Prologue:

Sweet white and pink flowers bloomed everywhere in the town, giving it a bright, fresh vibe.
It was a season for new beginnings, a season for things to change.
Giles "You will have a special job to do starting from tomorrow."
Giles reached out to pull open a drawer in the desk as he spoke.
Giles "This is the season in Wysteria when thoughts turn to marriage.
Giles "But you have not yet chosen a prince consort."
Giles removed something from the drawer and closed it again.
Then he held out his hand, offering it to me.
Giles "A day will come soon enough when you will be married.
Giles "I would like you to practice what that's like for just three days."
Atop Giles's hand was a small box, the outside made of plush velvet.
Giles "I will leave the choice up to you.
Giles "Who will be your husband for the next three days?"
I stared up at him with wide eyes as I reached out to take the small box from him.

(I'm supposed to choose a husband? Then what's this?)

I hesitated for a moment, and then opened the box.
Inside I found two rings, sparkling brightly...

Who will you choose to be with, Jily?

Nico, Chapter 1, Part 1/5:

Giles "I will leave the choice up to you.
Giles "Who will be your husband for the next three days?"
I opened the small box and found two rings nestled inside.

(If I get to choose—then the choice is easy.)

Jily "I would like to choose Nico, please."
I looked up at Giles, and he gave me a satisfied smile.
Giles "As your attendant, Nico knows you better than anyone.
Giles "He's certainly a suitable choice. I will let him know."
Jily "Thank you, Giles."

***

After requesting Nico as my so-called husband, I finished up the rest of my work for the day.
I walked down the corridors back to my room, thinking about what Giles had said.

(I wonder if he's told Nico about it yet?)

I felt both nervous and excited, my thoughts filled with Nico.
I was wondering what his reaction might be when I heard a noise from behind me.
??? "Jily."
Jily "Hmm?"
I paused and glanced back, feeling as if I'd heard Nico's voice whispering my name.
But there was no one in sight. I turned and was about to start walking again, when—
Jily "Waah!"
Someone grabbed my arm, and I found myself pulled into a sudden warm embrace.
A soft, familiar voice whispered in my ear and set my heart pounding.
Nico "Caught you."

Nico, Chapter 1, Part 2/5:

Nico "Caught you."
Jily Nico!"
I blinked up at him in surprise, and he tightened his grip on me.
Nico "Giles told me about how you chose me.
Nico "I was so happy—I almost did a little dance right in front of him."
Nico smiled down at me, his expression bright, his eyes sparkling.
There was such joy in his expression that I found myself smiling brightly back at him, my heart still pounding.
Jily "Nico?"
Nico "Yes?"
Jily "I'm looking forward to the next three days."
His smile broadened at my words, and he reached up to touch my cheek.
Nico "Me too.
Nico "Also, Jily?"
Jily "Yes?"
Nico "Could you show me the rings Giles gave you?"

(The rings?)

Jily "Okay."
I wasn't sure what he wanted, but I pulled out the small box Giles had given me.
I placed the box in Nico's outstretched hand, and he looked up at the starry night sky.
Nico "I know it's only three days, but I wanted to propose properly.
Nico "And I wanted to pick somewhere pretty to say it."
His cheeks were flushed as he kneeled down in front of me.
He looked up at me, and his face seemed to glow in the silvery light of the moon and stars.

(Oh gosh, Nico—)

My heart began to pound even faster as I looked down at him.
His gaze was serious as he reached out to take my hand.
Nico "Jily."

Nico, Chapter 1, Part 3/5:

Nico "Jily."
Nico knelt before me on the balcony, his eyes serious as he looked up at me.
Nico "Will you marry me?"

(I know it's only going to be for three days.
(But somehow it feels like we really are getting married.)

Jily "Yes!"
I blushed happily as I said it, and Nico slipped the ring onto my ring finger.
Nico "I'll wear mine in the same place, okay?"
Nico grinned at me as he slid his ring onto his ring finger as well.

(Oh gosh, I didn't expect to feel this happy.)

I held out my hand next to his, and our matching rings sparkled in the moonlight.
I felt suffused with happiness, and I looked up as Nico reached out to touch my cheek.
Nico "Thank you, Jily. No wait, that's not right.
Nico "Thank you, my dear, adorable wife."
Nico's words were a husky murmur as he moved close and pressed his lips against mine.
Suddenly I could hardly wait for our married life to begin.

