Prologue:

Sweet white and pink flowers bloomed everywhere in the town, giving it a bright, fresh vibe.
It was a season for new beginnings, a season for things to change.
Giles:You will have a special job to do starting from tomorrow.
Giles reached out to pull open a drawer in the desk as he spoke.
Giles:This is the season in Wysteria when thoughts turn to marriage.
Giles:But you have not yet chosen a prince consort.
Giles removed something from the drawer and closed it again.
Then he held out his hand, offering it to me.
Giles:A day will come soon enough when you will be married.
Giles:I would like you to practice what that's like for just three days.
Atop Giles's hand was a small box, the outside made of plush velvet.
Giles:I will leave the choice up to you.
Giles:Who will be your husband for the next three days?
I stared up at him with wide eyes as I reached out to take the small box from him.

(I'm supposed to choose a husband? Then what's this?)

I hesitated for a moment, and then opened the box.
Inside I found two rings, sparkling brightly...

Leo, Chapter 1:

Giles:I will leave the choice up to you.
Giles:Who will be your husband for the next three days?
I stared down at the two rings, sparkling inside the small box.

(The person I want to choose is—)

Leo's face sprang to my mind clearly.
Jily:I'd like to choose Leo.
I looked up at Giles, and he checked the pages of my schedule.
Giles:Very well.
Giles:After your work this morning, you have a lesson with Leo, don't you?
Giles:I will let him know about your choice before your lesson.

(I wonder how Leo will react?)

I felt suddenly nervous and excited, but I tried to push it away and focus on my work.

***

At last my work for the morning was finished, and I made my way to Leo's study.
It was time for my usual lesson, and I sat down across from him.
Leo was teaching me from a book that was open in front of him, and he tapped the page.
Leo:Now, this particular country...
As I listened to Leo's explanation, I found my gaze drawn to him.

(You haven't said anything yet. Maybe Giles didn't tell you about it?)

Leo:Jily, were you listening to what I just said?

(Ahh! Oops!)

Jily:I'm sorry! I was just spacing out.
I felt my cheeks flush, but Leo only smiled in response.
Leo:Well, if you can't focus on your studies, maybe I should ask you now.
Jily:Ask me what?
I looked up at Leo, and he grinned at me.
Leo:Is it okay if I visit your room tonight, Jily?

=======

Leo:Is it okay if I visit your room tonight, Jily?
Jily:Leo—

(My room?)

It was the last thing I'd expected him to ask, and I blushed at the knowing look in his eyes.
His grin widened at my reaction, and when he spoke again, his tone was teasing.
Leo:After all, I have to give you my reply, don't I?

(Wait a minute—)

His knowing grin immediately reminded me of the:married life Giles had mentioned.

(You definitely heard all about it from Giles, didn't you?)

Jily:Yes, you do.
I nodded firmly, my heart suddenly pounding with anticipation, and Leo smirked with satisfaction.
Leo:Then it's decided.
He turned his gaze back to the book in front of him and went on with his lesson as if nothing had happened.
But every so often he gave me a suggestive look that kept my heart pounding for the rest of the lesson.

***

It was late evening, and the stars were bright in the sky overhead.
I was alone in my room, waiting for Leo to visit me.

(I'm starting to feel nervous.)

Leo:Is it okay if I visit your room tonight, Jily?
Leo:After all, I have to give you my reply, don't I?

(Gah, when are you going to turn up already?!)

I glanced up at the clock again, unable to relax.
At that moment there was a knock at the door.
???:Can I come in?

=======

At that moment there was a knock at the door, and the voice I'd been waiting for said,
???:Can I come in?
Jily:Yes!
My tummy was all aflutter with nerves as the door slowly opened.
Leo stepped into the room, and then stopped and stared at me.
For a moment his eyes were wide with surprise, and I blinked back at him.
Then he burst out laughing.
Jily:Leo?
Leo:I'm sorry! You were just making the cutest face.
Leo:Are you nervous?
His tone was gently teasing, but I couldn't help blushing all the same.
Jily:Well—
I pouted a little, dropping my gaze, but then he spoke again, his voice softer.
Leo:But thanks to you, I feel a little more relaxed.
Leo:I think I was more nervous than you were.
Jily:You were?
I looked up in surprise to find him smiling gently at me, his hand held out.
Leo:Can you show me the rings Giles gave you?
Jily:Oh—okay.
I pulled out the small box Giles had given me and passed it to Leo.
Leo took the box, and knelt down on one knee in front of me, his expression turning serious.
Leo:I know it's only for three days, but I wanted to do this properly.
Leo:Jily, will you marry me?

