Prologue:
Sweet white and pink flowers bloomed everywhere in the town, giving it a bright, fresh vibe.
It was a season for new beginnings, a season for things to change.
Giles:You will have a special job to do starting from tomorrow.
Giles reached out to pull open a drawer in the desk as he spoke.
Giles:This is the season in Wysteria when thoughts turn to marriage.
Giles:But you have not yet chosen a prince consort.
Giles removed something from the drawer and closed it again.
Then he held out his hand, offering it to me.
Giles:A day will come soon enough when you will be married.
Giles:I would like you to practice what that's like for just three days.
Atop Giles's hand was a small box, the outside made of plush velvet.
Giles:I will leave the choice up to you.
Giles:Who will be your husband for the next three days?
I stared up at him with wide eyes as I reached out to take the small box from him.
(I'm supposed to choose a husband? Then what's this?)
I hesitated for a moment, and then opened the box.
Inside I found two rings, sparkling brightly...

Louis, Chapter 1:
Giles:I will leave the choice up to you.
Giles:Who will be your husband for the next three days?
I stared down at the two rings sparkling in the small box in my hand.
(I know who I want to choose.)
Jily:Lou—
I started to say the name of the man I was thinking of, but I was interrupted by a knock at the door.
Louis:Jily?
Jily:Louis!
(What are you doing here?)
I turned in surprise, my eyes wide, and Giles nodded as he glanced up at a clock.
Giles:That's right, you were scheduled to arrive now.
Louis stepped up next to me, speaking quietly to Giles.
Louis:If you're still discussing something, I can wait outside.
Giles:Thank you. But we're almost done.
Giles smiled breezily at Louis and turned to face me.
Giles:Now, I believe you were about to say someone's name?
(Ahh! Don't ask me that now that Louis's here!)
Louis:Hmm?
I glanced at Louis, and as our eyes met I found myself blushing.
Jily:Um—I'll give my answer later.
I curtseyed to both Giles and Louis, wishing I could hide my red cheeks.
Then I turned towards the door and hurriedly left the room.
Louis stared at the closed door, confusion on his face.
Louis:What's wrong with Jily?
Giles:I'm sure she was just embarrassed.
Louis:What about?
Giles laughed softly, and then said in an amused tone,
Giles:Actually, there's something I'd like to talk to you about, Louis.
=======
I shut the door quickly behind me, and then turned and stared at it.
(I didn't realize Louis was going to turn up right then!
(And I got so flustered I rushed out without thinking.)
My cheeks were still burning, and I winced as I looked down at the box Giles had given me.
(Never mind. I'll talk to Louis properly about it later.)
***
I finished up my work for the morning and took a short break.
I made my way through the palace, looking for Louis.
(Where could he be?)
I stood in the garden, looking around me, when—
???:Jily.
(That voice—)
I started to turn around, just as a pair of warm arms wrapped around me from behind.
Louis:Caught you.
Jily:Louis—
I smiled as I turned to look up at Louis.
He gazed down at me, his beautiful blue eyes seeming almost clear in the bright sunlight.
Louis:Let me guess.
Louis:Were you looking for someone to choose as your husband?
(Oh!)
My eyes widened in surprise at his words, my heart skipping a beat.
(Did Giles tell you?)
As soon as I realized that, my thoughts turned to the box in my pocket.
(I need to tell you how I feel.)
Jily:Louis—
=======
Jily:Louis—
Jily:I was feeling too shy to say this earlier, but—
(It was so sudden! And now I'm embarrassed again just thinking about how silly I was.)
I chewed my lip as I looked up at him, my cheeks flushed again.
Louis tightened his grip on me, his expression relaxing.
Louis:You're so adorable, Jily.
Louis leaned closer to catch my gaze, his eyes sparkling.
Louis:If you're still feeling shy about it, let me say it instead.
Jily:Wait, what?
(What's that supposed to mean?)
I blinked up at Louis, and he loosened his grip on me and stepped back a little.
He reached out his hand to me, palm upraised.
Louis:Can you give me the rings Giles gave you?
Jily:Okay.
I pulled the box out of my pocket and handed it to Louis.
Louis opened the box and pulled out one of the rings.
He gently took hold of my left hand and slid the ring onto my ring finger.
Louis:Jily.
Louis:Would you do me the honor of being my wife?
Louis lifted my hand to his lips and placed a soft kiss against my ring finger.
(Oh, Louis—)
Happiness filled me up inside, flooding through me and washing away all my embarrassment.