***

It was decided that Nico and I would live together away from the palace for our three days of married life.
So we went to stay at the house I'd lived in down in town before becoming princess.

(Whew. I think that's everything.)

I sighed with relief as we finished unpacking, and Nico smiled at me.
Nico "I think we're done, Jily.
Nico "Why don't we take a break?"
Jily "That sounds nice."
We sat down on the sofa together, and Nico leaned towards me, his eyes bright with mischief.
Nico "Hey, let's make some rules."
Jily "What sort of rules?"
Nico "You know, like married couples have.
Nico "We need a kiss when leaving, and a kiss when coming home.
Nico "And also—"

Nico, Chapter 1, Part 4/5:

Nico "We need a kiss when leaving, and a kiss when coming home.
Nico "And also—"
Nico was counting the rules off on his fingers, but then he paused, his smile widening.
He leaned closer and whispered in my ear, his voice honey sweet.
Nico "And we definitely need a goodnight kiss."
Without warning he pressed a sudden kiss against my lips.
Jily "Nico!"
I laughed helplessly, feeling myself blushing at the sudden kiss.
Nico grinned happily at me, and then began to giggle.
Nico "Ahh, you're so adorable when you react like that."
Jily "Well, I wasn't expecting it!"
Nico "Sorry.
Nico "But it won't be sudden next time, right? Can we have those rules?
Nico "Are you ready for that many kisses?"

(Geez, stop looking at me with those puppy dog eyes! As if I'd say no anyway.)

I pretended to think it over seriously, but I couldn't hide my smile for long.
Jily "I'm ready."
Nico "Good."
Nico beamed at me again and kissed me gently on the lips.

(Would it be like this every day if we were married for real?
(You'd always keep me on my toes, that's for sure!)

I smiled back at him, feeling a flutter of excitement and happiness as I imagined it.

***

That evening—
Nico "Jily, come here."
Jily "Okay."
Nico and I climbed into bed, and I snuggled into his warm embrace.

(I can't believe an entire day is over already.
(These three days are going to go by in a flash.)

I felt a sudden twinge of sadness at the realization.
I snuggled a little closer to Nico, sighing softly to myself.
Nico "Hey, Jily?"

Nico, Chapter 1, Part 5/5:

Nico's cheery voice seemed a contrasting counterpoint to my sigh.
Nico "Hey, Jily?"
Nico "Do you want to play a word-chain game?"
Jily "A word-chain game? You mean where each word has to start with the last letter of the previous word?"

(Gosh, I haven't played those in years.)

I looked up at Nico, and he smiled sweetly down at me.
Nico "Yep. It'll be fun, right? And if we do something fun—
Nico "Well, we can forget about feeling sad and sleep well tonight."

(Did you realize that I was feeling sad?)

Jily "Nico—thank you."
His kindness warmed me right through, and I smiled up at him as he cuddled me tighter.
Nico "Okay, so I'll start. Hmm. Picnic!
Jily "Ummm... Caramel.
Nico "Love."
Nico spoke without hesitation as he leaned in to steal a kiss.
Jily "Geez, Nico!"
Nico "Jily, you're blushing again!
Nico "But we've kissed so many times already! Are you still shy?"
Jily "Well, I thought we were playing a word game, not a kissing game!"
Nico laughed merrily at my response, his expression bright with happiness.
The sight of him like that set my heart pounding again.

(Oh gosh, I'm so happy right now.
(I wish this could last forever.)

I whispered the wish to myself as we continued to joke and laugh together.
My sadness was soon banished with laughter, but we were having far too much fun to sleep.

Nico, Chapter 2, Part 1/5:

It was the second morning of our married life.
I woke up early and prepared breakfast for us, then carried it to the table where Nico was waiting.
Nico "Oh, wow!
Nico "Did you cook all of this yourself?"
Jily "Yes. Why don't you try something?"
Nico "Okay!"
Nico nodded happily and reached for a bite of French toast.
Nico "Wow! Yum!"

(Oh—)

Nico beamed at me as he swallowed, and I noticed there was honey stuck near the corner of his lips.
Jily "Nico, you've got honey on you."
Nico "Really? Could you get it for me?"
Jily "Sure."
I smiled, reaching out to wipe the honey from his lips, and he leaned closer to catch my gaze.
Nico "It's only morning, yet I'm so happy."
The sweet, gentle light in his eyes sent a shiver right through me.
Jily "So am I."
Nico "Really? Then I'm even happier."

