I'd like someone to look over it for me.)

I picked up the pages I'd been working on, and stepped over to where Giles was sitting.
Jily:Could you look these over for me?
Giles:Of course.
Giles glanced over the pages I handed him, but almost immediately handed them back to me.

(What the—)

Giles:Please understand. 'Collating' isn't just copying the information out again.
Giles leaned over the pages he'd handed back to me, his expression serious.
He pointed out a section I'd clearly had trouble with and began to explain it to me.

(Wow, I knew it wasn't going to go perfectly right from the start, but still—)

I felt like he was pointing out so many things, and my shoulders slumped in defeat.
But then he stopped, took a breath, and smiled brightly at me.

=======

Giles stopped, took a breath, and smiled brightly at me.
Giles:But you did these parts very well.
Giles:Please try the rest again.
Jily:Okay!

(Oh wow—you DID praise me when I did it well.)

After all the things I'd gotten wrong, I hadn't expected the praise, and I walked back to my seat in confusion.
Leo was sitting next to me, and he leaned over to study the pages in my hand.
Leo:See, he's strict, right?
Jily:Yes, he is.
I gave Leo a small, chagrined smile as I went on.
Jily:But he explained to me the stuff I hadn't understood.
Jily:And he praised the things I got right, so I'm grateful for that.
Leo:Yeah, there's that.
Leo:I'm sure when he's being strict, he's just doing it for the sake of the next generation of the student council.
Leo smirked at me, and I grinned back at me.
Giles:That will be enough chatter, please.
Giles spoke briskly, and I stiffened with embarrassment.
But Leo just shrugged nonchalantly and returned his focus to the documents in front of him.

(That makes sense, though. Giles isn't being strict just because he enjoys being strict.
(He's being strict because he's thinking about what's best for everyone.)

I couldn't help but admire Giles's capacity to think about the bigger picture like that.
It gave me renewed focus, and I turned my attention to the documents in front of me again.

***

After that, I came to find myself helping the student council most days after school.
One particular afternoon—
There were no plans that day to work on collating the data as we'd usually been doing.
But I wanted to get a little more work done, so I was working on it by myself.

(If I could be even a little bit helpful—)

An image of Giles's smiling face appeared in my mind.
My cheeks flushed red as I realized what I was imagining.

(Why am I thinking about Giles now?)

As the days went by, Giles had come to praise me more and criticize me less.
I felt as if we were becoming better friends, and that made me happy.

(But if that's it, then why—
(I mean, I thought I was thinking about being helpful for everyone.)

My thoughts were confusing and I shook my head, not wanting to study them too hard.
I sighed to myself, and turned back to the stack of documents in front of me.
I picked up the first one and began to read it, wanting to distract myself.

(Hang on, this is—)

=======

I picked up the first document in front of me and began to read it.

(Hang on, this is—)

I slowly read the words on the page I was holding.
It was a proposal to change the selection criteria for students attending the Royal Wysterian Academy.
I recognized the handwriting as Giles's, and his signature was also on the bottom.

(Wait a minute, are you telling me this is why anyone can attend Royal Wysterian now?)

As I stared at the page in my hand, I heard the door open behind me.
Giles:Jily?
Giles looked a little surprised as he stepped into the room.
I'd just been picturing him in my mind only a few moments before,
and so the sight of him set my heart pounding, just a little.
Giles:I thought we were taking a break today.
Giles crossed over to where I sat as he spoke.
He leaned over to look at the documents spread out in front of me, and his eyes widened.
Giles:Don't tell me you were tackling all this yourself?
His voice was soft with awe, and I realized my heart was still pounding.
I tried to ignore it as I smiled brightly up at him.
Jily:I was. I know that one person can only do a little,
Jily:but every bit that gets done means it'll be finished that much sooner.
Jily:I agreed to do this work, so I want to do it properly.
I met Giles's gaze directly as I spoke, and after a moment he smiled at me.
Giles:I see.

