It was early afternoon on a warm, mellow day.
I was sitting in a field of flowers with the children, telling them a fairy tale.
Child:Please, miss, tell us the rest!
Their eyes were sparkling as they gazed up at me, and I smiled down at the them.
Jily:The princess met all sorts of wonderful men.

I took a deep breath, and then began to tell the children a story of love.

There was a lake where it was said that a goddess would appear.
I was visiting Robert, who lived near the lake, and gathering firewood with him.
But somehow I'd ended up too close to the lake, and I'd dropped my precious brooch in the water.
Jily:No!
I watched in horror as my brooch sank slowly towards the bottom of the lake.
I leaned over, trying my best to reach into the water and grab hold of it before it was beyond my reach.
Robert:Jily!
Suddenly, Robert wrapped his arms around me from behind, pulling me back.
Robert:Careful, or you'll fall in!
Jily:I'm sorry, I just—
(I can't lose that brooch!)
It had been a gift from Robert, many years earlier, and it was precious to me.
(But how can I get it back?)
Sorrow welled up inside me, and I tried to blink back tears.
Suddenly a bright light poured out of the lake, making me squint.
Jily:What on earth—
Robert:Look at that!
I followed Robert's gaze, but I could barely believe my eyes.
A beautiful woman with sparkling gold hair was rising up from the waters of the lake.
(I don't believe it!)
Jily:Are you... the goddess?
I stared up at her, and she smiled gently at me, her whole expression filled with kindness.
Woman:Is this the brooch you dropped? This gold one, set with diamonds?
Woman:Or is this the brooch you dropped? This old, tarnished silver one?
The woman held out both her hands, a brooch sitting on each palm.
(What am I supposed to say? What if it's a trick?)
I stared at the brooches, my heart racing with fear and confusion.
I felt a warm hand wrap around mine, and I sighed softly.
(Thanks, Robert. I needed that.)
Robert:All you have to do is choose the right one, Jily.
I glanced up at Robert, feeling warmed by his gentle words.
I took a deep breath, and then pointed to the silver brooch.
Jily:That's the brooch I dropped.
The woman smiled at me as she handed me the brooch.
(Thank goodness!)
I hugged the brooch to my chest, filled with relief.
Woman:You are good and honest, and so I will tell you one more thing.
Jily:Oh?
Woman:You will soon meet your true love—
The woman hesitated, glancing over at Robert, and then smiled at me again.
Woman:Or perhaps you have already met him.
(Wait a minute—)
I suddenly had so many things I wanted to ask her.
But before I could say anything, she vanished in a burst of bright light.
(When she said that, did she mean—)
The surface of the lake was still again, and I stared at it thoughtfully.
A moment later I felt Robert ruffle my hair gently.
Robert:I'm glad she gave it back.
Jily:So am I.
Robert:You've always treasured that brooch, haven't you? Thank you.
Robert's smile was gentle, and my heart skipped a beat.
(I think you were right, goddess.)
Robert:It looks like it's getting dark. Why don't we head back?
Robert squeezed my hand gently, and it was only then that I realized he was still holding it.
(Oh—)
Robert:I don't want you to lose anything else that's important to you.
Robert:Why don't we hold hands on the way back?
The warmth of his grip seemed to spread through my whole body.
Jily:Okay.
(Do you believe what the goddess said, Robert? Because I do.)
My heart was singing with happiness and hope for the future.
Robert and I walked back through the forest, never letting go of each other's hands...

『Beware of the wolf in the forest.』
I'd heard that said to me so many times.
But even so, I put on my red cape and hood and went into the forest.
I put down the lamp I was carrying, and pushed back my hood.
Jily:Nico?
I called the name softly as I looked around me.
???:I've been waiting for you.
Arms wrapped around me from behind, and a shiver ran through me.
(That voice—)
I wore a red riding hood, and it was dangerous for me in the forest.
Yet somewhere along the way, I'd fallen in love with a wolf.
Jily:I missed you too.