(Nico, you're too cute for words.)

We sat there for a moment just smiling at each other and enjoying each other's company.
But we were interrupted by a knock at the door.

(It's awfully early, who could that be?)

I started to get up, but Nico had put down his fork and was already standing up from his chair.
Nico "Don't worry, Jily, I'll get it."
Nico gave me a reassuring smile as he crossed to the door.
He pulled it open—
Nico "Oh!"

Nico, Chapter 2, Part 2/5:

Nico's eyes widened in surprise, and he blinked several times.
Nico "Wah!"
I looked up in surprise at Nico's startled voice.
Two young girls who were the spitting image of each other bustled into the room.

(Where did you come from?)

I stared at the girls in surprise as they stood there gazing up at Nico.
Girl 1 "You're so cool!"
Girl 2 "So cool!"
Nico "Um—"
Nico seemed lost for words, but then an older woman entered the room.
She explained that she was there on Giles's suggestion.
She then went on to tell us that the orphanage was short on staff and they needed someone to look after the girls for a day.
Nico "I see! Well, if that's the situation, then leave it to us!"
Nico and I were both quick to agree, and the woman left looking a lot more relieved than when she'd arrived.
As Nico shut the door behind her, the two girls in their matching dresses spoke up.
Girl 1 "I'm Lillie!"
Girl 2 "I'm Collie!"
Collie "We're looking forward to spending the day with you!"

(So they're twins. They're so cute!)

Jily "Lillie, Collie, let's have fun today, okay?"
I smiled at them, and they both leapt into my arms, giggling happily.
Lillie "Hey, since we're actually here in town, I want to go look at necklaces!"
Collie "I want to look at rings!"
Lillie "We saved up a bit of pocket money! Please?"
Nico "Now, you two, don't cause too much trouble for Jily.
Nico "We'll take you once we've all eaten breakfast, okay?"
Collie "Really?!"
Lillie "Yay!"
At Nico's promise, the two girls pulled away from me and leapt into his arms instead.
Nico "Oh wait, Jily. Is it okay for you to make breakfast for these two as well?"
Nico gave me a chagrined smile as he surrendered to their enthusiastic hugs, and I couldn't help but giggle.

(Nico, you look just like a happy father.)

Jily "Sure. Lillie, Collie, wait here with Nico while I make breakfast for you."

***

Lillie "Yay! Is this for breakfast?"
Collie "I love French toast!"
I put plates down in front of the girls and they began to eat happily.
Nico "Lucky for you, eh? Jily makes the best breakfasts ever!"
The whole room seemed to be filled with a bright, cheerful atmosphere.
I headed back into the kitchen, smiling as I listened to the happy chatter at the table.

Nico, Chapter 2, Part 3/5:

Breakfast finished on a cheerful note, and then the four of us headed out.
We went straight to a small store in town so that Lillie and Collie could buy the things they wanted.
Jily "Lillie, how about this one?"
Lillie "Yeah! It's so cute!"
Collie "It suits you, Lillie! And I think you have enough money!"

(If I had a daughter, would it be like this? I'm having so much fun.)

I smiled as I watched the two lively girls.
Lillie "Hey Nico, what do you think?"
Nico "I think you look cute."
Collie "Do you really think so, Nico?"
Collie's voice was doubtful, and Nico giggled as he looked down at her.
Nico "I really do. I think you're both cute.
Nico "But the cutest one of all is my wife."
Jily "Wha—"
There was no hesitation in Nico's voice, and I blushed helplessly.
Lillie "Eww, Nico and Jily are all lovey-dovey!"
Collie "They so are! Look, Jily is bright red!"
Jily "Really, you two!"
Both girls were giggling and pulling faces at me, and I started laughing as well.
A moment later the shopkeeper interrupted us.
Shopkeeper "Excuse me, miss, but I believe I have the ring the young lady was looking for."
Jily "Ahh, thank you! Can we see it, please?"
Shopkeeper "Of course. Please come this way."
Jily "You girls, stay here with Nico. I'll be right back."
Nico "Okay."
Lillie & Collie "Don't be too long!"
Jily followed the shopkeeper to the back of the store, leaving the two girls alone with Nico.
Collie "Hey, Nico?"