(Oh hey—I wonder if it's okay to ask you about this proposal?)

I looked down at the document in my hand, and then showed it to Giles.
Jily:Giles—is this something that you suggested?
Giles took the document from me and scanned the contents before nodding.
Giles:Yes. Learning is, by nature, something that should be freely available.
Giles:I don't believe in a school system that refuses to accept people who have the desire to learn.
Giles:It's troubled me since I first entered this school.

(And just by thinking that you got the entire system changed? You're amazing!)

Jily:So that means it's all because of you that I can study here now, isn't it?
Jily:Thank you so much for that.
Happiness filled me up inside, and my words were firm and heartfelt.
I smiled brightly up at Giles.

=======

I smiled brightly up at Giles.
To my surprise, his eyes widened, and his cheeks turned red.

(Giles?)

It wasn't the reaction I'd expected from him.
I found myself blinking up at him in confusion, unsure what to say next.

(I've never seen you look like that before.)

I felt an odd thrill in my tummy as I stared up at him.

(Wait, why am I reacting like that?)

Before I could think too hard about it, Giles glanced up at the clock on the wall.
Giles:It's nothing worth thanking me for.
Giles:More importantly, it's getting quite late.
Giles:How about you leave it there for today?
I turned to look up at the clock as well.

(Oh wow! I need to get home.)

Jily:You're right.

(But I wish I could stay here and talk to you for longer.)

I caught my breath as I realized what I was thinking.

(Why am I like this?)

I could feel myself blushing, and I looked away, trying to hide it somehow.
I hurriedly tried to gather together the documents in front of me, when—
Jily:Oh!
Giles:What's the matter?
Jily:I cut my finger on the paper.
I lifted my index finger, staring at the thin line of blood welling up in the small cut.

(Damn, I need to stop it bleeding.)

Before I could do anything, Giles reached out and took hold of my hand.

(Giles?)

926601do9y3g7tff.gif

Giles, Chapter 3:

(Damn, I need to stop it bleeding.)

Before I could do anything, Giles reached out and took hold of my hand.

(Giles?)

He pressed his lips against the cut on my finger, and my heart began to race wildly.

(Oh wow—)

I knew he was just doing it to stop the bleeding, but that didn't stop me from blushing like crazy.
The roar of my heartbeat was so loud I could barely hear anything else.
Then Giles let go of my hand again.
Giles:Hold still for a moment.
He turned away and retrieved a first aid kit from one of the chests of drawers.
I watched in silence as he pulled a bandage roll out of the kit.
My heart had finally slowed to a normal pace again, and I found myself able to speak.
Jily:It'll be fine, really.
But Giles paid no attention to my words as he took my hand in his again.
He deftly wrapped the bandage around the cut on my finger and tied it off neatly.
Giles:You might end up with a scar if you don't care for it properly.
Giles:Please have respect for your body.
Giles smiled gently at me, and it sent a strange ache through my heart.
Jily:Thank you.
I spoke the words softly, and I could hear my voice wavering a little.
But for some reason, I couldn't quite bring myself to look Giles in the eye again.

***

The next day—

=======

The next day—
We were having a short break between classes, and Leo turned to speak to me.
Leo:Jily, what happened to your finger?
Jily:Oh, it's just a paper cut.
Jily:But Giles happened to be there, so he bandaged it for me.
I touched the bandage on my finger hesitantly.

(Aww man, I can't stop thinking about it.)

I could still clearly remember the feel of his lips, pressed against the cut.
My cheeks felt hot, and I looked away.
Leo laughed, and there was a mischievous edge to it.
Leo:What's the matter? Why are you blushing?
Jily:What? No reason!
I pouted a little, but I couldn't quite meet his gaze, so I stared down at my hands.
When he spoke again, I could hear the teasing in his voice.
Leo:Don't tell me—did Giles do something to you while he was bandaging it?
Jily:Do something?! No!
I looked up with a start, meeting Leo's gaze, and he began to laugh.
Leo:Aww, c'mon, I'm just joking.