Jily:Thank you. I'd love to.
Jily:May I put your ring on for you?
Louis:Of course.
Louis offered me his left hand, and I slid the ring onto his ring finger.
I looked up at him as I let go of his hand.
(Wait a minute, Louis, are you—)
Louis was staring down at the ring on his finger, a blush creeping slowly up his cheeks. I smiled up at him.
Jily:You're so cute, Louis.
Louis:What?
The words slipped out before I'd thought about them, and Louis blinked at me in confusion.
His gaze skittered away from me, and after a moment he shook his head.
Louis:No, I'm not.
Jily:Oh, really?
Louis looked down, his eyelashes feathering against his cheek, and then reached up to cup my cheeks.
Louis:Jily.
=======
Louis:Jily.
Louis's voice was husky as he whispered my name, his hands cupping my cheeks.
He pressed his lips against mine in a sudden kiss, and my heart leapt.
Jily I closed my eyes and gave myself over to the kiss, gasping into his mouth.
Louis pulled back again, his thumb trailing along my lower lip.
Louis:Now you're the one blushing.
Jily:Well, what do you expect?
Louis:See, you're the one who's cute.
Louis:Much, much cuter than me.
There was an impish edge to Louis's smile, and I grinned back at him.
(Ahh, you always know how to get me, Louis.)
I reached up and touched his cheek as we smiled happily at each other.
And so my married life with Louis was set to begin.
We decided to start that evening, as soon as we were both done with our work.
It was decided that we'd live down in the town for the three days of our married life.
After we finished unpacking our luggage, I hurried to start making dinner.
(Now, what should I cook?)
I began to tie the ribbon of my apron at the back of my neck.
Louis:Let me tie that for you.
I felt Louis touch the back of my neck, his fingers gentle as he tied the ribbon in a bow.
Jily:Thank you.
He was standing so close to me that I could feel the warmth emanating from his body.
Louis:Let me tie this one, too.
He slid his hands down my back, reaching for the ribbon at my waist and tying it for me as well.
(Ahh, I'm trying to stand still, but I can't focus right when you're so close!)
I took a deep breath and tried not to show how his closeness was affecting me.
But as soon as Louis finished tying the ribbon, he slid his arms around me, pulling me closer.
Louis:You're blushing.
=======
Louis:You're blushing.
Jily:No, I'm not!
His voice was teasing, and I mock-pouted up at him.
He placed a finger against my lips, his smile bright with happiness.
Louis:Liar.
Jily:Oh, really?
Louis:But now that you and I are husband and wife—
Louis:You want me to pay more attention to you. Am I right?
Jily:Louis—
Louis:Yes?
His blue eyes seemed filled with happiness, and my heart sped up as I met his gaze.
(Ahh, when you look at me like that—)
Jily:You're not wrong.
I smiled slowly as I spoke, and Louis smiled back, nuzzling against my neck.
Louis:Then while you're cooking—
Louis:I'll stay nice and close to you, just like this.
Louis pressed his body up against mine, and I could feel how warm he was through the thin fabric of our clothes.
(Ahh, there's no way I'm gonna be able to concentrate on my cooking!)
I chewed my lower lip for a moment, and then tried to distract myself.
Jily:Louis, what do you want for dinner?
Louis:Beef rissoles.
Louis:And glazed carrots.
I smiled at the immediacy of his answer.
Jily:Okay.
I turned towards the counter and began to prepare dinner, Louis's arms still wrapped tightly around me.
Louis, Chapter 2:
At long last dinner was ready.
(That took longer than usual, but—)
I set the beef rissoles and the glazed carrots down on the dinner table.
Louis's eyes sparkled as he looked down at the food.
Louis:It looks delicious.
(It tasted okay while I was preparing it, so I hope you enjoy it!)
I sat down next to Louis at the table, watching out of the corner of my eye as he took a bite.
A smile spread across his face as he chewed and swallowed.
Louis:I don't know if it's because you're the one who cooked it, but—
Louis:This is the most delicious beef rissole I've ever eaten.
Jily:I'm glad you like it.
His sweet words banished all my worries about what he might think of my cooking.
I smiled happily up at him, and he leaned over and kissed me on the cheek.
Jily:Louis?
Louis:Thank you for being my wife.
Louis:I'm so very happy right now.
His expression was gentle as he smiled at me, and then he went back to eating his dinner.
My heart was so filled with happiness at his reaction that I barely tasted my food at all.
***
We finished dinner and cleaned up the plates together.