Nico, Chapter 2, Part 4/5:

Collie tugged on Nico's sleeve, and he looked down at her.
Collie "Hey, Nico?"
Nico "Yes?"
Collie "What sort of dress did Jily wear at your wedding?"
Lillie was looking over at Jily where she stood talking to the shopkeeper.
Collie's eyes were sparkling with anticipation as she waited for Nico's reply.
Nico "Well... actually, Jily and I didn't have a wedding."
Lillie and Collie looked at each other, their expression mirroring surprise.
Lillie "But why? Every girl dreams of her wedding!"
Nico "I guess you're right. But... there were some adult circumstances that meant we couldn't."
Collie "What's that supposed to mean? Don't treat us like kids!"
Lillie "Anyway, I don't care about any dumb adult circumstances!
Lillie "It's your job as a man to make your woman happy!"
Collie "Yeah, that's right! Even more so if she's your wife!"
Nico's eyes went wide as the two girls berated him one after the other.
Nico "It's my job to make her happy, huh?
Nico "Hmm. I just had a great idea."
Lillie & Collie "You did?"
Nico "Listen up, okay?"
Nico grinned as he crouched down and began to whisper to the two girls.

Nico, Chapter 2, Part 5/5:

The shopkeeper brought out the ring for me and checked the sizes, and I returned to where Nico and the girls were waiting.
Jily "Sorry to keep you waiting.
Jily "Collie, they have the ring you wanted, and it looks like they have your size, too."
Collie "Wow, thanks!"
Collie took the ring that I held out to her, her eyes sparkling.

(She looks so happy. Gosh, kids are so adorable.)

I smiled as I looked down at her, but then suddenly she frowned.
Collie "But you know, I don't think I want it anymore.
Collie "I'm sorry for making you look for it for me."
Lillie "Me too. I don't need a necklace anymore."
Jily "What? Why? Did something happen?"

(You were both so excited about these only a few moments ago.)

I stared down at them in confusion as they exchanged glances with each other and with Nico.
Nico "It's a secret, right?"
Lillie & Collie "Yep!"
Jily "I see."

(I feel as if the three of you suddenly became best friends while I was gone.
(Or am I just imagining things?)

I looked from one to the other curiously, but none of them seemed interested in telling me anything more.
I was still feeling confused as we left the shop behind us.

Nico, Chapter 3, Part 1/5:

We spent the rest of the day shopping and sightseeing in town before returning home.
I sent the two girls in to have their bath, and then Nico dried their hair for them while I had my own bath.
Lillie "Nico, are you done yet?"
Nico "Almost done. I have to dry it properly so you don't catch a cold.
Nico "There you go. You can go to bed now."
Lillie "Yay! Come on, Collie, let's go!"
Collie "Okay! Thanks, Nico!"
Lillie and Collie grabbed each other's hands and ran off to the bedroom together.

***

The girls were tucked into bed by the time I got out of the bath, and Nico greeted me with an impish smile.
Nico "Do you want me to dry your hair for you, too?"
Jily "I can dry it myself, thanks!"
Nico "In that case, I think you've forgotten something."
Jily "I have?"
Nico "My goodnight kiss. I thought we had a rule."
Nico grinned at me, his face moving towards mine.

(Oh, Nico—finally we're alone.)

I smiled at him, my heart pounding, and closed my eyes, when—

(Ahh!)

I heard the door creaking open.
I turned to look and saw Lillie and Collie peeking through the doorway at us.
Nico "C'mon, you two! Back to bed!"
Nico turned away from me and crossed the room towards them.
Both girls began to giggle and shriek as they dashed into the room again and began to run around in circles.

(I don't know why, but I'm really enjoying this.)

I laughed as I watched the three of them running around the room after each other.
At last Nico managed to catch both girls, and he hustled them off to bed.
Nico "Okay, Lillie and Collie are both in bed. Maybe for good this time. Why don't we go to bed too?"
Jily "Okay."
Nico "Come on, then."
Nico smiled brightly at me, reaching out to take my hand.

Nico, Chapter 3, Part 2/5:

We walked into the bedroom together, hand in hand.
The girls were lying in the middle of the bed, and Nico and I lay down on opposite sides of them.
Lillie "Nico, I'm not tired yet. Could you tell me a story?"
Nico "Sure.
Nico "Once upon a time, there was a young girl who lived in a small village..."