(Geez, you're killing me, Leo!)

I tried to calm the racing of my heart, but just as it was starting to settle down again—
Leo:But if that's not why you're blushing, well, all I can think is—
Leo:Do you like Giles?

(What?!)

=======

Leo:Do you like Giles?

(What?!)

I'd already been blushing, but his words made me feel as if my cheeks were on fire.

(Me? And Giles? Wait—)

Jily:No way! As if!
Leo:Really?
Leo's eyes were dancing with amusement, and I scowled at him.
But I couldn't stop thinking about Giles.

(I really feel as if I've been thinking about Giles more and more as time goes by.
(Is this what it feels like to fall for someone?)

The bell sounded to begin class, and I breathed a sigh of relief.

***

After school that day—
We'd all gathered in the student council room to collate data as usual.
We'd been at it for some time, so we were taking a short break.
Leo:Won't be much longer now, huh?
Jily:I guess not.
The pile of documents in front of me was much smaller than it had been when we started.
It seemed likely that we'd get everything finished that day.

(But if we finish it today—does that mean I won't get to see Giles much anymore?)

I sighed to myself, looking over to where Giles was sitting.

(Oh!)

=======

I sighed to myself, looking over to where Giles was sitting.

(Oh!)

Giles was speaking to one of the freshman girls who wasn't very good at collating.
He was enthusiastically explaining things to her.
Giles:So basically what this means is—
Giles:If you change these words like that, it should be much easier to read.
Female Student:Thank you so much!
The girl smiled happily at him, and he smiled brightly at her in return.

(Giles—you're kind to absolutely everyone, aren't you?)

The realization sent an odd ache piercing through my heart.
My feelings made no sense to me at all, and I sighed softly.

(I'm never gonna be able to concentrate like this.
(Well, we're supposed to be taking a break, maybe I should get some fresh air.)

I stood up from my seat and turned away, determined to find a way to lift my mood.

***

Giles had finished giving advice to one of the other students, and he glanced around the room.
He saw Jily sighing softly, her expression gloomy.
A moment later she walked out of the room.
Leo was sitting next to him, watching them both, and he smirked suddenly.
Leo:It's rare for you to be so interested in someone.
Leo:Why not go after her?
Giles:You don't need to tell me. I was going to anyway.
Giles frowned a little at Leo's words, his lips quirking.
Then he stood up and walked out of the student council room.
I stepped out into the gardens, appreciating the breeze as I took a slow walk around.
Suddenly a voice spoke from behind me.
???:Are you feeling tired?

(What?)

I turned in surprise to find Giles walking towards me.
Jily:No, I've just been sitting still for a long time, so I wanted to get some fresh air.
Giles:I see.

(It's strange but—I don't feel capable of looking you in the eye right now.)

I dropped my gaze, and after a moment Giles said,
Giles:Is your cut from yesterday better now?
His words brought to mind a vivid image of his lips against my finger.

(But I'm sure that was just because you were being kind, like you are with everyone. Right?)

Jily:It is. Thank you.
Jily:But when you treat me that nice—
Jily:Well, I'm likely to get the wrong idea.
I felt a pang of loneliness welling up inside me as I spoke.
I still couldn't meet Giles's gaze, but I gave him a vague smile.

(That's right. These feelings are just a mistaken—)

Suddenly Giles took my hand in his, lightly caressing my bandaged finger.

=======

Suddenly Giles took my hand in his, lightly caressing my bandaged finger.
I caught my breath, glancing up at him.
Giles:I wouldn't do that to just anyone.
Jily:What?
His expression was so serious all of a sudden, and it sent a thrill right through me.
Leo:Giles! Jily! We're getting started again.
Leo's voice interrupted us without warning, and I jumped.