Then we lay down on the sofa together, and I cuddled up to Louis.
He wrapped his arms around my waist, and then reached down to touch my left hand.
Louis:Jily, show me your hand.
Louis lifted my left hand so that he could see it, his fingers stroking my ring.
Louis:You really are my wife.
Jily:Well, yes.
Louis:It's almost like we really did get married. I'm so happy.
(Oh, Louis—)
Jily:So am I.
I reached up to stroke Louis's hair, feeling almost overwhelmed by how happy I was right then.
Then I heard the clock on the wall chiming the hour.
(Gosh, how did it get so late?)
(I guess it's about time we got ready for bed.)
Louis:Hey, Jily?
Louis:Let's have a bath together.
I could hear the mischievous smile in Louis's voice as he murmured in my ear.
Louis:I'd like to have a bath with you.
=======
Louis:I'd like to have a bath with you.
Louis:What do you think?
He tightened his grip on me, his arms warm and reassuring.
I felt suddenly shy for a moment, but then I realized how happy the idea made me.
(I think I like that idea.)
I looked up at Louis, placing my hand over his as I nodded with a smile.
***
Louis and I sat in the bathtub together, facing each other.
(I'm still feeling a bit shy about all this, but—)
I looked across the bathtub at Louis, who was watching me with gentle eyes.
(I feel so happy, getting to share these special moments with you.)
The water in the tub swirled around me as Louis reached out to touch my hair.
Louis:Jily, your hair's all wet.
Even as he spoke, droplets of water fell from his golden hair to land in the tub.
Jily:So is yours.
I reached towards his hair, and then I was struck with an idea.
(I know!)
Jily:Can I wash your hair?
Louis:What?
Louis's eyes widened in surprise, and he blinked at me.
(Well, you've been surprising me so much today. In a good way, but—)
(I want to surprise you too.)
(And make you feel happy and excited, like you've done to me.)
Jily:I can't?
I blinked hopefully up at Louis, and his expression relaxed into a smile.
Louis:No, that sounds nice.
Louis turned around, and I began to wash his hair gently, the shampoo foaming up.
Louis:Thank you. That feels nice.
He met my gaze through the nearby mirror, smiling at me.
Louis:I want to wash you too, after this.
Jily:My hair's a lot longer, and it's a lot of hassle. Don't worry, I'll be fine.
Louis:I didn't mean your hair.
Louis:I meant your body.
Jily:Oh!
Louis's gaze was sparkling with mischief as he glanced back at me, and I blushed helplessly.
Jily:I think I'd be too shy for that!
Louis:Why? I love your body.
=======
Louis:Why? I love your body.
I laughed at his sweet assurances, my pulse speeding up.
(If we really do get married one day, will it be like this?)
(I'm almost too happy!)
***
The next morning—
Louis and I visited the cafe terrace at the market to eat breakfast.
Jily:I love their breakfasts here. Isn't it delicious?
Louis:It really is.
Louis smiled and nodded as he ate his fresh croissant.
Louis:The food here is certainly good.
Louis:But everything's fun when I do it with you.
Jily:Louis—
Louis spoke the words casually, but with a firm, sure air.
My heart swelled with warmth and happiness.
I smiled up at him, about to speak, when—
???:Ahh, there they are!
=======
???:Ahh, there they are!
A familiar voice spoke from behind me, and I turned to look.
Leo was walking towards us, leading a young boy with blond hair by the hand.
Louis:Leo?
Leo:Good morning, Louis, Jily.
Jily:Who's this?'
Leo:Actually, we were hoping you could take care of him for the day.
Leo:The orphanage is under-staffed today, and they can't take care of everyone.
(Oh gosh, that's awful!)
I nodded sympathetically as Leo gently pushed the young boy towards us.
Leo:Aren't you going to introduce yourself, Frederic?
Frederic took a hesitant step forward, and looked up at us.
His eyes seemed impossibly wide as he stared up at us in silence.
Louis stared back at him, and for a moment the resemblance between them was almost uncanny.
Then Louis knelt down next to Frederic, meeting his gaze.
Louis:Do you want to have some croissants with us?
Frederic's cheeks flushed red at Louis's question, but instead of saying anything he simply nodded.
Leo:He's a bit shy, I guess.
Louis smiled gently at Frederic, as if trying to reassure him.
Louis:That's okay. Let's have breakfast together.
***
We soon finished our breakfast, and left the cafe behind us.
We took Frederic to the nearby plaza, and stopped to look around.