(Oh, Leo—)

My heart was suddenly pounding hard enough to hurt, and I felt almost overwhelmed with happiness.
Leo:Jily?
I was lost for words, but then I realized Leo was looking up at me with a worried gaze.
I smiled down at him, letting all the joy I felt inside come out in my voice.
Jily:I'd be delighted.
Leo's expression relaxed into a sweet, gentle smile.
Leo:So this is what it's like to propose, huh?
Leo:I don't think my heart can take it more than once. Here.
Leo reached out and took my left hand, sliding the ring gently onto my ring finger.
Then he slid the other ring onto the ring finger of his own left hand, and stood up again.

(Gosh, they're so beautiful.)

I stared down at the matching rings with a smile on my face.
Then I realized that Leo was staring directly at me.
Jily:What's wrong?
Leo:It makes me all excited, seeing you wearing that ring.
Leo:Like you're a married woman.

(Leo—)

His grin was roguish, and I stuck my tongue out at him.
Jily:C'mon, Leo—
Leo:Well, you really are a married woman now, aren't you?
Leo:My beautiful wife.
The last words were a sweet murmur as he pressed his lips against mine in a kiss.

(I'm already so happy just being with you, Leo.)
(I wonder what will be different about it, now that I'm your wife?)

His kisses were gentle and sweet, and I closed my eyes as I wrapped my arms around him.
I was filled with excitement about what the next few days would bring.
The next day was the start of our married life together.

=======

It had been decided that we would spend the three days living in the house I'd lived in before I became princess.
We packed our bags and headed there without delay.

(That looks about right, doesn't it?)

I was making breakfast while Leo finished unpacking our things.
Leo:Jily?

(Oh!)

Before I could turn and look, Leo wrapped his arms around me from behind, his body warm as it pressed up against mine.
Leo:Are you making omelettes?
Jily:Yes.
Leo:I'm glad that I'll finally get to try your omelette!
Leo:I like mine with extra ham.
I smiled to myself at his hopeful tone of voice, glancing back at him.
Jily:Okay, I'll put extra ham in it.
Leo:Thanks!
Leo:Oh, Jily—careful—
Leo reached out and caught hold of my sleeve, stopping it from falling in the pan.
Leo:That could've been messy.
I could hear the smile in his voice as he began to roll my sleeve up.
His fingers brushed against my wrist and then my bare arm as he rolled my sleeve up to my elbow.

(Leo—you're so close I can't concentrate on my cooking!)

I could feel his body pressed up against my back, and his fingers on my arm, and my heart was pounding.
Before I could think of what to say, he let go of my sleeve and kissed me on the cheek.
Leo:There you go, that should be safer.
I turned to look at him, and found him smiling gently at me.
Jily:Thank you.
His smile was so sweet that it brought a smile to my face as well.
I turned back to my cooking, but Leo wrapped his arms around me from behind.
Leo:Aww, heck.

=======

Leo:Aww, heck.
Jily:What?
I glanced back at him and realized that he was blushing slightly.
Leo:Living with you like this—it's like a dream.
Leo:I'm so happy right now.
Leo buried his face in my shoulder, hiding it from view.

(Oh, Leo—)

Leo's breath was warm against my skin, and joy filled me up inside.
Jily:I'm really happy too.
I reached up and gently stroked his hair as I spoke.
He sighed and lifted his head again, meeting my gaze.
Leo:Ahh, you always know how to get me.
Leo:That smile just made me even happier.
Leo turned me a little in his arms, pressing a gentle kiss against my lips.
I gasped softly into his mouth, closing my eyes and reaching up to wrap my arms around him.
Our lips parted for a moment, and then came together again in another sweet kiss.

***

Later that evening, as the stars shone in the sky above—
Leo:Okay! Your turn!
Jily:Um—

(Ahh, I'm feeling shy all of a sudden!)

Leo reached out towards my dress, but I caught his hands halfway there.
Jily:Hang on, Leo.
Leo:What's wrong? I'm already naked.
Jily:I know, but—we're married now, and—
I couldn't explain why I suddenly felt so shy, and Leo smiled sweetly at me.
Leo:Well, we're about to have a bath.
Leo:You can't go in the bath fully dressed, can you?

里2

Leo, Chapter 2:

Leo:Well, we're about to have a bath.
Leo:You can't go in the bath fully dressed, can you?
Leo smiled at me, his fingers toying with the hem of my dress.

(I know that, but—)

I hesitated, and then reached down and caught hold of his hand, pushing it gently away.
Jily:I know, but I can get changed by myself.
Leo:Okay then.
Leo:If you say so.
Leo smiled brightly at me, and then turned his back.

(Phew!)

I sighed with relief and then reached up and began to unbutton my dress.
But a moment later, Leo glanced back at me again.
Leo:I changed my mind!
Jily:Leo!
Leo's smile was mischievous as he wrapped his arms around me and lifted me into the air.
Jily:What are you doing?
Leo:Just having some fun.