(Leo, you have the worst timing!)

Giles:We'll be right there.
Giles let go of my hand, turning away from me.

(You wouldn't do that to just anyone? What's that supposed to mean?)

My heart began to race as I tried to imagine what he might have been about to say next.

***

I returned to the school council room with Giles and Leo.
My feelings were still confused, but I tried to push it away as I continued to work, until at last I was done.
Giles:Today, we've finally finished collating all the data in these documents.
Giles:Thank you, all of you, for your hard work.
The room was filled with applause and some quiet cheers at Giles's words.

(It really is all done, isn't it?)

That ache of loneliness came back to haunt me as I packed my belongings back into my bag.
I followed the other students as they headed out of the room.
The sun was setting, and I walked through the campus with the other students, all of them chattering brightly.

(I get how you all feel—I'm happy it's finally done, too.)

But I knew I wasn't really happy, deep down inside.

(What on earth did Giles mean by what he said?)

The words Giles had spoken just kept going round and round in my head.
I sighed softly, my footsteps slowing, and right then—

Giles, Chapter 4-Sweet Ending:

(What on earth did Giles mean by what he said?)

The words Giles had spoken just kept going round and round in my head.
I sighed softly, my footsteps slowing, and right then—
Leo:Jily, did something happen?
Leo was walking at my side, and he slowed to match my pace.
Jily:What?
Leo:Well, it's just that we've finally finished, but you don't seem very happy about it.

(Aww man, I didn't mean to let my feelings show like that.)

Jily:No, it's fine! It's nothing, really!
I smiled reassuringly up at Leo, trying to push away my gloomy mood.
But I couldn't help glancing at Giles, who was walking just ahead of us.

〝Giles:I wouldn't do that to just anyone.〞

(Well in that case, why did you do it to me?)

The question was burning me up inside, but I couldn't bring myself to say it aloud.

***

After school the next day—

(Ahh, there's no point coming here.)

Without thinking, I found myself standing in front of the student council room door.

(Just yesterday Giles and I were talking together like normal.
(But now we're hardly going to see each other, are we?)

Loneliness filled me up inside, but as I turned away—
???:What are you doing here?

=======

???:What are you doing here?
Jily:Oh!
I lifted my head in surprise, turning around.
Giles was walking down the corridor towards me.

(I'm not even on the student council, and I have no reason to be here. I must look so silly just standing here staring.)

I dropped my gaze away, scrambling for an excuse.
Jily:Um, I—I accidentally left something behind yesterday.
Giles:I see. In that case, come in.
Giles opened the door and stepped into the student council room.
I hesitated for a moment, but I had no choice but to follow him inside.

(That was the worst lie ever. Now what do I do?)

I walked uneasily over to the bookcase, and made a show of searching through the shelves.
Giles watched me for a moment, and then he smiled.
Giles:You look just the same as you did the first time I found you in here.
Jily:I do? How?
Giles:You look—anxious.
Giles:But unlike then, you didn't come in uninvited.
Giles:Don't worry, I'm not about to start scolding you.
Jily:Oh. I guess not.
I glanced over at the curtain where I'd hid myself that day.
I could still remember that moment when our eyes had first met.
The memory sent a sweet ache soaring through me.

(Why do I keep feeling like this?
(My feelings for you are just a mistake, right?)

At that moment, a deep voice murmured in my ear.
Giles:Or is there something you're feeling guilty about?

=======

A deep voice murmured suddenly in my ear.
Giles:Or is there something you're feeling guilty about?
Jily:Ah!
I turned with a start to find Giles standing much closer than I expected.
His face was far too close to mine, and I could feel myself blushing.

(The closer you get, the less I understand my feelings!)

