A cold and quiet morning breeze made the snow dance across the castle grounds.
Having woken up a few minutes ago, I propped myself against the bed post, looking at the empty spot next to me.
I touched the spot, feeling a bit of the warmth that still remained behind.
The warmth made me remember how we had spent the previous night. "I'll leave when dawn breaks,"
he had whispered with a smile so that we wouldn't be found together.

(I wish we could've spent more time together, even though I know it can't be helped.)

Loneliness started to seep in when a sudden knock brought me back to the realism of a new day.
Giles "Good morning, Princess. May I come in?"

(Giles?)

Jily "Wait, one second! I'll open the door!"
I quickly got ready and opened the door, welcoming Giles inside.
Giles "Ah, so you were still resting.
Giles "I didn't want to interrupt so I did wait longer than usual."
Giles quirked his lips up, and I knew in an instant that he knew what exactly had gone on last night.
Not being able to look straight at him, I lowered my gaze to Giles's pocket watch and saw that it was almost noon.

(I didn't realize it was already this late!)

Jily "Giles, did you want something?"

(If I remember right, my duties don't start till the afternoon today.)

Giles "I forgot to tell you yesterday that the schedule was changed for the next couple of days.
Giles "Things came up after New Years that we hadn't expected."
Jily "Okay. Thank you for letting me know."
Giles told me the new schedule and then let out an apologetic sigh.
Giles "I'm sorry that you'll still have to be so busy from the start of the new year."
Jily "Please don't worry about it. It's not your fault."
I bit back my own sigh as I spoke. Giles gave me a small smile.
Giles "Thank you.
Giles "I also forgot to tell you that you had another great year last year, Princess. I'm proud of you."
Jily "Thanks, Giles."

(Giles doesn't give out compliments often, so when he does, I don't know how to react.)

I quickly changed the topic, feeling a blush creeping up my neck.
Jily "Last year went by fast. I still can't believe it's a new year already."
Giles "Yes, I also agree."
Giles answered in a nostalgic voice. It had been a busy but fruitful year. Giles opened his mouth again.
Giles "Oh, yes.
Giles "Did you hear about the celebration happening in town?"
Jily "No, I haven't! A celebration?"
Giles "I heard that they'll be selling pastries and celebrating the start of the new year."
Giles went on to explain the celebration in more detail.
Jily "That sounds really fun!"
It wasn't hard to imagine the town in a festive mood, and my lips automatically turned into a smile.
I heard a cough and looked up to see Giles staring at me.
Giles "Just to be sure…… I'm telling you this so you know what is going on in this country.
Giles "Not to recommend you to go participate in this celebration."
Jily "O-Of course."
Giles "As long as you understand. I will see you later then."
I watched Giles leave, his face in a smile that I couldn't quite read, and sat back down on the bed again.
It was then that I noticed a small piece of paper by the pillow.

(Hm? What's this?)

I unfolded it carefully. It was easy to tell the scribblings on the paper were his.
Jily "Let's see…… 'Things I want to do with Jily'."
It was like I was reading his mind, and my heart started to beat wildly.
Jily "Wait, this one here……"
Giles mentioned something about it earlier.

(Giles said that this was going to be available at the celebration.
(Does this mean that he wanted to go to this?)

A small smirk escaped my lips.

(Maybe we can go secretly. Make sure no one will find us gone.
(……No, that's close to impossible.)

If this is what he wanted to do, and if it's something we can only do at the festival……
Even though I knew it was close to impossible, I couldn't shake the thought of wanting to make his dream come true.
While I was lost in thought, the door opened slowly─

Reward for 50 Insignia Nico's Bonus Story

1.png
Just as the stars started shining above─
I looked up at Nico, who was pouring me tea as usual. The tea smelled nice and warm, but I had other things clogging my mind.
I remembered his memo, and how it had said that he wanted to see snow together.
Jily "Hey, Nico? ……What do you think about sneaking out of the castle?"
Nico "What did you just say?"
Nico opened his eyes in a surprised manner, and his hand pouring the tea had also stopped in midair.
I told him how there was going to be a celebration in town that would be decorated with sculptures made of snow.
Jily "I thought it'd be fun to go with you."
Nico showed a half-frown, half-smile.
Nico "Did you…… see my memo?"
Jily "Huh?"
My heart skipped a beat, and Nico's half-smile melted into a full one.
Nico "I didn't think you'd be the one to ask me out.
Nico "We'll have to make sure that Giles doesn't find us."
Nico winked, making us both laugh.
We looked carefully at our schedules and found a day where neither of us had that much work, and decided to go on that day.