I turned my head and looked up at Nico with a smile.
Nico's return smile was so bright and carefree he looked nothing like a wolf.
Nico:Are you sure you wanna say that to me?
His eyes were sparkling with mischief, and I couldn't help but laugh.
Nico caught my hand and pulled me towards him, leaning against a nearby tree.
Nico:But haven't you been told you shouldn't come here?
Jily:I was told to beware, because wolves are dangerous.
Jily:But I've changed my mind since I met you.
Nico:Oh, really?
Jily:I mean—you're so kind.
Nico:I see. But, you know...
Nico slid an arm around my waist, pulling me closer.
Jily:Nico?
Our faces were suddenly much closer, and I stared at him, my heart thrumming with anticipation.
Nico:I really am a wolf, you know.
Nico:And I'm always, always craving you, Jily.
His eyes seemed to glow silver in the moonlight, and I found myself unable to look away.
Nico held my gaze as he reached out, brushing my hair away from my neck.
He stroked my bare skin for a long moment, his touch barely there, making me crave more.
A smile toyed at his lips as he leaned towards me, and I tilted my head back.
A moment later his lips touched my neck, his teeth grazing against my skin, and I gasped with pleasure.
Nico:I love you, Jily.
Nico:So much so I could eat you up.
Jily:Then do it—
My words ended in another gasp as his lips moved lower.
(You're ferocious, and yet ever so sweet—)
Nico lowered his lips to my breasts, and I moaned softly, reaching up to twine my fingers in his hair.
(You're my darling wolf, and you're all mine.)
I clung tightly to him under the silver moonlight, losing myself in his heady passion...

『Mirror, mirror, on the wall, who is the fairest of them all?』
『Why, it is the princess known as Snow White—your stepdaughter, Jily.』
My stepmother was furious at those words, and she sent me into the forest to die.
But I was found by some friendly dwarves, and they let me live with them in secret.
***
One evening—
(What a wonderful person.)
I couldn't stop thinking about the man I'd met in the forest that day.
〝The man and I rode his horse together all the way to the house I lived in with the dwarves.〞
〝The man dismounted from his horse, and then helped me down to the ground.〞
〝Jily:Thank you for bringing me safely home.〞
〝???:Not at all. It was my idea, after all.〞
〝The man adjusted his glasses, his gaze skittering away from mine as he spoke.〞
〝Jily:May I ask your name?〞
〝Albert:My name is Albert. What's yours?〞
〝Jily:It's Jily.〞
〝Albert lifted his gaze again, his eyes meeting mine directly.〞
〝Albert:Jily—would it be all right if I came to see you again tomorrow?〞
〝His expression was so serious, and my heart skipped a beat.〞
〝(I'd like to see you again, too.)〞
〝Jily:Of course. Please come and visit me any time.〞
As I sat there reminiscing, I heard the sound of something clunking against the window.
I crossed the room, and to my surprise I saw a large red apple sitting on the windowsill.
(Where on earth did that come from?)
I picked it up in confusion, staring at it.
(That's weird. It looks like a normal apple, but—)
It seemed strangely appealing, and without thinking I lifted it to my mouth and took a bite.
Jily:Guh—
(What the heck—)
All my strength seemed to leave me, and I sank to the floor as everything faded to black.
***
The next day—
Albert paid a visit to the house where Jily lived.
But there he found the dwarves all standing around Jily, crying.
Albert:What on earth...
Dwarf 1:Jily ate a poisoned apple!
Albert hurried over to where Jily lay and took her hand, catching his breath at how cold she felt.
Dwarf 2:They say she'll never wake again unless her true love kisses her.
Albert scowled, determination crossing his face.
Albert:Jily, please, wake up.
Albert leaned slowly forwards, his face moving towards Jily's.
***
(Wait... was that—)
A faint warmth touched my lips, and all of a sudden the world came spinning back to me.
I slowly opened my eyes, only to find Albert staring down at me, his expression relieved.
(What on earth happened?)