My heart was racing madly in my chest, and I hurriedly tried to step back and get some space.
But instead I just bumped into the bookcase that was directly behind me.
Giles:Jily?
Something about the way he spoke my name made me feel as if he could see straight through me.
I couldn't stand to lie anymore, so I said,
Jily:I'm so sorry. I didn't really forget anything.
Jily:I was fretting about something, and before I realized it I was here.
Giles:Fretting, hmm?
Giles considered my words for a moment, and then gave me a gentle smile.
Giles:Please feel free to tell me about it, if you think I can be of assistance.

(Gah. I have no idea what to say.)

Words whirled aimlessly in my mind as I stared up at him.
He nodded gently, as if encouraging me to speak.

(Well, I dunno if I can explain this very well, but why not?)

Jily:There's this person, and when I think about them, I feel things I don't understand.
Jily:I can't seem to sort out my feelings at all.

(Are my feelings for you really just a mistake?)

Giles hesitated only a moment before he said softly,
Giles:In that case, why not try putting those feelings into words?

=======

Giles:In that case, why not try putting those feelings into words?

(Wait, what?)

It wasn't the answer I'd expected, and my eyes widened in surprise, but Giles went on calmly.
Giles:Sometimes talking about things helps us sort them out.
Giles:Besides, if they are feelings you want to share with that person—
Giles:Perhaps it will be good practice.

(Practice, huh?
(Well, I still don't really know what it is I'm feeling.
(But if I just think of it as practice...)

The words seemed to give me resolve, and I began to speak hesitantly.
Jily:This person is... a little strict, but also very kind.
Jily:And he always acknowledges the things I do well.

〝Giles:Please understand. 'Collating' isn't just copying the information out again.〞
〝Giles:But you did these parts very well.〞
〝Giles:Please try the rest again.〞

〝Giles:Please have respect for your body.〞

〝Giles:I wouldn't do that to just anyone.〞

(Ahh, when I think it over more clearly like this, it makes so much more sense.)

I felt as if I was finally coming to understand my own feelings.
Jily:Somehow, somewhere along the way, I've come to really like him.

(The truth is, I knew it all along.
(I knew these feelings weren't a mistake.)

I looked up at Giles, meeting his gaze directly.
Jily:I like you, Giles. I really like you.

=======

I looked up at Giles, meeting his gaze directly.
Jily:I like you, Giles. I really like you.
The moment I spoke the words, I realized fully what I'd done, and I caught my breath.

(Ahh! This was just supposed to be a practice, but now—)

Panic welled up inside me as I realized that I'd actually confessed my feelings to him.
But then Giles laughed gently, his eyes kind.
Giles:At last you said it.
Jily:What?

(At last?)

I blinked up at Giles in confusion, my heart racing.
He reached out and took my hand, stroking the bandaged finger.
Giles:I told you, didn't I? That I wouldn't do that to just anyone.
Giles:You have become very special to me as well.
His gaze was gentle as he spoke, and my tummy began to do wild somersaults.

(It wasn't a mistake!)

Giles:In spite of the fact that you broke the rules—
Giles:You worked so very hard to help us with everything.
Giles:And somewhere along the way, as I watched you, I found myself captivated by you.
Giles tugged me gently towards him, and I caught my breath.

(Oh!)

A moment later I was wrapped in his gentle embrace.
It was the first time I'd felt his warmth up close like that.
I could feel a reciprocating warmth spreading through my body.
Giles:Please let me say it clearly as well.
Giles:I like you very much, Jily.
As he spoke the gentle words, he hugged me tighter against him.

(This is the first time anyone has told me that I'm special to them.
(I had no idea it would make me feel so giddy, and so full of happiness.
(If I hadn't met you, maybe I'd never have known what this feels like.)

The sun was setting in the sky outside, and it lit up the quiet room in shades of orange and red.
I snuggled up against Giles's chest, feeling warm and safe inside my happiness and his embrace...

Giles, Chapter 4-Premium Ending:

(What on earth did Giles mean by what he said?)

The words Giles had spoken just kept going round and round in my head.
I sighed softly, my footsteps slowing, and right then—

(Huh?)