***

Nico "...and the girl and the prince who rescued her lived happily ever after. The end."
Nico was greeted with silence at the end of his story, and I looked down.
Both the girls were completely sound asleep.
Jily "Well, they've been running around all day, I guess they're exhausted."
Nico "Probably."
Nico and I spoke in whispers as we glanced down at the two sleepers.

(That reminds me—)

Jily "You know, they were both so eager to buy jewelry this morning.
Jily "I wonder why they suddenly decided they didn't want it anymore?"
It had been at the back of my mind all day, but Nico only smiled vaguely at my question.
Nico "Who knows? Kids can be fickle sometimes."
Jily "I guess so."

(You may be right, but I can't help thinking there's more to it than that.)

I looked down at the girls again, marveling at how peaceful they looked in their sleep.
The sight of them brought a smile to my face.

(They're so adorable.)

I sighed and lay back against my pillow, still watching them sleep.
Before I knew it, my own eyes were falling shut and I was drifting off as well.

***

It was late at night, and Jily was sleeping soundly.
Lillie, Collie, and Nico crept out of the room together, trying to be as quiet as possible.
Nico "Now, tonight is the only night I'll let you stay up late, okay?"
Lillie & Collie "Okay!"
Nico "Good. Let's get started."
The three nodded to each other, and then began to work hard under the dim light of the lamp.

Nico, Chapter 3, Part 3/5:

The next morning—
I opened my eyes to bright sunlight, and found myself alone in bed.

(Huh?
(Where's Nico and the girls? Did they get up already?)

I looked around in confusion, and then headed for the door, when—
Lillie "Quick, Jily! Get dressed!"
Collie "Quick, quick!"
Jily "Wait, what?!"
Lillie and Collie rushed into the room, both of them grabbing me by the hand.
The girls dragged me out of the bedroom to a corner of the living room, so that I was facing the wall.
Jily "What's with you two?
Jily "And where's Nico?"
Collie "It's a secret!"
Lillie "Never mind, put this on!"
Lillie handed me a bundle that turned out to be a beautiful white dress.

(What on earth is going on?)

I was more than a little confused, but the girls were insistent, so I got dressed and ready.

***

When I was clad in the white dress and my hair was done, the girls grabbed my hands again.
Collie "All done!"
Lillie "Let's go, Jily!"

(What on earth?)

They turned me around so I could see the room again.
But it was different from how it had been earlier—it was brightly decorated with flowers and ribbons.
I stared around me in shock, and then I saw Nico walking towards me.
Nico "You look beautiful, Jily.
Nico "May I have your hand?"
Nico offered me his hand in an elegant gesture, and I placed my hand hesitantly in his.
Jily "What's going on?"
Collie "It's your wedding!"
Lillie "We heard you couldn't have one, so we prepared one for you with Nico!"

(Oh my gosh—I don't know what to say!)

I stared at the three of them in disbelief, and Nico gave me an abashed smile.
Nico "The girls told me it's my job as a man to make you happy.
Nico "And they're right—I want to make you happy, Jily."
Jily "Oh, Nico—Lillie—Collie—"
Their kindness overwhelmed me with happiness, and I couldn't find the words I needed.
Lillie and Collie beamed up me, and then came to stand in front of me.
Collie "Jily, this is from me."
Lillie "And this is from me."

Nico, Chapter 3, Part 4/5:

Collie "Jily, this is from me."
Lillie "And this is from me."

(Oh!)

Both girls held something out to me at the same time.
One was a bouquet of chrysanthemums, and the other was a boutonniere for Nico.

(But—I remember seeing these in the window at the store we went to yesterday!
(Don't tell me this is why you didn't want your jewelry anymore?!)

Nico "They told me they wanted to give you presents for your wedding."
Nico smiled at me, and I felt overwhelmed again with gratitude.
Jily "Lillie, Collie, thank you so much. I'll treasure them."
The girls smiled up at me, their expressions bright with joy.
Then Collie stood up a little straighter, and cleared her throat importantly.
Collie "I think this is where they say 'you may now kiss the bride.'"
Nico "Sounds about right to me. Right, Jily?"