***

Several days later─
We had snuck out of the castle and after arriving in town, we headed right to the center where the celebration was held.
Nico "It's a bit cold, but are you all right?"
Jily "I am."
Nico "Good. I wonder what kind of sculptures there'll be?"
We spent the next few minutes mulling over what possible things there might be until Nico suddenly turned to face me.
Jily "Nico?"
Nico "Oh, I was just thinking you look adorable today, too."
His words were so out of the blue that it caught me off guard, making me blush and Nico chuckle.
Jily "That wasn't fair."
I faked a pout. Nico kept chuckling as he wrapped his scarf around my neck.
Nico "It's not too bad here, but it might get colder later on.
Nico "Plus this way, you can hide your face. No one will know that you're the princess now."

(Oh, yeah. I'd cause a lot of trouble if they recognized me.)

I sighed happily into the warm scarf, oblivious to Nico leaning in towards me to give me a quick kiss on the cheek.
Jily "Nico!"

(There are people around us!)

Nico "Don't worry so much, Jily. Today's a celebration! I doubt anyone cares what two couples are doing."
Unabashed, Nico held out his hand, and thinking he may be right, I intertwined my fingers in his.
Nico "Jily, look!"
Jily "Oh, wow. Everything's so cute!"
The world seemed to glitter with all the snow on the ground, and there were snow sculptures all around.
Most of them were animals, sculpted with so much detail that they seemed almost real.
We walked around and looked at all the different snow sculptures people had made.
Nico "Hey…… Doesn't this look like……"
Jily "Chirol?"
We stared at the sculpture of a squirrel stuffing its mouth and we looked at each other, bursting out in a fit of laughter.

(I love spending time with Nico so much.)

Nico "Do you want to go look over there?"
Jily "Sure!"
A gentle hand led me to the center. Many people were surrounding a certain sculpture, and I craned my neck to see what it was.
The girls were looking at the sculpture enviously, and the townspeople were remarking how beautiful it was.

(Don't tell me that's……)

Nico "It's a princess."
I felt my heart warm up seeing the beautiful sculpture adored by everyone there.
Jily "Hey…… Nico?
Jily "I'm going to try working harder."
Nico "Even more than you already are?"
Jily "Yes. So that I can become a brave and kind princess like the one the people are admiring right now."
Nico "But you already are."
Jily "You're too easy on me, Nico."
I smiled, still happy at what he had said. Nico squeezed my hand and looked at me kindly.
Nico "You're not just brave and kind.
Nico "You're also a hard-worker, a good leader, cute, and…… really embarrassed right now."
Nico chuckled, and I couldn't help but blush.
Jily "Thank you. I mean it. Really."
I answered sincerely although my gaze was on the ground, not quite ready to meet him in the eye yet.
Nico "When we get back to the castle, I'll teach you just how wonderful you are, my princess."
He whispered in a voice that was lower than usual, and when I looked up, I saw the naughty grin that I knew would be there.

(Being with Nico makes me happy, but sometimes I'm not sure if my heart can handle it.)

My heart raced wildly as I squeezed Nico's hand back……

Reward for 190 Insignia Leo's Bonus Story

2.png
After the New Year, things were even busier than usual.
I sat alone in the study staring down at Leo's memo and sighed.
On it, with beautiful handwriting, said that he wanted to go to the market specially open during the celebration.