A female student approached Giles and started talking to him.

(Are those two in the same class?)

I watched curiously as they talked quietly for a minute.
Then they moved away from the rest of us, towards a quiet corner of the schoolyard.
Leo smirked suddenly, and I realized he was watching them as well.
Leo:I bet she's professing her love.
Jily:What?! How can you tell?
Leo:Well, she looks like a freshman to me.
Leo:And she looks really nervous and flustered.
Leo's words surprised me, and I glanced at Giles and the girl again.
Leo:He may not seem it, but Giles is pretty popular with the girls.
Jily:Is he?
I tried to smile in response, but it didn't seem to work, and I dropped my gaze.

(I wanted to say a final goodbye to him before I left, but—)

I continued to follow the others, glancing at Giles and the girl one more time as they walked away.

***

I parted ways with the other students at the dorm and made my way home.
But as I walked slowly down the street, I kept thinking about the girl, getting ready to profess her love to Giles.
Every time I thought about it, my heart ached a little more.

(And the reason it hurts this badly—
(It's because I've fallen in love with Giles, haven't I?)

I could finally admit to myself that my feelings for Giles weren't a mistake.

(But—)

I sighed as I stumbled to a stop.
Jily:I've left it too late, haven't I?
My whispering words were caught by the wind and carried away before anyone could hear them.

***

After that, the days seemed to pass by in a blur.

=======

After that, the days seemed to pass by in a blur.
One afternoon after school—
I was walking towards the school gates, sighing softly to myself.

(I was right—I don't get to talk to Giles anymore.)
(And it's not even just that we don't talk.)
(I haven't even seen him around, not even once.)
(What he said that day—)

〝Giles:I wouldn't do that to just anyone.〞

(I never got to ask him what that meant.)
(But maybe it's better if we don't see each other again.)

I felt as if I might just blurt my feelings out if I saw him.
And I was pretty sure that wasn't such a great idea.
My shoulders slumped as I continued to walk towards the gate, when—

(Hang on.)

Sitting on a bench in the corner of the schoolyard was the cat who'd stolen my bow, so long ago.

(Michelangelo!)

We'd become friends during the time I'd been visiting the student council room regularly.
I sat down next to him on the bench and began to stroke him under the chin.

(Ahh, it seems like it was so long ago that I first met you here.)

〝Giles:You—〞
〝Giles:I'm sure I told you yesterday not to come in here.〞
〝Jily:I'm so sorry!〞

(But it was all thanks to you, Michelangelo.)
(It's because of you that I had a chance to get to know Giles like that.)

Jily:Thank you.
I smiled down at the cat as I spoke.
Michelangelo purred at me, and then hopped down from the bench and darted away.
I followed him with my gaze until I saw where he was headed.

(Oh!)

Giles:There you are, Michelangelo.

(Giles!)

=======

Giles:There you are, Michelangelo.

(Giles!)

It felt like it had been ages since I'd seen Giles, and my heart began to race.
Giles:So you were with Jily all along.
Jily:I just happened to be passing by, and he was sitting here on the bench.
Jily:Were you looking for him?
Giles:Yes. He didn't eat his dinner, so I was a little worried.
Giles walked towards me as he spoke, and sat down on the bench next to me.
Michelangelo had been winding around Giles's legs as he approached the bench.
But all of a sudden he turned and took off in the direction of the school annex.
Jily:Oh!
Giles:Maybe he just didn't realize that I'd put his food out for him.
Giles:I imagine he's heading off to eat it now.
Giles smiled sweetly down at me, but that only set my heart racing even faster.

(When I'm with you like this—)
(It only makes me all the more aware of how I feel about you.)