I sat up, looking around at the dwarves in confusion. They were all smiling, but their faces were streaked with tears.
Albert:Thank goodness.
Jily:Albert? What are you doing here?
Albert laughed softly, and I could hear the relief in it.
Albert:I promised you, didn't I? That I'd come for you today.
(Oh! You did remember your promise!)
Albert reached out, cupping my cheek gently with his hand, and my heart began to race.
Albert:When I spoke with you, I felt something I'd never felt before.
Albert:I know we only met yesterday, but—
Albert:I feel as though I've fallen for you.
His cheeks flushed red as he spoke, and I stared up at him.
My heart was filled with sudden happiness, and it all seemed to make sense.
(I don't know why, but I think—
(I think I've been waiting my whole life to meet you, Albert.)
Jily:I feel the same way.
I lifted my head as our lips came together in a soft kiss.
I reached up and wrapped my arms around him, knowing that the best was yet to come...

I lived in a beautiful, sparkling world under the ocean.
But I was a mermaid, and I fell in love with a human prince.
So I gave up my voice in return for the chance to become human.
The prince was supposed to have lost his memory.
But somehow, he found me all the same.
Leo frowned at me, reaching out hesitantly to touch my cheek.
Leo:Are you the one who saved me?
Prince Leo had been drowning in the sea, and I'd managed to save him.
I had no voice to tell him the truth, so instead I nodded.
Leo:What's your name? I can't seem to remember it.
Leo:I feel as if I might remember if you could just tell me something.
(I want to tell you everything! But I can't say a word.)
The waves slapped against the sides of the boat, the sound ominous somehow.
(But if you can't remember me, we can't stay together, can we?)
I knew that a mermaid who couldn't be with her true love would dissolve into sea foam and fade away.
Sudden tears overwhelmed me, trickling down my cheeks.
I turned my head away, but without warning—
Leo:Sorry—it has nothing to do with remembering, does it?
(What are you saying?)
Leo pulled me towards him, wrapping me in a warm embrace.
Leo:As soon as I saw your tears, it all made sense.
Leo:I feel like I don't ever want to make you cry—like you're more important to me than anyone.
Leo:I feel as if I've never stopped thinking about you.
As I leaned against his warm chest, I could feel the way his heart was racing.
(Even if you don't remember me—
(I'm still right here in your heart, aren't I?)
I buried my face in his chest, just like I'd always wanted to.
Leo:Look at me.
The words startled me, and I lifted my head in surprise to look up at him.
A moment later his lips found mine as he kissed me softly.
His lips were sweet and warm, and I sighed as our kiss ended all too soon.
Jily:My prince...
The words were like a whisper, but they were real.
(I can speak!)
I reached up and touched his cheek, filled with sudden excitement.
Jily:My prince!
Leo looked startled for a moment, but then he placed his hand over mine.
Leo:You don't have to call me that.
Leo:You're my princess now.
His expression relaxed into a gentle smile as he studied me.
Leo:Please, call me Leo.
Jily:Leo—
Leo:Yes?
(I've wanted to tell you this for so, so long.)
Jily:I've loved you since the moment we first met.
Leo stared down at me, his eyes trembling with emotion.
I felt unable to tear my eyes away as I waited breathlessly for his answer.
Leo:I love you too.
Leo:And I'll always love you.
His lips captured mine in another kiss, this one even sweeter than the last.
We kissed and kissed again, until I felt light-headed.
I leaned into his embrace, wanting to feel his warmth against me.
As I wrapped my arms around him, he pulled me closer, pressing our bodies together.
(I really do love you, with all my heart.)
Tears trickled down my cheeks again, but this time they were tears of joy...

It was early afternoon, and the sky was clear and bright.
I made my way to the tea party, just as I did every other day.
Giles placed his hat on the table as he began to prepare tea for us.
Jily:Isn't anyone else coming to the tea party today?
(The hare is usually here, at least.)
I looked around the table, but it was just the two of us.
Giles:Well, if it makes you that lonely—
Giles:Today, I will stay right here with you.