Louis:Do you want to play with the other children?
Louis spoke gently to Frederic, but the boy bit his lip and said nothing.
(You really are shy, aren't you?)
Jily:Why don't we all play together, then? The three of us?
I tried another suggestion, and Frederic finally spoke.
Frederic:I...
=======
Louis and I had made gentle suggestions to Frederic.
Jily:Why don't we all play together, then? The three of us?
Frederic:I... want to go home.
Frederic's voice was quiet and strained, and Louis and I looked at each other.
Louis looked uneasy, and I wondered what he was thinking.
(Well, I guess it's understandable, though.)
(Frederic's suddenly been handed over to people he doesn't know to take care of him. I'd be worried, too.)
I gave Louis a questioning look, and he nodded and offered Frederic his hand.
Louis:That's okay. Let's go home, then.
***
We returned to the house and gathered in the kitchen to make cookies.
(I hope this will help us get to know each other a bit better.)
I wondered if there was any way I could make things more fun for Frederic.
I kneaded the dough, and then pulled off a piece and began to shape it.
Jily:Frederic, if you pull and stretch the dough like this, you can make cookies in any shape you like.
Jily:Do you want to give it a try?
Frederic didn't say anything, but he took a piece of dough and began to shape it, looking excited.
At the same moment Louis lifted his head from the piece of dough he was working on.
Louis:I'm done.
Jily:That was quick, Louis.
(I wonder what shape of cookie you made?)
I looked down at the cookie in front of Louis, and Frederic came over to peer at it too.
Frederic:A bunny?
Louis:What?
Louis blinked down at the cookie in surprise, and then mumbled softly,
Louis:A bird.
Frederic's eyes widened at Louis's words.
Frederic:It looks more like the shape of a country.
Frederic's voice was soft, and then he giggled quietly.
(Oh gosh! He laughed!)
As I stared down at Frederic, he suddenly caught his breath,
as if realizing where he was, and dropped his gaze shyly.
(Aww, you're so shy. But I think we're all more relaxed now.)
I smiled to myself, feeling relieved, but right then—
Frederic:Oh!
Frederic reached out to shape his cookie again, but his elbow bumped the bag of flour on the counter and it began to fall.
Louis:Frederic!
Louis pulled Frederic towards him before the flour could spill all over him.
Then he gave us both a relieved smile.
Louis:Let me go get something to clean this up.
Jily:Thanks, Louis.
Louis stepped out of the room, and Frederic spoke in a guilty, wavering voice.
Frederic:I'm sorry.
Jily:Don't worry about it.
(You don't say much, but you're a good kid, aren't you?)
I reached out and ruffled his hair gently, and he looked up at me.
Frederic:Um, Jily?
Jily:Yes?
(That's the first time you've called me by name!)
I felt elated to think we were getting to know each other better, and I crouched down in front of him.
I looked Frederic in the eye, and he began to speak earnestly, his voice quiet.
Frederic:The truth is, I...
Louis, Chapter 3:
Frederic:The truth is, I...
I frowned thoughtfully as I listened to what Frederic had to say.
***
That evening—
Louis and I lay in bed together.
Frederic was lying sound asleep between us, his breathing soft and even.
Jily:He's so cute.
Louis:Yes, he is.
Louis nodded happily, but then his expression clouded a little.
Louis:But... he doesn't seem to like me very much.
Jily:What? Why would you say that?
Louis:Because he never says a word to me.
(Oh, Louis—)
Louis looked so sad, and I couldn't help but think about what Frederic had told me earlier that day.
〝Frederic:Um, Jily?〞
〝Frederic:But don't tell Louis about this, okay?〞
(I want to tell you, Louis. But I can't yet.)
Jily:He's just not used to you yet.
Jily:Tomorrow is our last day together, so let's just relax and have fun, okay?
I smiled at Louis, and his expression relaxed a little.
Louis:You're right.
Louis:Goodnight, Jily.
Jily:Goodnight.
I lay down against the bed, gazing at the sleeping Frederic for a while.
Then I turned to look at Louis. His eyes were closed, and his breathing slowed as he drifted off to sleep.
=======
The next morning—
Some urgent work had come up that Louis needed to attend to, and he wouldn't be back until that evening.
Louis:I'm so sorry.
Jily:Don't be. It's work, you can't help that.
I straightened Louis's cravat for him, smiling as I shook my head.
Jily:There you go.
Jily:Have a good day, okay?
Louis:I will.