Jily:Um—I'm sorry I never said goodbye to you.
Jily:I mean, on the last day when we finished that work.
I tried to smile up at him as I spoke.
But in my mind I could see the image of him and the girl professing her love to him.
Giles:Not at all. I'm sorry too.
Giles:Thank you again for all your help with everything.
Giles smiled brightly as he spoke, and it seemed to fill me up with joy deep inside.
I hurriedly changed the topic in an effort to ignore my own feelings.
Jily:Are you heading back to the dorm now?
Giles:Yes. That was my intent from the start, once I'd checked on Michelangelo.
Giles:I have nothing else in particular to do.

(Nothing at all?)

His words sparked my curiosity, and I spoke without really thinking.
Jily:Haven't you been going on dates or anything with that girl—
I caught my breath as I realized what I'd just said.

(Ahh, I didn't mean to say that at all!)

Jily:Oh! I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to pry or anything...
The words came out in a flustered rush as I looked up at his surprised expression.
But after a moment he simply smiled.
Jily:Giles?
I blinked at him uncertainly, not sure how to respond to his smile.
Giles:So you knew about that?
Giles:However, I told her that I couldn't respond to her feelings.
Jily:What?

=======

Giles:However, I told her that I couldn't respond to her feelings.
Jily:What?
It wasn't what I'd expected to hear, and my eyes widened in surprise.
Jily:Why?
Giles smiled wryly in response to my question.
Giles:I appreciated that she wanted to share her feelings with me.
Giles:But if you person you love doesn't care for you in return, there's no point.
Something in the way he said the words made my heart ache.

(You sound as if you're talking from personal experience.)

Jily:So you already have someone you love?

(Ahh, wait, now what am I saying?)

Giles's eyes widened in surprise at my question.
His expression made me realize that I'd said the words aloud.
Jily:Ahh, I'm sorry! I didn't mean—
Giles sighed softly, his eyes narrowing, and I cut myself off.
He turned to look at me, his gaze unusually intense.
Giles:So you haven't realized yet?
Giles:I thought I had made it clear, in my own way.
Jily:Um?
Giles:It's you.
Jily:Wait—what?!
Giles:The person I love is you.

=======

Giles:The person I love is you.

(Wait, really?!)

I was so stunned by his words that I had no idea what to say.
Giles studied my expression as he went on.
Giles:I found myself captivated by you, working so hard all by yourself in the student council room.

(All by myself—wait a minute, don't tell me—)

〝Jily:I agreed to do this work, so I want to do it properly.〞
〝Giles:I see.〞

I remembered the way he'd looked at me as we'd spoken that day.
Even the memory of his intense gaze sent a sweet thrill running through me.
Giles:No matter what you do, you do it earnestly.
Giles:And I love you just like that, Jily.
The familiar way with which he breathed my name made me blush.

(Does that mean—it's okay to tell you how I feel?)

Jily:I—Giles, I love you too.
Jily:So we feel the same way about each other.
I could hear my heart pounding my ear as I spoke.
Giles smiled brightly at my words, reaching out to caress my cheek.
Giles:Yes. Thankfully.
Giles gently slid his hand behind my head, pulling me towards him.
Our faces were so close I could feel his breath against my cheek.
Jily:Giles—everyone can see us—
I pouted up at him, and he gave a soft laugh, wrapping his arms around me.

(Waaah!)

He pulled me around onto his lap, our faces still almost close enough to touch.
Giles:There. Now no one in the schoolyard can see your face.
There was mischief in his voice, and a moment later his lips captured mine.
His kisses were sweet and gentle, and I couldn't help the soft moan that escaped me.

(I know it took me far too long to realize how I felt.
(But I'm glad I didn't keep pushing my feelings away and telling myself they were a mistake.)

Happiness and joy spread through me at the knowledge that we felt the same way.

(You're strict, and yet you're so kind.
(And I love you just like that, Giles.)

The setting sun painted the cloudless sky a gorgeous orange overhead.
But I barely noticed it as I wrapped my arms around Giles's neck, responding eagerly to his sweet kisses...