=======

Leo:Just having some fun.
Leo set me down on the bed and leaned over me, and I couldn't help but smile up at the amusement in his eyes.
Leo:Before we have our bath—I think I'd like to have a taste of you.
He grinned down at me, and I laughed softly and leaned back against the bed.
Jily:Geez, Leo.
Leo leaned closer and captured my words with a kiss.
I smiled as I returned his kiss, reaching up to wrap my arms around him.

***

The next morning, as the birds chirped outside—
Leo and I were sitting at the table, sharing a relaxing breakfast together.
Leo poured more syrup on his pancakes, and ate another mouthful.
Leo:This is so good.
He was so clearly enjoying his food, and I smiled as I watched him eat.

(We really are like a newly married couple, aren't we?)

At that moment there was a knock at the door.

(I wonder who that could be? It's awfully early.)

I started to stand up from my chair, but Leo was already on his feet.
Leo:Don't worry, I'll get it.
Leo crossed to the door and opened it.
Leo:Oh. I forgot.

(I wonder what's going on?)

I could faintly hear Leo talking to someone, and I watched curiously from where I sat.
A short while later, Leo came back, leading a small boy by the hand.
Jily:Who's this?
Leo:Apparently the orphanage is really under-staffed today.
Leo:Giles asked if we'd take care of him for the day.

(Gosh, that sounds rough for the orphanage!)

The boy was hugging a book tightly to his chest, staring up at me with wide eyes through his glasses.
Jily:Good morning. What's your name?
Boy:It's Henri.
Henri pushed his glasses up on his nose as he spoke.

(What a self-assured young kid!)

Jily:My name is Jily. Let's have fun together today, okay?
Henri:Okay!

(Hmm?)

Henri's cheeks seemed slightly flushed, and I wondered what was wrong.
But before I could say anything, Leo spoke to him.
Leo:So were they right in telling me you have some homework to do for school?
Henri nodded as he looked up at Leo, and Leo grinned at him.
Leo:I can help you with that if you like.
Jily:Well then, why don't I go and buy some snacks for you while you do that?
Jily:Good luck, Henri!
Henri nodded firmly as he turned to look at me, and I smiled down at him.
I watched the two of them for a moment before turning to get ready to go out.
After Jily left, Henri and Leo sat down and began to study together.
Leo:Yes, that's right.
Leo:You're really smart, Henri.
Leo looked up from the parchment he was checking, and reached out to ruffle Henri's hair.
Henri gave him a sour look, and muttered under his breath.
Henri:If possible I would've preferred to have Jily help me.
Leo:What?

=======

Henri:If possible I would've preferred to have Jily help me.
Leo:What?
Leo blinked at Henri's words, and then gave him a wry smile.
Leo:Are you trying to tell me that you like Jily?
Henri:Oh!
Henri blushed at Leo's words, but then he met Leo's gaze, his expression challenging.
Henri:I didn't say 'like.' But I think she's cute.
Leo:Oh-ho.
Leo:In that case, that makes us rivals.
Henri:Rivals?
Leo:Yep. Sorry, but I happen to like Jily very much too.
Henri lifted his chin, not looking put off in the slightest.
Henri:I'm better at studying, so I'm definitely better for her.
Leo's smile deepened as he looked at Henri's proud expression.
Leo:Shall we have a showdown, then?
Leo:To see which of us is better for Jily?

***

It didn't take me long to buy some cakes and return to the house.

(I wonder how their studying is going?)

Jily:I'm home!
I called out cheerfully as I stepped into the room.
Leo:Jily, welcome home!
Henri:Welcome home, Jily.

(What the—)

For some reason both of them were standing just inside the doorway, waiting for me.
Jily:What's the matter, you two?
My eyes widened in surprise as I stared at them, and they exchanged a glance.
Henri:We have a request to make of you.

=======

Leo:Henri and I decided to have a showdown.
Jily:A... showdown?
Henri nodded firmly, and pushed his glasses up on his nose again.
Leo:Our request is that whoever wins the showdown,
Leo:gets to go on a date with you for a whole day.
Jily:Wait, what?!
My mind went blank at Leo's words, and I stared at him in confusion.
Henri:Tomorrow Leo and I will both take one of the school tests.
Henri:Please, will you go on a date with whoever gets the highest score?
Leo:What do you think, Jily?
I felt almost overwhelmed by their earnest requests, and without thinking I nodded.
Jily:Well, I suppose that's okay.

(But what on earth happened while I was gone?)

Curiosity burned me up inside, but I couldn't quite bring myself to ask.

***

That evening, Leo took Henri and I out to look at the stars.
Leo:Come here, Henri.
Leo beckoned to Henri from where he stood by the telescope, and Henri hurried towards him.
Leo:That's Orion.
Leo:See, it looks just like it did in the textbook. And over there is Gemini.
Henri:Wow! You're right!
Henri's eyes sparkled with excitement as he listened to Leo's explanation.