(Well, I feel a little shy doing it in front of the girls, but—)

All three of them were looking at me, their expressions equally hopeful.
I couldn't help but smile at them as I nodded.
Jily "Right."
Nico reached out and cupped my cheeks, lifting my face towards him.
Nico "I swear that I will make you happy for the rest of your life."
His lips pressed against mine in a gentle kiss, and Lillie and Collie squealed happily.
Collie "Congratulations, Jily!"
Lillie "You look so beautiful!"
Jily "Thank you.
Jily "You too, Nico. I'm so happy."
Nico "Me too. I'm so happy it's almost scary."
Nico smiled as he wrapped his arms around me, and a moment later the girls hugged us both around the middle.

***

The morning seemed to pass by in a flash, and before we knew it the woman from the orphanage arrived to pick up the girls again.
Jily "Lillie, Collie, come here."
I beckoned the girls over to me, and crouched down next to them.
I handed each of them a pair of flower-shaped earrings in a different color.
Lillie "Jily! These are—"
Jily "I'm sorry it's not the jewelry you wanted to buy yesterday.
Jily "But this morning was such a special memory for me. So this is my thank-you to you both."
Collie "They're beautiful!"
Lillie "Thank you, Jily!"
Lillie and Collie clutched the earrings tightly as they jumped up and down excitedly.
Jily "We'll come visit you again, I promise."
Nico "See you both later!"
Nico and I stood there together, waving to the girls as they turned away.
Then suddenly Collie turned back and grabbed Nico's hand.
Collie "Nico!"

Nico, Chapter 3, Part 5/5:

Collie "Nico!"
Nico "Yes?"
Nico blinked down at her in surprise.
Collie "Promise you'll make Jily happy!"
Lillie "If you don't, we'll smack you hard!"

(Oh gosh, you two—)

They stared at up Nico's with matching fierce expressions, and he giggled.
Nico "Of course. I swear I'll make her happy for the rest of her life."
He smiled and then leaned closer to whisper to them.
Nico "And when we have a proper wedding, I promise we'll invite you both."
Collie "Really?!"
Lillie "It's a promise then!"
I didn't hear what it was that Nico whispered to them,
but it was clearly something good by the way they smiled brightly up at him.

***

After we saw the girls off, we returned to the house.
(It was only one day, really, but—)
Jily "Somehow the place seems empty without them."
Nico "Yeah, it really does."

(Oh!)

Suddenly Nico wrapped his arms around me from behind.
Nico "It was fun spending time with the girls, but—"
Nico's warm body pressed up against me, and his voice whispered sweetly in my ear.
Nico "But now we're finally alone."
The room was quiet around us, so quiet that my racing pulse seemed unusually loud.
Nico's arms tightened around me, and I—

Nico, Chapter 4-Sweet Ending, Part 1/5:

Nico "But now we're finally alone."
Nico's arms were warm around me, and his body was pressed up close against mine.

(You're right. I had fun with Lillie and Collie, but—
(It meant that we didn't have any time together alone.)

Jily "You're right."
I nodded, reaching up to place my hands over his where they rested around me.
Nico "Hey, Jily?
Nico "Today is our last day together like this, isn't it?"
Jily "Yes."
Nico "Do you mind if I call you my wife again?"
I remembered when he'd said it before, and how happy it had made me feel.
I blushed a little as I looked up at him, nodding slowly.
Nico "Thank you."
Nico loosened his grip on me, and turned me around in his embrace.
I looked up at him to find him staring down at me with serious eyes.
Nico "I love you, my dear wife."

Nico, Chapter 4-Sweet Ending, Part 2/5:

Nico "I love you, my dear wife."
His voice was filled with sweetness and affection, and it set my heart pounding.
He put his hand against the wall behind me, leaning towards me.
His lips captured my lips in a sudden kiss, his mouth feverish on mine.
His body pressed up against me, pushing me back against the wall.
There was an eager passion to him in that moment, and passion rose up in me to meet it.
Nico "Oh man. I'm too happy.
Nico "I don't ever want to let you go again."
Jily "I feel the same."
Nico "Then you say it, too. Tell me you love me."
Jily I love you, Nico. With all my heart—"
I'd barely finished speaking before he kissed me again.
His kisses grew deeper, and I responded eagerly, our mouths moving together.
I reached up and wrapped my arms tightly around him, holding him close.

(I'm so happy I don't care about anything but being with you.
(This moment I'm sharing with you is all that matters to me.)

We gave ourselves over to the heat and passion of the moment, not regretting a single kiss or caress.

***

Before we knew it, our three days of married life were over.