Louis nodded and started to turn away, but just then Frederic peeked out from the bedroom.
Louis:Frederic, come over here.
Frederic hesitated in the doorway of the bedroom for a moment.
Then he crept out and slowly crossed the room to where we stood.
Louis leaned over and patted him gently on the head.
Louis:Take care of Jily while I'm away, okay?
Frederic said nothing as he stared up at Louis with wide eyes, but he nodded firmly.
Louis:I'll see you bother later, then.
We waved to Louis until he was gone, and then I turned to Frederic.
Jily:What perfect timing, Frederic.
Jily:Let's start preparing things now, okay?
A short while later—
Louis arrived at Wysteria Palace, and he ran into Leo in the corridors.
Leo:Hi, Louis.
Leo:What a shame you had work come up on the last day of your married life.
Louis:Yes.
Louis said nothing more, and Leo gazed at him curiously.
Leo:You don't seem very chipper today.
Louis gave a long, soft sigh, and then said,
Louis:Do you think kids hate me?
Leo:What?
Louis:No, it's nothing.
Louis wandered off down the corridor, avoiding Leo's gaze.
Leo:I wonder what happened?
Leo muttered the words under his breath as he watched Louis walk away.
=======
The clock on the wall chimed the hour, letting us know that it was early evening.
(Louis should be getting home any minute now.)
Jily:It's almost time, Frederic.
Frederic:Yes.
Frederic nodded happily as he stared at the feast laid out on the dining table.
(But what Frederic said really surprised me.)
Frederic:Um, Jily?
Frederic:I really love croissants.
Frederic:And I love Louis for letting me eat croissants.
Frederic:How can I tell him thank you?
Frederic:But don't tell Louis about this, okay?
(I had no idea Frederic felt that way... but I'm sure Louis will be so happy when he finds out.)
My heart was pounding with excitement, and right then there was a knock at the door.
Jily:That must be him!
Frederic:Oh!
Frederic and I stood there excitedly, waiting for the door to open.
Louis:What the—
Louis stopped just inside the doorway, staring around the decorated room.
Jily:Okay, now!
Jily & Frederic:Welcome home, Louis!!
Frederic and I cried out in a happy cheer to welcome Louis home, and something flickered in his eyes.
Louis:This is—
=======
Louis:This is—
Jily:Frederic and I prepared it for you.
I smiled brightly at Louis, and he blinked several times in surprise.
Louis:Frederic? You too?
Frederic had been half-hiding behind me, his hands gripping my skirt,
but at Louis's question he shuffled forward and looked up.
Frederic:The croissants you gave me were delicious.
Frederic:Thank you.
Louis:Frederic—
(Louis, Frederic—you both look so happy.)
They were both smiling so brightly at each other, and I giggled as I watched them.
Jily:Why don't we eat before it gets cold?
Louis:Okay.
Louis sat down at the table, and then offered Frederic his hand.
Louis:Frederic, come and eat with us.
Frederic:Okay.
Frederic moved towards his seat at the table, but Louis said,
Louis:Come over here.
Louis lifted Frederic onto his lap, and kissed him softly on the forehead.
Louis:Thank you.
Louis:You too, Jily.
Jily:Not at all.
(I'm so glad we cleared up that little misunderstanding.)
The three of us began to eat our meal together.
Both Louis and Frederic were smiling more than I'd ever seen either of them smile.
=======
After we'd enjoyed our dinner together, Frederic returned to the orphanage again.
Louis and I saw him safely off, and then went for a walk around town together, holding hands.
Jily:Frederic was so cute, wasn't he?
Louis:Yes. I'd like to go visit him again.
Louis:And I'm so glad he didn't hate me.
Louis looked a little embarrassed, and I couldn't help but giggle at him.
(You really were worried about that, weren't you?)
Jily:Me too. We definitely have to go visit him again.
I smiled wistfully as I spoke, and Louis squeezed my hand gently.
Jily:Louis?
I looked up at Louis just as he leaned over to whisper in my ear.
Louis:I was really happy spending time together with you and Frederic.
Louis:But now it's just you and me.
(Oh—)
His voice was syrupy sweet, and it was enough to set my heart pounding.
I gazed into his deep blue eyes, feeling captivated by them, unable to look away.
Louis:Jily.
Louis:How do you want to spend our last evening together?
(Our last evening, huh?)
I considered Louis's words for a moment, and then—

Louis, Chapter 4-Sweet Ending:
Louis:Jily.
Louis:How do you want to spend our last evening together?