(Watching you two now, I almost feel like I imagined that whole showdown thing.)
(You seem just like a happy father and son.)

I smiled as I watched them, and then Leo looked up and caught my gaze.
Leo:Jily, you too.
Jily:Okay.
Leo smiled sweetly as he offered me his hand, and I reached out to take it.
But before I could, Henri stepped in between us, pushing Leo's hand away.
Henri:No! Not allowed unless you win!
Henri scowled up at Leo, and Leo gave him a rueful smile.
Leo:Ahh, heck. That wasn't what I meant, but—
Leo:Fine. I won't touch Jily again until after I win.
Leo's voice was clearly teasing, and then he turned to look at the stars again.
But there was something sad and a little lonely in his expression.

(Leo?)

=======

The three of us returned from our stargazing and climbed into bed together.

(Henri seems so grown-up the rest of the time, but... he looks so young right now.)

I looked down at Henri, who was sound asleep between Leo and I.
Then I looked up at Leo, who was propped up on one elbow, watching us both.
Jily:Leo, are you really going to have a showdown tomorrow?
Leo:Yep. It's a boy thing.
Leo smiled ruefully as he spoke, and then his smile turned into a grin.
Leo:Hey, come a little closer.
Jily:Yes?
I raised one eyebrow as I leaned towards him.
A moment later his lips captured mine in a soft kiss.
I closed my eyes as our mouths moved together, and a soft gasp escaped me as our lips parted.
Leo leaned back from me, and pressed a finger against my lips.
Leo:If you make too much noise, you'll wake Henri.
Leo:Goodnight, Jily.
Leo traced my lips gently with his fingers as he leaned over and kissed my cheek.

(I only made a noise because you kissed me out of the blue!)

I shook my head ruefully as he lay back against the bed, and then I lay down as well.

(I wonder what's going to happen tomorrow?)

I could still feel the lingering warmth of his lips on mine, and I felt a flutter of anticipation in my tummy.
I closed my eyes and tried not to think about the next day as I fell asleep.

里3

Leo, Chapter 3:

The next day, Leo and Henri sat side by side at the desk.

(They really are going to have a showdown.)

I watched nervously as Leo looked over at Henri.
Leo:Are you sure about this, Henri?
Leo:I'm pretty smart, you know.
Henri:What's that supposed to mean?
Leo:I'm just saying, if you want to quit, now's the time.
Leo smirked at Henri, who frowned a little and said,
Henri:As if I'd quit now! I'll be the one going on the date with Jily.
Henri:Jily, please say the word.
Jily:Well, okay then.
Jily:One, two, three, GO!
They both turned over their question sheets and began to write.
I watched Henri for a moment, and then I surreptitiously turned my gaze to Leo.
His expression was unusually serious as he focused on completing the questions.

***

Some time later—
Jily:Time's up. Both of you, please stop writing.
A s soon as I spoke, Leo put down his quill and leaned back in his seat, stretching his arms above his head.
Leo:Ahh, it's been a while since I gave it my all.
Leo:Jily, could you grade the tests for us?
Jily:Sure.
I took both their answer sheets, and began to check over their results.

(Oh, wow!)

I caught my breath as I finished marking their tests.
Jily:And the results are...

=======

Jily:And the results are...
Jily:You both got 100s!
Leo and Henri both stared at me with wide, disbelieving eyes.
Leo:Well, I didn't expect that.
Henri:But that's—
Henri:Does that mean neither of us gets to go on a date with you?
Henri looked so disappointed, and my heart ached to see it.

(We can work with this, right?)

I looked back and forth between Henri and Leo as I made a suggestion.
Jily:Henri, Leo.
Jily:If you're both okay with it, why don't we go out together, the three of us?

***

The three of us headed out to the town plaza, but Henri still looked glum and dispirited.
Leo:That place over there is selling crepes.
Jily:Ooh, they are. Henri, do you want one?
I looked down at Henri, but he shook his head quickly.
Henri:Instead of a crepe, I want to hold your hand.

(What?)

My eyes widened in surprise at Henri's mumbled words, and then I saw Leo smirking.
Leo:I wouldn't mind holding your hand too.

(You too, Leo?)

I frowned at him in confusion, and then sighed and gave them both a small smile.
I reached out and took Leo's big hand in one hand, and Henri's little hand in the other.
Jily:Why don't we all hold hands, then?
I smiled at Henri as I spoke and then glanced casually at Leo.
Leo was looking unusually pleased with himself, and I blinked at him.
He met my gaze for a moment, and his smile widened slightly.

(Leo, don't tell me—)

=======

He met my gaze for a moment, and his smile widened slightly.