(I wanted to go, too, but I don't think it'll be possible……)

An important business meeting was going to be held that day, and I hadn't been able to invite Leo.
Leo "You're frowning. What's wrong?"
Jily "Leo!"
Suddenly hearing a voice from behind, I quickly hid the memo.
Jily "Nothing. I was just thinking."
I told Leo about how I was going to exchange information and opinions with aristocrats from neighboring countries.
The people coming were all brilliant people, and I had to make sure to study as much as I could about current affairs.
Leo "You've been studying more than enough."
Jily "Thanks. But I'm still worried if I'll be able to talk to them as equals."
Leo "I think I have a perfect idea."
After listening to me, Leo raised the corners of his lips into a smirk.

***

A few days later, Leo had woken me up and dragged me out of bed.
Jily "Where are we going, Leo?"
After I had gotten dressed, Leo took my hand, and we were walking down the hallway.
When I asked the question, Leo pressed his index finger against his lips and deepend his smile.
Leo "Let's sneak out. Quietly, so that Giles won't find out."

(Sneak out?)

Jily "I have the business meeting I told you about this evening, so I can't."
Leo "We'll come back in time."
Jily "But……"
Leo "You already studied the things that you might be asked.
Leo "And I'll help out with the preperations once we come back.
Leo "Most importantly, I don't want to see you frowning so much. You know how much I love your smile."
Leo said jokingly as he gently poked the crease in between my eyebrows.

(I didn't realize I was this nervous.
(If I'm this tense, even things that would've gone well, might end up as a disaster.)

Leo "It's important to get a break."
Leo's kindness filled my heart with warmth, and I nodded with a smile.
Jily "Wow……!"
There were many people crowded around the beautifully decorated market place that Leo had taken me to.
I didn't know what to look at─the colorful sweets or the delicious smelling pastries.
Leo "What do you want to get?"
Jily "That's so hard…… Oh, how about this snack!"
We bought a snack I'd never seen before. I took a bite, and a bittersweet taste filled my mouth.
Leo "That delicious, huh? I can tell just by looking at your face."
Leo said with a grin before suddenly grabbing my hand.
Jily "Leo?"
Leo "Shhh."
He led me towards the shadows and gently pulled me into his arms. We held our breaths until some knights passed us by.

(Did they already find out that I snuck out of the castle?)

I looked up at Leo nervously to see him taking out something from his pocket.
Jily "Glasses?"
Leo "Here. Put these on. It's a disguise."
Through my fuzzy vision, I saw Leo smiling misheviously.
Leo "I don't want to go back quite yet since we just arrived, after all."
Jily "I want to enjoy the celebration with you, at least a little bit longer, too."
I smile with him, happy to know that we were both thinking the same thing.
Leo "You look cute with glasses, Jily."
Leo pressed his lips against my forehead lovingly.

(When I'm with Leo, it's amazing how everything I'm nervous about seems to disappear.)

Leo "Let's go look over there, too."
Jily "Let's!"

***

It was lunch before long, and we were resting by the park, enjoying people watching.
Jily "Hey, Leo?"
Leo "Yeah?"
Jily "It was fun to be able to spend time with you today, and it was a good break. Thank you."
Leo "You're welcome."
Leo took back the glasses I handed to him with a smile.
Jily "And I feel more courageous about today's meeting.
Jily "I want to do my best so that the people in this town can keep smiling like this forever."

(And I'm willing to give it my all for that.)

I told him my honest feelings, and the crimson eyes reflecting the gentle winter sunlight softened.
Leo "I know you're a hardworker. You don’t have to worry about anything. It'll all go well."
The kindness in Leo's voice gave me the extra push I needed.
Jily "Thank you, Leo."

(I love how kind you are and how you notice even my smallest signals.)

Words weren't enough to express the love I felt towards him, so I put the emotion into a big smile. Leo chuckled and leaned in.
Leo "Just like how our relationship is going well."
He whispered, his voice sounding husky, and a pleasant shiver went up my spine.
I shifted my gaze, trying my best to hide my pounding heartbeat. As the bell from the clock tower chimed, Leo lifted my chin.
Our eyes met, and he gave me a gentle kiss, and even after the clock stopped chiming, I could feel his heat on my lips……

Reward for 270 Insignia Byron's Bonus Story

3.png
Duties for the New Year started making everyone busy again after a short, but nice winter break.