Louis's gaze was enticing, and my heart skipped a beat.
(Our last evening, huh?)
I glanced up at the sky overhead, scattered with countless twinkling stars.
(I want to—)
Jily:Louis, I want to go stargazing with you.
The words were spoken before I'd even really thought of them.
Louis:What?
Jily:I want to look at something beautiful with you. I guess it seems like a silly thing, but—
Jily:I always feel so happy relaxing and spending time with you.
I felt myself blushing as I spoke, but Louis smiled gently at me.
Louis:I understand.
***
We walked to a nearby lake where the stars were clearer than ever, and spread a cloth under a tree to sit down.
Jily:It's so beautiful.
The sight of the stars overhead took my breath away, and then Louis squeezed my hand.
Louis:Jily. There's something I want.
Jily:Yes?
Louis:I want to lie down with my head in your lap.
(Oh gosh.)
I blushed a little, my heart fluttering with anticipation as I nodded.
Louis moved around until he was lying down, his head cushioned by my lap.
Jily:The stars are beautiful, aren't they, Louis?
I moved my gaze from the night sky to Louis as I spoke.
But then I realized Louis wasn't looking at the stars—he was looking at me.
His eyes were gentle in the dim moonlight as they met mine.
(Louis?)
=======
Louis wasn't looking at the stars—he was looking at me.
His eyes were gentle in the dim moonlight as they met mine.
Jily:What's the matter?
I spoke softly, and Louis's gaze slid away from me.
Louis:I was just thinking how today was our last day, and it made me feel sad.
Jily:I feel the same way.
(I don't want to say this aloud, but—)
(I wanted to make a wish while looking at the stars.)
(I wanted to wish that we could always be together like this.)
That was the entire reason I'd wanted to come look at the stars.
Yet now that we were here, I found myself looking at Louis rather than the stars.
Louis:Jily.
Louis:Let's get married one day. For sure.
Louis reached up, his hand gently caressing my cheek.
(I already know the answer to that.)
I reached up and placed my hand over his where it rested on my cheek.
Jily:I'd like that.
A soft night breeze whispered past us, gently ruffling Louis's hair.
Louis:Let's seal our promise with a kiss.
I leaned over towards Louis and pressed my lips gently against his.
(I wish that the day will come—
(The day when we can be married like this, forever.)
I closed my eyes and wished upon the faint light of the stars ghosted behind my eyelids.
Louis's lips moved against mine, and I gave myself over to his kisses.
***
Our three days of married life were over, and I returned to the palace.
I was busy focusing on my work when Giles paid me a visit.
Giles:Princess, this is from Louis.
=======
Giles was scanning a document as he stepped into the room.
Giles:Princess.
Giles:This is from Louis. It's a report on your married life down in town.
My eyes widened in surprise at Giles's words.
Jily:From Louis?
Giles:Yes.
Giles looked down at the document again, and began to read aloud.
Louis:As a wife, she supported her husband, and as a mother made her child smile.
Louis:I believe she is perfectly suited not only to be queen but also wife and mother.
(I had no idea he felt that way.)
Louis's words sent a burst of happiness through me, filling me with warmth.
Giles:Since you have done so well, all that remains is to choose a prince consort.
Giles lowered the parchment, smiling cheerfully at me.
Giles:I would like you to meet with a candidate today.
Jily:Wait, what?
Giles:I realize that you practiced your married life with Louis.
Giles:However, you have not formally nominated him as your prince consort.
(Do I really have to meet someone other than Louis?)
Giles:I would appreciate your assistance with this.
Jily:Very well.
I spoke the words quietly, not wanting to let Giles down.
But the happiness that had filled my heart a moment earlier was replaced by sadness and regret.
=======
That afternoon—
I made my way to the garden, which was to be the meeting place with the candidate.
(There's no one here yet. I wonder—)
I looked around uneasily, wondering who I was going to be meeting there.
???:Jily.
(That voice—)
I turned in surprise to find Louis standing behind me, a gentle smile on his face.
Jily:Louis—but why—
Louis walked towards me, his smile widening.
Louis:I told you, didn't I? That we'd get married for sure.
(Hang on a minute—)
〝Louis:Let's get married one day. For sure.〞
(And that's what this is all about?)
My heart was filled with joy again, and I smiled brightly up at Louis.
Jily:Thank you, Louis.
Jily:But in that case, you didn't have to go about it like this...
I spoke the words uncertainly, but Louis's smile only widened further.