(Leo, don't tell me—)

I had a sudden thought, but right then Henri pulled gently on my hand.
Henri:Jily, I know we both got 100s, but...
Henri:I'm pretty sure I finished the test faster. So...
Jily:What?
I stared down at Henri in surprise, and Leo laughed softly.
Leo:Is that really how you wanna play it, Henri?
Leo:If you want girls to like you, you need to be more straightforward.
Leo:For example, like this.
As Leo, spoke he lifted my hand up.
He moved it towards his lips and placed a soft kiss on the back of my hand.
Henri:Huh?! What's so straightforward about that?
Leo:If you're jealous, you could try doing the same.
Henri:No, I won't!

(Geez, you two!)

I couldn't help but giggle softly as I listened to them go back and forth.
In the end, our three-person date was surprisingly relaxed and fun.

***

When the time came, Leo and I took Henri back to the orphanage.
Henri:Jily, will you go on a date just with me next time?
Jily:Um—

(I'm not sure I should just say yes to that, but—)

I chewed my lip hesitantly, and then Leo spoke before I could.
Leo:If you beat me, then maybe she will.
Leo:But next time I'll make sure it doesn't end at a draw.
Leo grinned down at Henri, and the boy suddenly cleared his throat awkwardly.
Henri:Leo, can I tell you something?
Leo:Hmm?

(Now what?)

Leo crouched down on the ground so that he was at eye level with Henri.
Henri leaned close and whispered in Leo's ear, too quietly for Jily to hear.
Henri:Leo, you may look calm, but you're not calm at all, are you?
Henri:I can't believe you let yourself get jealous over a kid like me.
A rueful smile spread across Leo's face.
He studied Henri's expression for a moment, his eyes amused.

(What are they talking about?)

I watched quietly as Henri stopped whispering and pulled away from Leo.
Henri:Anyway, see you later.
Henri's smile looked triumphant somehow as he turned away from us.
He waved over his shoulder as he headed into the orphanage.

=======

As we walked back from the orphanage, my curiosity got the better of me.
Jily:So, Leo?
Jily:What did Henri say to you right at the end?
Leo:It's a secret.
Leo smiled as he spoke, reaching out to take hold of my hand and twine our fingers together.

(Oh—)

It felt entirely different to how it had felt earlier in the day, when it had been the three of us.
My pulse began to speed up, and at the same time Leo whispered,
Leo:At last it's just the two of us.
Leo:It's the last night of our married life. Why don't we go out somewhere?

***

The place Leo took me to was a refined bar located in the basement of a building.
Leo:I might challenge myself a little by ordering alcohol.
Leo was looking over the menu as he spoke, and I stared at him in surprise.

(It's really rare for you to actually want to drink, Leo.)

Jily:Will you be okay?
Leo:Sure. I'll be fine so long as I only have a little.
Leo:And today's a special day, after all.
Leo raised his hand, and a waiter came over and took our order.
Before long, the waiter brought over our champagne in two beautiful glasses.
Leo:Well then. Here's to my wonderful wife.
I blushed at Leo's words, and lifted my glass towards his.
Jily:To my wonderful husband.
Leo:Thank you, Jily.
Leo:Cheers!
Our glasses clinked together, and then Leo swallowed his drink in one gulp.

=======

Leo:Cheers!
Our glasses clinked together, and then Leo swallowed his drink in one gulp.

(What happened to you only having a little?!)

I lifted my glass to my lips and took a sip as I watched Leo cautiously.

***

Leo and I enjoyed several drinks together, and then we left the bar.
We began to make our way up the stairs leading back to the street.
Leo was walking ahead of me, but without warning he stopped.
I looked up at him, feeling a sudden thread of unease.

(I hope the alcohol didn't make you sick.)

Jily:Leo, are you okay?
I reached out to touch his arm, and when he looked back at me I realized his cheeks were flushed.
Leo:Sorry. I think I'm a bit drink.
Our eyes met, and I could see something oddly serious in his gaze.
Leo:Jily—

(Oh!)

Leo caught me gently by the wrists and pushed me up against the wall.
He leaned towards me, placing a hand on each side of my head, and my pulse began to race.
Jily:Leo?
I whispered his name softly, and his expression turned sad.
Leo:When it comes to you, I'm so weak.
Leo:Even Henri told me that even though I may look calm, I'm not calm at all.
I remembered then, what Leo had been like when we'd spent time together with Henri.

(So I was right.)

Leo:Fine. I won't touch Jily again until after I win.
Leo:I wouldn't mind holding your hand too.

(You were jealous of Henri the whole time, weren't you?)

I looked up at Leo again, smiling gently as I did so.
He met my gaze directly, his voice earnest as he said,
Leo:But it's because I love you so much that I get stupid about things.
Leo:It didn't seem to matter that the other guy was just a kid.
Leo:I couldn't help it—I still got jealous.