(Byron should still be here……)

I squeezed the memo inside my hands, and finally finding him, I ran over towards the man I loved.
Jily "Byron?"
Byron "What's the matter? You're out of breath."
Jily "Um, well……"
I automatically blushed, thinking of what had been written by Byron's hand on the memo.
He had written that he wanted to something 'that normal boyfriends and girlfriends do'.
Byron "Oh, yes. I had something I've been meaning to ask you."
Byron smiled as he gently slid a finger against my red cheek.
Byron "It seems that I've lost a memo I'd written, but have you seen it anywhere?"
Finding myself unable to lie under his gaze, I handed him the piece of paper in my hand.
Jily "Is it this?"
I could feel my blush creeping out to my ears now.
Byron "I never thought that you had found it."
Byron smiled wryly while taking the memo.
Byron "I wanted to spend the beginning of the New Year with you.
Byron "I was writing down things I wanted to do if that dream came true."

(It's nice to hear that Byron also wanted to spend time with me.)

I was filled with happiness and excitement to hear him say it aloud.
I told him about a special event that was going to be held in town and asked if he wanted to go.
Byron answered that he would adjust some of his work so he'd be able to go.
Byron "I doubt my people would mind if I visited Wysteria, even if it's not for business, if it's to see you."
I made sure to burn Byron's sweet smile into memory so that I could survive the next few days without him.

***

Several days later, Byron and I were together in town.
Night had fallen, and light swayed gently in the darkness.
Jily "It's so pretty."
Byron "I agree."
Today's event was to light up a candle with the person you held dear.
The townspeople decorated the main road with their candles, making the town light up with a gentle warmth.
It was almost magical to see, like I was in a fairytale.
Byron "I heard you're supposed to make a wish before putting it up for decoration?"
Jily "That's what I also heard."
We lined up to get the candles, and once receiving then, I looked at Byron with a smile.

(I've already decided my wish.)

His beautifully carved face, illuminated by the soft candle light, still made my heart race even after all these years.
It was impossible not to hear the girls around us whispering about Byron.

(Even when he's quiet he attracts attention.)

Byron also noticed the commotion and formed his face into a slight frown.
Byron "They'll recognize you as the princess at this rate."
I pulled the coat around me tighter, trying to hide my face, not wanting to cause Byron trouble.
Jily "Let's go back to the castle, Byron."
Byron "But we haven't finished what we came here to do yet."
Jily "It's more than enough that we were able to spend this time together."
I swallowed my disappointment with a smile.
With our candles still in hand, we decided to go back to the castle.
Jily "I'm sorry. You came all the way to Wysteria, and yet……"
Byron "It was my fault. I should have taken off my eye patch."

(I don't think it was just the eye patch that caught so many eyes……)

I laughed softly and tilted my body to face Byron's.
Jily "At least we were able to get the candles, so let's enjoy the rest of our time at the castle."
Byron "……All right,"
Byron answered after pondering for a bit.
After getting off the carriage, Byron took my hand and led me to the garden.

(Why did he bring me here?)

I continued after Byron curiously as he walked to the Garden's edge.
Byron "Come here."
I stood next to him and followed his gaze. I gasped.
Jily "It's beautiful."
The whole town was visible from where we stood, and instead of the usual darkness, I could see a road of swaying candles.
The magical sight left me speechless.
Byron "You can only see this view here."
Jily "You're right."
I replied with a smile, and Byron pulled me into a loving embrace.
Byron "When I look back on last year, all I can think of is you. It's strange how every memory feels so precious.
Byron "I want to make the same amount of memories with you, hopefully even more this year."
Jily "That would be wonderful."
Happiness flooded through me, and the candles that we lit up seemed to light up a gentle fire inside me, too.
It felt so nice and warm inside his arms that I didn't ever want to let go.

(Please let us make some great memories this year.)

I wished on the candle and looked up to see Byron looking tenderly at me.
And without another word, he kissed me─a soft, but passionate kiss that made me excited for the upcoming year.