Louis:But Jily—
=======
Louis:But Jily—
Louis:I really do mean it. That's why I'm here.
(What do you mean?)
I blinked up at Louis in confusion, not sure what he was trying to say.
Louis reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a small box.
Louis:Here, take a look.
Louis slowly opened the box, and I peered inside.
(Is that a ring?)
I was so startled I had no idea what to say, and I stared at Louis as he took hold of my left hand.
He gently slid the ring onto my ring finger, just as he'd done before.
Jily:Louis—this is—
Louis:We can't wear those other rings anymore now that our three days are over, right?
Louis:So this is a gift from me.
Louis:The truth is, I've been wanting to give you a ring I picked out for a long time.
(Ahh, this is almost too good to be true!)
Louis's smile was sweet and filled with happiness.
He gazed at me with bright, clear eyes, his fingers warm against mine.
Louis:Princess, will you do me the honor of nominating me one day?
There was a gentle edge to his formal words, and I curtseyed in response.
Jily:I'd be delighted, Louis.
My voice trembled with happiness as I spoke, and Louis pulled me gently towards him.
He hugged me tightly against his chest, his arms warm and sure around me.
Louis:I love you, Jily.
Louis:I hope you'll stay with me for always.
His voice was husky as he whispered in my ear, and a moment later his lips caught mine.
I twined my fingers with his, feeling the weight of the ring on my finger as I gave myself over to his kisses...

Louis, Chapter 4-Premium Ending:
Louis:Jily.
Louis:How do you want to spend our last evening together?
Louis's gaze was serious as he waited for my answer, and my heart skipped a beat.
(I want—)
Jily:Today is the last day of our married life.
Jily:So I want to go on a date with you, as if we really were a married couple.
(I want it to feel like we're really married, right up until the end.)
I spoke the words hesitantly, but Louis smiled in response.
Louis:Okay.
Louis:I'd like to go on a date with you too.
Our hands were still linked, and he lifted my hand towards his lips and kissed it gently.
***
Louis took me to a well-known dance hall in town.
(Wow, this is amazing! I've never been here before.)
Louis:Jily.
As I stood there looking around me in wonder, Louis spoke my name softly.
I turned towards him, and he gently fitted a simple mask over my face.
Jily:What's this for?
Louis:Lots of people wear them here. And if no one can see your face, no one will know who you are.
Louis:This way we can just be a normal couple.
(Oh, Louis—thank you.)
(You're doing everything you can to grant my wish, and it makes me so happy.)
A bright melody began to play, and Louis offered me his hand in a graceful gesture.
Louis:May I have this dance, dear wife?
=======
Louis:May I have this dance, dear wife?
Louis's voice was sweetly teasing, and I flushed with happiness.
Jily:I'd be delighted, dear husband.
I placed my hand in Louis's and we began to dance together.
It was entirely different from dancing at a ball, and I felt suffused with pleasure and happiness.
Louis:Come closer, Jily.
Jily:Really?
Louis:Like this.
(Oh!)
Louis caught me around the waist and lifted me into the air, spinning me around for a turn.
Louis:Did I startle you?
Jily:A little!
(And yet—)
Jily:That was really fun.
We smiled at each other, completely caught up in the mood, when—
Woman 1:Hey, that gorgeous guy over there—isn't that Duke Howard?
Woman 2:It is! I've never had a chance to get anywhere near him! Let's go talk to him!
I heard the whispering voices of the nearby women, and it brought me back to myself with a start.
Jily:Louis—
Louis's gaze dropped to the floor, and I heard him sigh softly.
Louis:Come with me.
***
Louis caught me by the hand and we hurried out of the dance hall together.
We ran down a quiet, deserted street for a while, until at last Louis stopped.
Louis:I think this should be far enough.
Jily:Probably.
I nodded as I tried to catch my breath, and Louis grimaced as he watched me.
Louis:I'm sorry, Jily.
Louis:I guess it's not that easy for us to have a normal date after all.
(Oh, Louis—)
I looked up quickly at his words, and our eyes met.
We gazed at each other in silence for a long moment, and then both of us smiled at the same time.
Jily:But I had a great time.
Louis:So did I.
Louis:I feel like I can overcome anything, so long as I'm with you.
Jily:I feel the same.
Louis shifted his grip on my hand, twining our fingers together, when—
Woman 1:Where did he go?
Woman 2:I think it was this way!
Jily:Gah!
I caught my breath as I heard the sounds of the women still trying to find Louis.
Louis:Jily, this way.
(What?)