Leo, Chapter 4-Sweet Ending:

Leo:But it's because I love you so much that I get stupid about things.
Leo:It didn't seem to matter that the other guy was just a kid.
Leo:I couldn't help it—I still got jealous.
Leo slid his arms around my waist, pulling me towards him.
As our bodies pressed together, I could feel how warm he was, and I wondered if it was the alcohol.

(I had no idea you felt that way.)
(And yet—I'm glad that you felt able to tell me.)

I reached up and wrapped my arms around Leo in return.
But as I did so—

(What the—Leo?)

Leo's arms loosened slightly on me, and his body slowly sank down against mine, his weight heavy.
Jily:Leo?

(Are you kidding me? Did you just fall asleep?)

***

The next morning—
As we were waiting for the carriage from the palace to arrive, Leo said,
Leo:I'm so sorry, Jily.
Leo:I caused you so much trouble.
Leo had fallen asleep right there in the stairwell the night before.
But I'd had the bar arrange a carriage for us, and the driver had helped me get Leo back into the house.
Jily:No, it's fine. Don't worry about it.

(I don't mind, because I got to hear how you really feel.)

I smiled up at Leo, remembering his halting words from the night before.
As I looked at him, I noticed something.
Jily:Leo, hold still for a sec.
Jily:Your necklace is all tangled.
I reached up and carefully untangled his necklace for him.
Leo:There you go.
Leo:Jily, don't move.
Jily:Hmm?
I looked up in surprise at the serious tone of his voice.
A moment later his lips captured mine in a sudden kiss.
There was a sweet passion and vibrancy to his kisses, and I closed my eyes and leaned against him.
Jily:Leo—
Leo:Aww, heck. If I'd just woken up again last night, we could've done this all night long.
Leo:Why on earth did I fall asleep?
Leo sounded so aggrieved as he gazed mournfully down at me.

(Gosh, Leo, you're so cute sometimes.)

I giggled a little as I looked up at his regretful expression.
Just then I heard the sound of a carriage pulling up outside.
Jily:Oh! We should get going—
I turned towards our luggage as I spoke, but Leo reached out and took my hand, stopping me.
Leo:Just a little longer... before we have to go home.

=======

Leo:Just a little longer... before we have to go home.
Leo murmured as his lips captured mine again.
For a moment the kiss was all that mattered, and then Leo pulled back, caressing my lower lip with his thumb.
Leo:Okay, let's go.
Leo smiled brightly as he took me by the hand.

(Ahh, you always know how to get me, Leo.)

I smiled back at him, squeezing his hand as we headed out to board the carriage.

***

Once we returned to the palace, we made our way to the study.
Giles was there to greet us, and he gave a soft sigh as we walked in.
Giles:Well done, the two of you. Or at least, that's what I'd like to say, but—
Giles frowned a little as he turned his gaze on Leo.
Giles:What exactly do you think you're doing, returning to the palace with a hangover?
Leo:Sorry, we were just having so much fun.
Leo:Weren't we, Jily?
Jily:Well—
There was something all too knowing about Leo's gaze as he looked at me, and I blushed a little.
I heard Giles sigh, and I quickly turned to look at him again.
Giles:At any rate, I imagine you're both tired, so I've arranged for today to be a day off.
Giles:But Leo, please do something about that hangover. And also—
Giles paused, and then stared meaningfully at both of us.
Giles:As a punishment for you both—

=======

Giles:As a punishment for you both—
Giles:I forbid you to see each other for the rest of the day.
My eyes widened in shock at Giles's words, but Leo outright grimaced at him.
Leo:C'mon, Giles, isn't that a bit too strict?
Giles:If I don't, you'll just try to spend the whole day with the princess, won't you?
Giles:And then you won't rest enough, and it will likely affect your work.

(But Giles! That's too much!)

I continued to stare at Giles in disbelief, but he seemed quite determined.
Leo and I had no choice but to go along with his decision.

***

Since I wasn't able to spend time with Leo, I went to the library and tried to read.

(I can't believe we're not allowed to see each other at all today.)

Loneliness welled up inside me, and I found myself unable to focus on the words on the page.
I turned the page listlessly, remembering how much fun my married life with Leo had been.
Leo:Careful—that could've been messy.
Leo:That smile just made me even happier.
Leo:I like mine with extra ham.

(Everything was so much fun, even the little stuff.)

Jily:Oh, Leo—
Something about saying his name aloud helped ease my loneliness, and I smiled a little as I shut my eyes.
I closed the book and curled up into the chair, letting myself fall into a light doze.
At that same moment Leo was in his room, sneaking a peek into the corridor outside.
Leo:I can't believe you'd post a guard at my door, Giles. Guess you're really serious about this.
Leo:Now let's see, what to do...
Leo gave a chagrined smile as he glanced around the room, until his gaze was caught by the birdcage.
He opened the cage door, and tied a small letter to Sebastian's leg.
Leo:Sebastian.
Leo:Can you take this to Jily? And make sure no one sees you?
Leo spoke the words carefully, and Sebastian's head bobbed up and down in response.
Sebastian:Got it, got it!
Sebastian flew out the open window, spreading his wings wide.