Giles gave me a bright smile as he handed me a teacup.
Giles:Here you go.
Jily:Thank you.
A sweet, fruity scent wafted up from the teacup.
I lifted it to my mouth, smiling as I took a sip.
Jily:It's delicious.
Giles:I'm glad to hear it.
Giles took a sip of his own tea, and then his expression changed.
Giles:Although it would seem we are out of dessert.
(Oh! You're right.)
I looked up, but there were no plates of food on the table at all.
Jily:I should have brought something with me.
I gave Giles a regretful smile as I looked over at him.
Without warning, he stood up from his chair and walked towards me.
Giles:Well, I suppose it can't be helped, then.
He reached out, tilting my chin towards him.
Giles:You shall be my dessert today.
Jily:Wait—what?
My heart skipped a beat, a sudden shiver of anticipation running through me.
Giles:Today's tea party is just for you and me.
Giles:There's nobody else here.
Giles leaned closer, pressing a warm kiss against my cheek.
Jily:But if someone else were to arrive late—
Giles:I didn't invite anyone else to begin with.
Jily:You—what?
Giles:Sometimes, I prefer us to have a more private tea party.
Giles trailed his fingers down to the front of my dress, deftly unlacing my ribbon ties.
Jily:Giles—
Sudden excitement thrilled through me, and I grinned up at him.
Giles:That said, although nobody else is coming—
Giles:You probably shouldn't make too much noise.
Giles:I'd hate for the animals in the forest to overhear us.
Without waiting for my answer, Giles leaned closer and kissed me.
His lips were warm and gentle, and he tasted faintly of tea.
He parted the front of my dress, his hands caressing my bare skin.
I moaned softly into his mouth, overwhelmed by my own sudden need and passion.
I found myself clutching the tablecloth under my hands as I responded eagerly to his kiss.
(Ahh, I'm no match for you, Giles—and I love it.)
I almost forgot to let go of the tablecloth as Giles pulled me into his arms.
But we barely even noticed as his hat tumbled to the ground...

Deep in the woods there stood a tall tower made of pale grey brick.
I had spent my entire life living inside the tower.
I'd never once had the chance to step outside and see the world.
But one day I met a man who told me his name was Sid.
He climbed all the way up my long hair just to find me in the tower.
And soon he took me by the hand, and led me down the stairs for the first time.
But halfway down, I stopped suddenly.
Jily:I—no, I can't go outside.
Sid:What?
Sid turned back to face me, and I gazed up at him, anxiety welling up inside.
Jily:I was told how terrifying it is out there.
I could feel my hand trembling, and I tried to pull it free from his grasp.
Sid:I'm gonna get you out of here.
Sid:C'mon.
(Waaaah!)
Sid lifted me into his arms without hesitation, and began to carry me down the stairs.
(I've never seen the world outside my tower.
(I'm scared!)
I wrapped my arms around Sid's neck, squeezing my eyes tightly shut.
Sid:We're here. Open your eyes.
I felt a fresh breeze on my cheek, and I hesitantly cracked one open, and then the other.
Jily:I don't believe it...
A beautiful field of yellow flowers spread out as far as the eye could see.
Tiny white butterflies fluttered and danced above them, and I could hear the sweet sound of birdsong.
(I never imagined the outside world could be so beautiful!)
Sid set me down gently, and I felt the soft touch of grass under my feet.
I couldn't stop smiling as I looked around, and then at last I realized Sid was staring at me.
Sid:That smile of yours—not bad at all.
Jily:What?
Sid:I'm gonna show you all sorts of things out here in the world.
Sid:I want you to keep smiling like that, okay?
He reached out and ruffled my hair gently, his hand warm against my head.
My heart skipped a beat at the simple touch, and I swallowed hard.
(I know we've only just met, but—)
I stared up at his handsome face, my heartbeat growing louder in my ears.
Jily:Can I say something weird?
Sid:Like what?
Jily:I want to stay with you forever, Sid.
Sid stared down at me, looking startled.