***
Louis wrapped his arms tightly around me and pulled me into a dark alleyway.
He glanced out into the street and then turned back to look at me.
=======
Louis's arms were warm around me, and his face seemed closer than ever.
We stared into each other's eyes in the dim moonlight, and I felt captivated by his gaze.
(Oh—)
Louis's gaze seemed more mature and more sensual than usual somehow.
As we continued to stare at each other, I felt desire spreading through me.
Louis:What's with those come-hither eyes?
Jily:What?
Louis:You look like you want a kiss.
I blinked up at Louis in surprise, a flush spreading across my cheeks.
Jily:Do I?
Louis:Well—
Louis hesitated at my answer, his eyes narrowing slightly.
Louis:Maybe—
Louis:Maybe it's just that I want a kiss.
He tightened his grip on me, pulling me closer.
His lips captured mine in a kiss, his warmth drawing me in and making me forget where we were for a moment.
Jily:Louis—
I whispered his name as our lips parted, our faces still so close that I could feel his breath on my cheek.
Louis:So you didn't want a kiss?
Jily:I did.
I murmured the words, my lips brushing against his as I did so.
Louis:Good. Because I've been wanting to kiss you all night long.
Louis:I want to hold onto this a little longer—this feeling that you're my wife, and I'm your husband.
=======
Louis:Jily.
Louis breathed my name between kisses, and I clung to his upper arms.
Jily:Louis—
Louis paused at my breathless tone, his face hovering close to mine.
Louis:What is it?
Jily:I'm worried that someone might come past and see us. Can we go home first?
Louis dropped his gaze thoughtfully, his eyelashes fluttering against his cheeks.
Louis:We can. But—
Louis:If we go home, there's going to be more than just kisses.
My heart began to pound at the implicit suggestion in his words.
Louis:Is that okay with you?
My cheeks flushed with anticipation and I looked up at him with bright eyes.
Jily:Yes.
I gave a little nod as I buried my head in his chest.
***
The door to the house was barely shut before we were kissing again.
Louis's kisses were deeper than they had been before, and I gasped softly into his mouth.
I felt light-headed with need, and I clung tightly to him.
Louis:Jily, you're so beautiful.
I couldn't think of a thing to say, so I just clung tighter to him.
He reached down and began to undo the buttons on my dress.
Louis:I want to touch you all over.
Louis murmured the words against my bared skin as he lifted me in his arms.
He carried me across to the bed and set me down on the covers.
Louis:You're the best wife in the whole world.
Louis reached for the buttons on his shirt, his smile sweet and yet mischievous.
I dropped my gaze shyly for a moment as he shed his clothes.
Then he leaned over me, and I gazed up at his bare chest, lit up by the moonlight.
He pressed his warm body down against me.
=======
Louis gazed at me in the dim moonlight of the room.
He pressed his warm body down against me where I lay on the bed.
Louis:I love you, Jily.
There was a sweet smile on his lips as he pressed them against my collarbone.
I gasped softly as the gentle touch sent a thrill of pleasure through me.
(I love you too, Louis.)
I closed my eyes and reached up to wrap my arms around him, our bodies moving together.
***
(Nnnnnn—)
I woke slowly from my sleep to the faint sound of birds chirping outside.
I opened my eyes to the morning sunlight shining in through the window.
(Oh—)
Louis was lying next to me, his sleepy gaze gentle, his hair golden in the sunlight.
Louis:Good morning, Jily.
Jily:Good morning.
(Louis, you're so beautiful.)
I stared at him in wonder, completely taken by the sight of him, and he laughed softly.
Louis:What's wrong? You're staring.
I came back to myself with a start, blushing.
Jily:You're just so beautiful.
Jily:I was wondering if this was all a dream.
Louis:Really?
Louis:I promise it's not a dream.
His smile was gentle as he pulled me into his arms and kissed me gently.
Louis:See?
Jily:You're right.
His sweet smile seemed to enfold me in happiness, and I nodded up at him.
Our lips came together in another kiss, and I sighed as they parted.
Louis:I'm not a dream—I'm right here with you.
Louis:And I'll be happy to remind you of that as often as you need.
(Oh, Louis—)
A gentle breeze wafted through the window, making the curtains dance.
It brought with it the faint scent of fresh grass and flowers from outside.
(I know we have to go back to the palace today.)
(But I want to enjoy our married life together for just a little longer.)
My heart was so full of happiness I almost couldn't bear it.
I snuggled closer into Louis's embrace and closed my eyes again.