=======

I was dozing quietly in a chair in the library.
But the sound of something tapping at the window roused me from my sleep.
Jily:Nnnnn—
I looked around and saw Sebastian sitting on a branch just outside the window, a letter tied to his leg.
Sebastian:From Leo! From Leo!

(Is that a letter from Leo?)

I hurriedly opened the window and let Sebastian in, then took the letter from him.
I unrolled it and read the words written inside.
Leo:I'll wait in the gardens.

(Leo—)

Jily:Thank you, Sebastian!

(Does that mean you're in the gardens right now?)

I hurriedly put my book back on the shelf and headed towards the door.

***

My skirts swished around my legs as I hurried outside, but Leo was nowhere to be seen.

(But this is where you meant when you said:the gardens, right?)

I looked around uneasily, and started to walk forward again, when a hand reached out and caught mine.
Jily:Oh!
I was pulled into the shadow of a nearby archway, and I looked up in surprise.
Leo was standing there, amusement sparkling in his eyes.
Leo:Don't speak too loudly.
Leo:Someone could come by at any moment.

=======

Leo:Don't speak too loudly.
Leo:Someone could come by at any moment.

(Oh, Leo!)

My heart was pounding with surprise, but I tried my best to keep my voice low.
Jily:How did you get out here?
Jily:Giles said he was going to put a guard at your door.
Leo:That's a secret.
Leo's smile deepened with amusement as he spoke, and then he reached up and touched my cheek.
Leo:I wanted to see you, Jily.
My heart had just started to recover from the surprise of seeing him, but it sped up again at his sweet words.

(So did I.)

I reached up and placed my hand over Leo's where it rested on my cheek.
Jily:I wanted to see you too.
Leo:Jily—
Leo paused, and then leaned closer and pressed his lips against mine.
His kiss was gentle and sweet, and I closed my eyes.
A soft sigh escaped me as our lips parted again, and Leo laughed.
Leo:It was the last night of our married life, but we didn't even get to kiss, did we?
Leo:Let me make it up to you now.

(Right now?)

My face flushed with happiness, and Leo kissed my cheek.
Leo:You're blushing.
Leo:You're so adorable. I want to keep you all to myself.
Leo:Even Henri can't have you.
Leo's voice held an edge of amusement as he wrapped his arms around me, holding me tight.
Leo:I know it's childish of me, but I really was jealous.
I smiled and leaned against his warm chest, listening to the pounding of his heart.
Leo:I'll try better in the future, I promise. But—
Leo:I lose my cool sometimes when it comes to you.
Leo:Will you still love me, even so?
I lifted my gaze and realized that Leo was blushing.
There was something so sweet and earnest about him in that moment, and I smiled as I hugged him back.
Jily:Of course I will.
Jily:I love you just the way you are, Leo.
I spoke the words softly, and Leo caught his breath.
Leo:Ahh, you got me again.
Leo:There's not even anyone here to be jealous of, but I'm still losing my cool.
Leo leaned closer and kissed me again, his lips more passionate and feverish than before.
We hid there in the shadows of the arch as we gave ourselves over to the passion of our kisses...

Leo, Chapter 4-Premium Ending:

Leo:But it's because I love you so much that I get stupid about things.
Leo:It didn't seem to matter that the other guy was just a kid.
Leo:I couldn't help it—I still got jealous.
Leo wrapped his arms around my waist, his embrace strong and warm.
I buried my face in his chest, and he reached up and began to stroke my hair.
Jily:Leo—
Leo:All this time, I've just wanted to hold you and touch you like this.
Leo:Can I have you all to myself tonight?
His whispered words were filled with promise, and my heart began to pound.

(Do you even have to ask?)

I lifted my head and smiled happily up at him.
Jily:Of course.
I nodded firmly, and Leo tightened his grip on me.

***

We returned to the house, and Leo shut the door behind us.
Leo:Jily—
His voice was hoarse as he pulled me into his arms and kissed me.
Jily His kisses were sweet and gentle at first, and I sighed softly into his mouth.
But they soon became deeper and more passionate, tinged with the lingering taste of champagne.
Jily:Leo—
I gasped his name between kisses, and he kissed me again before whispering against my lips,
Leo:You really got me tonight.
Leo:I want you so badly right now.