Nico, Chapter 4-Sweet Ending, Part 3/5:

We returned to the palace to find our usual routines waiting for our return.
Giles "I heard nothing but praise from the people at the orphanage.
Giles "And you seem to have had a successful married life with Nico."
Jily "Thank you, I did."
I smiled up at Giles, and he looked down at the ring I was still wearing.
Giles "Now that your practice is over, I'll take that back."

(Oh—)

Jily "Of course, you're right."

(It kind of makes me feel sad and lonely, but—)

I carefully removed the ring from my finger and handed it to Giles.
Giles "You must be tired. Please spend the rest of the day resting."
Jily "Thank you."

***

I stepped out of the study and headed back towards my chambers.

(I only had it on for three days. And yet—)

I could still clearly remember the moment when Nico had put the ring on my finger under the starry night sky.
My heart was filled with a sadness that I couldn't quite name.

(Well, I guess I'll get used to it quickly enough.)

I sighed softly, reaching down to touch my finger where the ring had been.
Nico "Jily?"

Nico, Chapter 4-Sweet Ending, Part 4/5:

Nico "Jily?"

(Oh!)

I jumped in surprise as Nico called my name from behind.
Nico "You look worried.
Nico "Is something bothering you?"
Jily "Not exactly."
I shook my head quickly, but I couldn't help but glance down at his left hand.

(You don't have your ring anymore either.
(I guess Giles made you return it too.)

Nico tilted his head slightly as he studied my expression, and then laughed softly.
Nico "I know what it is.
Nico "You're thinking about our rings, aren't you?"
Jily "What?"
His question was so spot on that my heart skipped a beat.

(But you're right, and I don't want to lie about it.)

Jily "Yes, I am. It just—it made me sad, to take it off."
My shoulders slumped a little as I spoke, and Nico smiled at me again.
Nico "I love how honest you always are.
Nico "I actually wanted to talk to you about that. Could you come with me?"

Nico, Chapter 4-Sweet Ending, Part 5/5:

Nico led me through the palace to a small room.
It was a room that no one seemed to know about besides the two of us.
Nico "Here. This is for you."
Nico offered me a small box, and I took it curiously.

(What's this?)

I opened the lid and found a beautiful ring inside, sparkling gently in the light.
Jily "Nico! What's this for?"
Nico "It's a present from me. After all, the rings we were wearing were just on loan.
Nico "Give me your hand."
Nico reached out and took my right hand in his, slipping the ring on my ring finger.
Nico "I don't want anyone to guess, so I'm putting it on your right hand. And I don't have one for me.
Nico "But I had an 'N' engraved inside the ring, so you'll always know it's from me."
Jily "Oh gosh, Nico—"
Nico smiled shyly at me, and for a moment I felt as if my heart might burst with happiness.
Jily "Thank you so much. I'll treasure it forever."
I reached up, squeezing the ring gently with my other hand, and Nico's smile brightened.
Nico "I may look like an attendant and nothing more.
Nico "But I hope you'll let me be your prince when we're alone together.
Nico "I love you."
His voice was sweet and husky as he pressed his lips against mine.

(You'll always be my prince, Nico.)

I didn't have the words to express all I felt for him, so instead I kissed him with all my heart and soul.
I clung to Nico as we kissed and kissed again, sharing all our love for each other...

Nico, Chapter 4-Premium Ending, Part 1/5:

Nico "But now we're finally alone."
Nico's arms were warm around me, and his body was pressed up close against mine.

(Today is the last day that we'll be together like this, isn't it?)

Jily "I feel lonely already."
Nico "What?"
I spoke without thinking, and Nico blinked at me in confusion.
Jily "Sorry, that sounded silly.
Jily "I was just thinking, I'm so happy right now that the thought of leaving makes me feel lonely."
Nico "Jily—"
Nico burst out laughing, and then hugged me even tighter.
Nico "Gah, you're too cute sometimes!
Nico "You're right, I don't want to leave you either."
Nico rested his chin on my shoulder, nuzzling against my neck.
Jily "Nico—"
I blushed in response to his laughter, but then he began to whisper in my ear again.
Nico "Hey, Jily.
Nico "It's our last day. Why don't we do something special together?"

Nico, Chapter 4-Premium Ending, Part 2/5:

Nico "Hey, Jily.
Nico "It's our last day. Why don't we do something special together?"

(Something special? Like what?)

I turned to look at him, but he only smiled meaningfully at me.

