Prologue：
This is a story that happened in a distant land, a story of a secret love affair between the princess and a certain man...
The stars were bright in the sky that night, but I'd barely noticed them at all.
I was attending a large party being held in town, in my position as the princess.
Noble "Well now, if it isn't the princess! Thank you very much for coming.
Noble "Please, relax and enjoy yourself this evening."
Jily "Thank you very much, I will."
Bright, vivacious music played in the background as I exchanged pleasantries with the host, and then watched him walk away.
As soon as he was gone, I let out a long sigh, some of the tension in my shoulders unravelling.
But at that very same moment, a wine glass suddenly appeared right in front of me, and I jumped.
Jily "Hey!"
Nico "Oops, I'm sorry! Did I startle you?
Nico "I should've said something first. Maybe something like— your attendant, Nico Meier, is here for you!"
Jily "No, it's fine. Thanks, Nico."
I laughed a little as I took the glass from Nico, grateful all over again that he was attending the party with me.
He moved to my side, glancing around the room, and then gave me a sympathetic smile.
Nico "Jily, are you nervous?"
Jily "Yeah, a little."
（I mean, it's not like I haven't attended parties like this before, but I was always just a noblewoman then, and one of many.
（I don't have much experience being a princess yet, but everyone seems to expect me to be used to it already!）
A week earlier, it had been announced that our country's king was undergoing long-term medical treatment for a serious illness.
However, the king had no heirs, and I was his closest living relative.
So with very little warning, I'd suddenly been thrust into the position of princess.
Nico "But you're a noblewoman, and you already know how to conduct yourself in public. You'll be fine!
Nico "And I just know you're going to learn to be an amazing princess in no time!"
Jily "Nico... thanks."
（I don't know how I got so lucky to end up with such a great attendant, but I'm definitely not complaining!）
I smiled at him as I took a sip of my wine, and then the sound of lively conversation near the door caught my attention.
Jily "Wait, isn't that—"
Nico "Yes, it looks like it's Leo Crawford, and Rayvis Harneit."
Leo was a merchant from another country, and Rayvis was a gem dealer, and I'd run into them both at the palace many times.
（But I wasn't expecting you two to be at this particular party.）
I stared at them over the top of my wine glass, suddenly wishing I'd been given the guest list in advance.
Nico made a startled sound, and I glanced over at him.
Nico "I didn't realize those two would be here, too."
He was staring at the far wall opposite the door, and I quickly followed his gaze.
A nobleman by the name of Giles Christophe stood there, conversing with a doctor named Sid who sometimes visited the palace.
（I figured Giles might be here, but I wasn't expecting to see Sid here!）
I looked around the room again, wondering if there was anyone else I knew, and my gaze soon stopped on another familiar face.
（So Byron's here, too.）
Byron Wagner was another nobleman that I'd known since long before I'd become the princess.
Nico "Oh, and it looks like Sir Byron is here, too."
Jily "Yes.
Jily "There's more familiar faces here tonight than I thought there'd be! I'll have to go and greet them all later."
Nico "Yes, I agree."
Nico nodded slowly, but then his expression clouded, and he lowered his voice as he said,
Nico "But you should probably keep your distance from the people I just mentioned."
Jily "What?"
But as soon as he spoke the words, I had a feeling I knew what he meant, and a shiver ran down my spine.
（Still, that's no reason to avoid him... is it?）
Jily "But why?"
Nico "You may not be aware of this, Jily, but there are some unsavory rumors going around.
Nico "For example, that man there..."
Nico pressed his lips together, gesturing discreetly with his gaze, and I quickly turned to see who he meant...