=======

Leo's kisses were more passionate and bold than usual, and I could feel my desire rising to meet his.
Jily:Leo—
I clung to him, giving myself over to the kisses, until at last our lips parted again.
Leo:Ahh, it's true. I totally lose my cool when it comes to you.
Leo's eyes were wavering with emotion as he stared down at me.
Leo:I never wanted you to see me looking so uncool.
Leo:But I want you so badly right now, I'm losing my head.

(Oh, Leo—)

He was so honest and sweet in that moment, and it warmed me deep inside.
Jily:You never look uncool to me, Leo.
Leo:What?
Jily:I'm happy when you tell me how you really feel.
Jily:It helps me realize how much you love me.
Leo's eyes wavered again at my words.
Leo:I really do love you, Jily.
He leaned close to kiss me again, his lips hot and feverish against mine.
As I kissed him back, I was flooded with memories of our married life.

〝Leo:So this is what it's like to propose, huh?〞

〝Leo:That smile just made me even happier.〞

〝Leo:I wouldn't mind holding your hand too.〞

(I really do love you too, Leo.)

We moved towards the bed, still kissing, as if we couldn't bear to stop even for a moment.
At last Leo pushed me gently down against the bed.
He knelt on the bed and leaned over me, and I looked up at him expectantly.
His eyes were sparkling in the dim light, but his expression was serious.

=======

I lay back against the bed covers, looking up at Leo.
His eyes were sparkling in the dim light, but his expression was serious as he gazed at me.
Without another word, he leaned over me, his lips moving towards my neck.
Jily:Ohhhh—
His lips and teeth nibbled and grazed against my skin, and I reached up and twined my fingers in his hair.
Jily:Thanks to these three days—
Jily:I feel like I understand better how you feel about me.
Leo:Good.
Leo sat back a little, and reached for the buttons on his shirt.

(And I feel like I need to say this to you now.)

Jily:I love you, Leo.

(With all my heart.)

Leo's shirt hit the floor, and he gave me a sweet smile.
Leo:I love you, too.
Leo:I've said it so many times, and yet—
Leo leaned over me again, our faces so close they were almost touching.
Leo:It's never enough somehow.
Leo:Let's get married one day, for sure.
His whisper was a sweet murmur against my lips as he kissed me.

=======

Leo:Let's get married one day, for sure.
His whisper was a sweet murmur against my lips as he kissed me.
His body was warm as it pressed down against mine, and I reached up and wrapped my arms around him.
I smiled at the idea that we were creating yet another happy memory, and I gave myself over to his kisses.

***

The next morning brought bright sunshine and clear skies.
We had some time before we had to return to the palace, so we visited the lake again.
Jily:The lake looks so beautiful with the sun shining off it.
Leo:Yeah. And that breeze is great.
It was a beautiful morning, and we reached out to take each other's hands.
Jily:I guess our married life ends today, doesn't it?
Leo:Yeah.
Leo:Should we take off our rings?

(Oh. I suppose that's the right thing to do.)

Jily:I guess so.
I felt a sudden ache in my chest as I looked down at the ring on my finger.
Leo took my left hand in his, and gently slid the ring off.

(This really is the end, then.)

My finger looked naked without the ring on it, and sadness welled up inside.
Leo:Does it make you feel sad?
Jily:Yes. What about you?
Leo:Well, yes.
Leo:I do feel sad, but I also feel like I have a new goal.
Jily:A new goal?
I spoke curiously, and Leo's expression relaxed into a gentle smile.
But in spite of his sweet smile, there was determination in his eyes as he looked at me.

=======

Jily:A new goal?
I spoke curiously, and Leo's expression relaxed into a gentle smile.
But in spite of his sweet smile, there was determination in his eyes as he looked at me.
Leo:I'm absolutely going to make you my wife one day.
Leo:That's what I've decided.
Leo's words filled my heart with a sudden burst of sweet happiness.
He took hold of my left hand again, but the sadness I'd felt at the loss of the ring was gone.
Jily:Thank you.
Jily:I was so happy during our married life—

(So happy I kept wishing that time would stop so we could stay that way forever.)

I couldn't quite bring myself to say the last part aloud, so I squeezed Leo's hand instead.
Jily:I'd love to be your wife.
Leo:Good.
Leo nodded firmly, and there was no hesitancy in his gaze as he looked at me.
Leo:I'm gonna do my best to make you fall in love with me even more, so you always feel that way.
Leo:I hope you're prepared for that.
His words were a soft, serious whisper as he leaned towards me.
As his lips moved towards mine, I closed my eyes.

(I know we have to go back to the palace today.)
(But right now I just want to give myself over to the happiness I'm feeling.)

Leo's lips stopped just shy of mine, his breath warm as he whispered,
Leo:I love you more than anyone in the world.

(Oh, Leo—)

Before I could say anything, his lips captured mine in a warm, vivid kiss.
The warm sunlight reflecting off the lake seemed to envelop us as we came together in a tight embrace...