***

(Is this what you meant by something special?)

Nico took me to a nearby lake, where it seemed like we were the only two people for miles.
Jily "It's beautiful!"
The water of the lake reflected the starry sky above, and I gasped in delight.
Nico "It's even more beautiful if you look at it like this."
Nico spread a blanket out on the grass in front of us, and lay down on it.
Nico "Come here, Jily."
Jily "Okay."
He looked beautiful, lying there like that, and my tummy fluttered as I lay down next to him.
Jily "Oh wow!"
Nico was right—something about lying on the ground made the stars more beautiful.
Jily "It really is more beautiful like this."
Nico "I know, right?
Nico "Oh! Look!"
Nico pointed above us, where a shooting star had left a bright trail across the sky.
Nico "Jily, did you see that? A shooting star!"
Jily "I did! But I didn't get to make a wish before it vanished."
I pouted a little, and Nico giggled as he looked over at me.
Nico "If you could make a wish, what would you wish for?"

(Well, that's easy.)

Jily "I'd wish that you and I could be together forever.
Jily "What about you?"
Nico "Me? Let's see."

Nico, Chapter 4-Premium Ending, Part 3/5:

Jily "I'd wish that you and I could be together forever.
Jily "What about you?"
Nico "Me? Let's see."
Nico thought about it for a moment, and then rolled over to look at me, his gaze serious.
Nico "I'd wish that I could make all your wishes come true."
Jily "Nico?"
Nico "I want to be with you forever, and make you happier than anyone.
Nico "So happy you never even need to make wishes like that."
Jily "Oh, Nico—"

(I never imagined you might say something so sweet.)

His gaze was gentle, and it filled me up with warmth inside.
I realized that I was blushing, and I wondered if he could see it in the moonlight.
I rolled towards him and pressed my head against his arm, trying to hide it.
Jily "Thank you. I'm already more than happy enough."
Nico "Nope. I wanna make you even happier."
Nico spoke firmly, and reached down to tilt my head towards him.

Nico, Chapter 4-Premium Ending, Part 4/5:

Nico "Nope. I wanna make you even happier."

(Oh!)

Nico gently cupped my cheek with his hand, lifting my face towards him.
His lips pressed against mine in a tender kiss.
Nico "You're always right here with me, making me so very happy.
Nico "It feels like no matter how happy I make you, it's never enough to make up for that.
Nico "Even now I'm almost too happy. It's killing me."
Nico whispered the words in between soft kisses, and each whisper set my heart pounding faster.
He reached down and took hold of my hand, lifting it towards him.
He placed a soft kiss on my ring finger, where I still wore the ring.
Nico "I'm gonna keep doing my best to make you as happy as possible.
Nico "So I hope you'll accept my real proposal when I'm able to make it."
The light that sparkled in Nico's eyes was stronger than that of any star in the sky.
His words echoed loudly in my mind, filling me with joy and hope for the future.
Nico "I know our three days are almost over.
Nico "But will you marry me one day?"

Nico, Chapter 4-Premium Ending, Part 5/5:

There was determination and love in his wide eyes as he stared at me.
Nico "I know our three days are almost over.
Nico "But will you marry me one day?"
He gripped my hand firmly as he spoke, his voice low and serious.
I smiled at him, a smile that was wide and bright with all the joy I felt.
Jily "Yes, I will."
Nico "Ah, yikes."
Nico's blush deepened, and his gaze skipped away from mine.
Nico "No matter how many times you say yes, it makes me so happy.
Nico "I'm gonna end up proposing to you over and over until you're totally sick of me."

(Nico, you're so adorable.)

Nico looked honestly worried, and I began to giggle.
Jily "That's okay. No matter how many times you ask, I'll always give the same answer."
Nico "Well, that's good.
Nico "Because it really does make me super happy."
Nico rolled towards me again, wrapping his arms around me and hugging me tightly.
I buried my face in his warm chest, and he began to stroke my hair gently.
Nico "It's a promise, Jily.
Nico "I love you."
Jily "I love you, too."
I reached out with my left hand and caught hold of his left hand, twining our fingers together.

(We won't be wearing matching rings for much longer.
(But I know we'll be wearing each other's rings one day.)

Our mouths came together in another kiss, Nico's lips passionate and warm against mine.
His kisses felt like a reaffirmation of our love, and a promise for the future yet to come...