For a moment my words seemed to hang in the air like a challenge.
Then Sid began to laugh, his eyes bright with amusement.
Sid:I already figured you were the type to say weird stuff, but—
Sid:I'm starting to think I'm kinda weird myself.
His smile deepened as he reached out, lifting me into his arms again and cradling me against his chest.
Sid:I ain't gonna let you go again.
Sid:Spend your life with me, Princess.
Suddenly we were both grinning at each other, and that was all that seemed to matter.
Jily:Okay.
(Maybe we're both complete weirdos. But—)
I reached up and wrapped my arms around his neck, and his expression sobered.
(I think I love you, Sid.)
But before I could tell him that, his lips captured mine in a kiss.
(I've seen the world for the first time, and now I'm feeling this way for the first time, and—
(It's all thanks to you, Sid. I think I'll enjoy any place you take me, so long as you're there.)

『Thumbelina』
I was a tiny girl, born from a tulip, so that's what people called me,
and my parents had raised me lovingly.
However, my father had chosen a man for me to marry,
and the day was fast approaching.
I was terrified by the whole idea, and I couldn't stop the tears that fell.
But as I sat there crying, a human man found me.
(Oh no—I need to run away!)
But I was sitting atop a flower, and there was nowhere to hide.
I began to cry again, feeling confused and scared.
???:Please don't cry.
(What?)
I looked up in surprise to find the man gazing down at me,
his blue eyes wavering with emotion.
(I've always been told that humans are scary, but—)
His voice was gentle, and it eased the ache in my heart, just a little.
???:Did something happen?
His words were soothing, and before I knew it, I was telling him everything.
Jily:The truth is—
Jily:Tomorrow I have to marry a human man I've never met.
Jily:I don't even know his name.
Jily:I'm so scared, and... I just couldn't help crying.
The man's gaze was serious as he listened to my words.
???:We're so big that we must seem frightening to you.
Jily:Yes.
(And yet, right now—)
I didn't find him scary at all, and I gazed up at him in wonder.
(I'm not frightened of you.)
(This feeling is more like—)
I couldn't put it into words, but my heart felt like it was soaring.
(But why do I feel this way?)
As I stared up at the man, I heard the sound of a horse approaching.
???:I'm sorry—I have to go.
The man glanced in the direction of the sound,
and I felt a strange ache in my heart.
(I wish we could talk a little longer.)
Jily:Um—can I ask your name?
I called out as the man turned away, and he glanced back with a smile.
Louis:It's Louis. See you later, Jily.
(Wait a minute—how do you know my name?)
But Louis was gone from my sight before I could ask him anything.
***
The very next day was the day of my wedding.
The ceremony was being held in a field of flowers,
but I was stunned to see who was waiting for me there.
Jily:Louis?
It was the same man who'd spoken kindly to me only a day earlier.
The attendant who'd carried me there placed me in Louis's outstretched hand.
Louis:I'm sorry for startling you.
Louis:The truth is, I already knew who you were.
(So that's why you knew my name.)
I stared up at Louis in shock, and he looked away from me.
Louis:Ever since I first saw you, I've wanted to be with you.
Louis:But I don't want to make you sad.
Louis:So if you don't want to get married, just say so, okay?
His voice was soft and wistful, and my heart ached to hear it.
(But I'm not scared any more. Somehow, I feel like—)
Jily:I want to be with you, too.
I smiled slowly up at Louis, and his expression brightened at once.
Louis:Now we can be together forever.
Louis: Jily, will you be my wife?
Jily:I will.
Louis lifted me towards his face, and then frowned faintly.
Louis:I don't know how I should kiss you.
I blinked up at him, and then I began to giggle.
Jily:Close your eyes, Louis.
I reached up and placed a hand on his cheek, leaning in to kiss his soft lips.
(I never imagined today would be such a happy day.
(It's almost like a miracle, meeting someone like you, Louis.)
The flowers danced in the breeze,
and the watching crowd applauded and cheered for us...
